Anyone have experience with online dating websites?

Posted: Nov 14, 2013

I'm sort of, kind of, maybe, possibly considering signing up with an online dating website like Christian Mingle or Plenty of Fish.  Do any of you have experience with either of these?  Divorced 6 years (from 2nd husband), I'm finally feeling ready to share my heart again with a nice man.  Since I'm 50% the reason for both divorces, I know that I'm far from perfect...but I feel like I've learned to spot a man who will end being a verbal abuser.  I hope so.  I can't afford an expensive dating website, which limits me.

There are no single men at my church or at my day job (not transcription).  There certainly aren't any at my transcription job at home.  Ha!  Laughing

My church does have a few couples who met on Christian Mingle, and they're very happy.

I didn't make much sense in this sentence.  I meant to say "I know that I'm far from perfect...but I feel like I've learned to spot a man who will end UP being a verbal abuser" (meaning that I'll avoid him like the plague).

I met my husband on EHarmony and could not be happier. We spent around 6 months just chatting online and on the phone with no expectations. When we finally met we really knew each other and it has been awesome since that day. We dated for nearly 6 years (not on the computer, in real life) and now have been married for a year.

We are in our late 40s if that helps any and I have 3 kids from previous marriages. He had none from his previous marriages.

You can email me if you want to ask anything.

Good luck!

I had forgotten about E-Harmony. I think it might be more expensive than the other 2 I had in mind. Your story is very inspiring! I'll email you. Thank you. :)

After a 23-year marriage, I've been divorced for quite a while, too (64 years old now -- medical transcriptionist for the past 41). I thought Match.com was very good, but most recently I've discovered "OKCupid," which is very good also and is FREE!! I'm not real active in the dating world right now, but I do enjoy feeling like I'm at least staying in the game, and could jump in again if and when I wanted to.
Stick with ones that cost a lot - sm

Because that's the difference in some skanky man-ho cheating on his wife and somebody who's actually willing to put something into it. POF was bad news for me. I met a guy on there who I actually became friends with who was a man-ho and I wouldn't have touched him with a 10-foot pole for anything other than friendship if you get my drift because he was retired and spent hours every day trolling the different sites for women while HIS WIFE worked out of town. If they don't post their picture or give you a home phone or any other odd story, watch out. Also if they've never been married and older than 40, there's probably a reason. Just be careful.
E-Harmony - OP

I've been looking at some online reviews of dating websites, and it seems that E-Harmony, although expensive, might be the safest. Almost like the old saying "You get what you pay for." Some other sites had some pretty scary reviews. Plenty of Fish had very bad comments. Even Christian Mingle doesn't seem to be a real good choice, although as I said earlier, there are couples in my church who met on Christian Mingle. I will be very careful, no matter which site I sign up with.
some advice... - please read

Watch so.e of the tv shows on the topic, like catfishn and Dr.Phil had some show what to watch for.
- if they have some crisis and need you to send some money... run.
- if the only message you in the overnight hours... run.
- if they wont do a video chat... run.
- if the sentences seem put together somewhat backwards or the ling seems off... run.
- if they sweet talk the pants off you for two weeks and then they have a terrible accident... run.

Also... google search any photos to see if they really belong to someone else. Google search their name and check and double check everything they say. Meet in a very public place and have friends nearby. Be safe.

I agree, there's a lot to watch out for. I'm way too trusting, which usually results in my getting burned.

People who will pony up the cash for E-Harmony are serious about finding someone. Separates the wheat from the chaff real quick.

Best of luck to you! I know many people who've met and married via online dating. I also know two women who met their (excellent) husbands via a local matchmaker.

dont pay at eharmony lots of times they do women - mtr

I have friends and family members who have gone the online dating route, good and bad.

My friend signed up on one site for free, got a few matches, but then had to pay to see them.

My ex's cousin met a man online who was just the most wonderful thing since sliced bread. Had a huge fancy wedding. Got pregnant on her honeymoon. Then got a call one day FROM HIS WIFE in another state. Their marriage was "on hold" until his wife divorced him and then could be married to her (they are still together last I heard). He told her he was divorced with a child and was just so charming, but left out that little bit of important info of still being married.

BUT on a good note, my MIL met her husband online and they have been married for 10 years and he is just wonderful and great to her. So happiness can happen.

Just be careful and keep your guard up. If he sounds too good to be true, he probably is. I agree with the poster about Catfish the TV show too. I watch it every week and I've only seen one episode that the person actually was who he said he was. Good luck!

Okay, so I had a moment of whats out there so I filled out a profile on a dating site (the only way you can see anything on tha site is the fill out a profile), I didn't put a picture up but I did list likes/dislikes.  I did talk to a few men but no dates, meet ups or whatever.  Well, this morning the site e-mailed me that someone was looking at my profile.  To my shock it was my soon to be ex husband.  We live in a small town and it is obvious who it is.  I was&nbs ...

Meal Planners... Websites?Mar 15, 2010
Do any of you lovely fellow MTs of mine happen to use a meal planner online where you can chose recipes for the week and it will allow you to print a shopping list? My SIL gave me the idea of letting everyone choose a meal for each day of the month, and then she said she only shops for those items for that week.  I thought this was a good idea, but my kids are probably not the best to ask.  They just always eat everything that I put in front of them, but I personally am tired of spagh ...

Social Networking Websites And Personal InfoAug 22, 2011
A friend and I was having a conversation last night about the personal information people put out on these social websites. She read on another friends wall that her husband was in the hospital and gave the room number, name of hospital and telephone number. She was telling me why would someone post that kind of information for all to see. She was saying you don't have to be a PI to track down these people with all the information they give out. People don't use their noggin wha ...

DATING AT 50+Feb 28, 2011
I have been on my own, divorced, for almost 20 years.  In the beginning I went on a couple of dates, but decided I was better off raising my kids and being alone.  My marriage was bad, he cheated, lied, cheated, hardly spent quality time with my kids, and oh yeah, he cheated... often. Anyway.  Kids have grown up, gone on their way and moved out of state.  I have family close by, but for the most part am on my own with a few single friends and a few married friends.  I d ...

Teens And Dating.Jul 29, 2011
Ever get dragged into a marital explosion?  I did yesterday. The situation is that I have a 14 y/o son who is really in love with a 14 y/o girl. They met at church 6 months ago. At first, we only allowed youth activities and then slowly allowed her to come over to our house and be included in family activities. They are never allowed alone at any times although I do allow them to sit together on the couch, and I know they have kissed because my youngest son is a spy! I consider my husband a ...

Dating Younger - One More Question (sm)May 23, 2010
So what would you do if you dated a younger man only to find out that you both had started to have a very strong instant bond, only he wants to have children so he began struggling with that issue? He says it is unfair to take things any further with me because we have gotten so attached...him included, but that he knows he wants to have children.  I am 42, already have two children, and have had a tubal ligation in the past. Obviously, trying to keep him with me would be unfair to him ...

Senior Dating SitesJan 04, 2016
Have any of you older ones had any good experiences with senior dating sites that you can recommend?  I've been looking online, and after reading reviews, they all look like they can potentially rip you off.  Actually, I don't even want to "date" per se, just want a companion to go places with, male or female, which is harder than you might think, especially where I live now.   Anyway, I found that AARP had its own dating site, and I thought - gr ...

Dating Again - Issue With Adult ChildrenJul 12, 2016
I was divorced about 12 years ago.  I dated a little, but have had NO dates in the last 10 years.  Recently I met a wonderful man.  Things have progressed wonderfully and we are now in a serious, committed relationship. I have 2 adult children who live with me.  My son is 26, my daughter is 22.  They are causing major problems.  They REFUSE to spend any time with my new boyfriend.  They DEMAND I tell them when he is coming over, so they can hide in their room ...

Do I Tell A Parent Her Daughter Is Dating A Teen Who Uses Oxycontin Recreationally?Dec 30, 2009
I would certainly want someone to tell me, but you have to realize I live in an area where a lot of parents allow underage drinking.  This particular mother has given liquor to teens, however, I am quite sure she wouldn't like oxycontin and oxycodone.  I do know this for fact that the kid uses.  My son wanted me to tell the parents and then he changed his mind but after I thought about it, I feel if something bad happened, I would feel I should have said something. Online BullyingApr 09, 2010

Do you think they would have the nerve to do such a thing in a face to face meeting? I'm curious. Oh and I'm talking about adult bullying. Do you think adult bullying can have a similar affect if the person they are bullying is already hav ...

I've been trying to find a more inexpensive way to buy groceries.  I don't do couponing much because all the coupons are usually for stuff I don't normally buy.
