Does anyone use any online sites for Bible study?

Posted: Jun 18, 2015

Something that's easy to follow, for a returning/beginning reader to get back into it.   I want to start reading again,  be able to look up things by subject, and so on.   Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

This is a great site for reading the Bible online. It has a very easy to understand Bible. There's also a lot of Bible-based information organized by topic as well as directed at specific groups like children, teens, and families. I think you'd really enjoy the site.

I don't know what faith you are, if any, but you might want to use a site affiliated with that faith.

The thing is that you can interpret the Bible all sorts of ways. It was not written in English, after all, and translating it from one language to another to another introduces variations and changes in meaning. It becomes very easy for people to interpret it any way they want.

Some churches are actually founded on what are considered to be major misinterpretations. Those groups can be very aggressive about proselytizing their cause, so they often have big websites for their version of Bible study. If you are not already trained as a biblical scholar, you will not be able to see what is wrong with their version. You would just assume it to be correct.

Choosing a site affiliated with your own faith will help you avoid that. If you are not affiliated with a church, I suggest going with a site from a major, traditionally oriented church or one that is academically or more nondenominationally oriented.

You will not go wrong using major church websites like Anglican, Episcopalian, Lutheran, Roman Catholic, or Methodist. Their scholarship is very good. Just Google until you find one you like.

If you have concerns about Bible study being hard, first be sure you are using a readable translation. The King James version is not written in modern English. God did not dictate it in that English, either. You do not have to struggle with it. Try something more lovely, like the Jerusalem Bible, or the New English Bible, or more mainstream, like the Revised Standard Version.

Here are some mainstream links:

http://www.elca.org/dailydiscipleship

http://anglicansonline.org/resources/biblical.html

http://threelegedstool.blogspot.com/2009/03/bible-study-online-for-episcopalian.html

I personally think that one of the first things anyone studying the Bible should do is read it through from cover to cover to get some perspective and learn the major story behind it. This link has a very good overview of that. It is not overly complicated, and what you find here will not disagree with other mainstream churches. This is just good, general, Bible scholarship. It has a very strong focus on God's love for us and his covenant with us ... on love, hope, and redemption, not on sinfulness, hellfire and damnation. (If there is anything specifically "Catholic" mentioned to which you object, just skip over it.)

I hope this helps. I wanted to give you something that was genuinely informative and free of off-the-mainstream influence. I do not think you risk being pestered by proselytize with the sites, either.

I also hope that you find God's love in His Word.

Senior Dating SitesJan 04, 2016
Have any of you older ones had any good experiences with senior dating sites that you can recommend?  I've been looking online, and after reading reviews, they all look like they can potentially rip you off.  Actually, I don't even want to "date" per se, just want a companion to go places with, male or female, which is harder than you might think, especially where I live now.   Anyway, I found that AARP had its own dating site, and I thought - gr ...

Online BullyingApr 09, 2010
Do you think people use the anonymity of hiding behind the computer screen as an excuse to get away with bullying others? Do you think they would have the nerve to do such a thing in a face to face meeting? I'm curious. Oh and I'm talking about adult bullying. I know there have been cases on FB and other such sites where teens have been bullied to the point of suicide which is horrible. Do you think adult bullying can have a similar affect if the person they are bullying is already hav ...

I've been trying to find a more inexpensive way to buy groceries.  I don't do couponing much because all the coupons are usually for stuff I don't normally buy. I was looking at Amazon and it is amazing all the stuff they sell.  My question is this.  I see for instance a 12 pack of canned beans for 41.84 (pack of 12).  Does that mean 12 cans?  If so, Amazon is selling for 4 times the amount I pay for at the grocery store.  Am I reading that right?&nb ...

Since then, nothing much has changed in the old south, a newly released study has said. When it was all over, Alvin Robinson was found guilty by a jury of 10 whites and two blacks, and sentenced to 20 years behind bars for a murder he claimed was in self defense.
