Social networking websites and personal info

Posted: Aug 22, 2011

Sealed A friend and I was having a conversation last night about the personal information people put out on these social websites. She read on another friends wall that her husband was in the hospital and gave the room number, name of hospital and telephone number. She was telling me why would someone post that kind of information for all to see. She was saying you don't have to be a PI to track down these people with all the information they give out. People don't use their noggin whatsoever.

Why would she want the world to know that? - Stupid

I am careful what I put out there. For instance, I would never put my birthday or birthdate on FB, nor would I announce that we are going to be out of town . I will however post pics and tell about my trip when I return.

I never put anything personal there that I would not want anyone to know. If all can't know, then none do.

If I were in the hosptital, I would not care if people knew that or my room #. This HIPPA stuff has gotten ridiculous IMHO.

I am always astounded at the personal information people disclose. Every time you fill out a survey, a warranty card, sign up for a service like Netflix or Pandora, sign up for a store loyalty card, send for a free sample, buy something online, talk about your business on Facebook, give out your birthday, phone #, email address, etc. you are adding to an online data base on information that creates a profile of who you are.

You know those sites that people are so surprised to find out about where you can put in your name and it will tell you your address, income level, the value of your house, your education level, etc? And a lot of it is wrong? How do you think they gathered that info? From surveys and warranty cards and all the other stuff you answered thinking it was innocent info that wouldn't go beyond the company that asked for it.

The more you know about data mining, the more cautious you'll be. Even if you never buy anything online or never pay your bills or bank online, the companies you deal with will enter your payments, etc into their data bases and sometimes they sell it or it gets hacked. You can't avoid all of it, you just have to be careful and try to keep as much private as you can.

Sites like Netflix and Pandora, for example, are a double edged sword. It's great that they track your preferences so they can make reasonably accurate predictions for you of what you'll like. On the other hand, that data adds to the online profile of who you are. Not that it's very likely, but if someone with good computer skills and a larcenous intent wanted to, they could find out more about you than your mother knows and completely steal your identity and really damage your life.

Open another browser window and visit few travel sites or shopping sites (atleast for 15-30 minutes) and then go back to MTStars or any other site. You will be seeing Google Ads there related to those industries, not related to MT.

They are not just logging your personal info but also your interests and behaviors, this what they say 'behavioral targeting'.

saw that happen with someone too - it doesn't compute

I read about a woman in Canada who was claiming to be unable to work, but when she got back from a Caribbean vacay posted pictures of herself smiling and frolicing. The disability company promptly closed her file and refused to pay her anymore.

A friend of someone I used to date had the same thing happen to her as your friend - admitted to the hospital and all her information given out by her twin sister on FB. I would think they could use the mass email feature to share those details or limit who can read the wall to just friends.

as she just turned 13. I would not let her put up any personal info like B-day, address, phone #, etc., limited it so only friends or FOF could find her as well and if not her friend they could not see anything but her name basically. But on Thursday she wanted to tell everyone we were going to the beach for the weekend. I was like, NO you don't, afterward we get back fine, but not before. I set all her settings to friends only for her posts (and she is only allowed to friend people she actually knows) but a friend can tell anyone in a matter of seconds (texting, email or actually call) and houses can be burglerized and I know FB is the biggest tool for burglers around. Though our phone is unlisted, etc, I am sure some local kid could figure out where we lived if he tried hard enough. We don't have a lot of crime where we are, petty burglery is pretty much about it, but not about to flash to her little world of friends (15 or so) that we were going out of town. Just not too bright. But she is learning still and always checks with me first so that is good.

Meal Planners... Websites?Mar 15, 2010
Do any of you lovely fellow MTs of mine happen to use a meal planner online where you can chose recipes for the week and it will allow you to print a shopping list? My SIL gave me the idea of letting everyone choose a meal for each day of the month, and then she said she only shops for those items for that week.  I thought this was a good idea, but my kids are probably not the best to ask.  They just always eat everything that I put in front of them, but I personally am tired of spagh ...

Anyone Have Experience With Online Dating Websites?Nov 14, 2013
I'm sort of, kind of, maybe, possibly considering signing up with an online dating website like Christian Mingle or Plenty of Fish.  Do any of you have experience with either of these?  Divorced 6 years (from 2nd husband), I'm finally feeling ready to share my heart again with a nice man.  Since I'm 50% the reason for both divorces, I know that I'm far from perfect...but I feel like I've learned to spot a man who will end being a verbal abuser.  I hop ...

Social Groups??Mar 12, 2013
I have been working at home as a transcriptionist for about 20 years - give or take a temp job from time to time. Are We Going To Keep Social Security Or Abandon It?Sep 22, 2012
Social Security is a progressive entitlement program created by Republicans and Democrats working together. Those conservatives ideologically opposed have always tried to get rid of it, but voters wouldn't let them because it has always served its purpose of protecting us from the possibility of destitution when we're too old to work.  Now their tactic of destroying it by delaying necessary adjustments has successfully brought Social Security to the point of failure. Like a home ...

Trying To Add Some Social Context To My (Work) LifeAug 07, 2016
Hello, I love MT despite all the pay and headache-related issues of the recent past.  I am disabled so I can earn my $1100 per month (which is the maximum Social Security allows) in a way that's feasible from me - from home.  It's pretty perfect.  It just has the drawback of social isolation. I am quite isolated and this is not good.  I have been trying to think of ideas to allay this feeling of isolation (which gets so bad I am having an ECT consultation next wee ...

Changing The Social Paradigm Without Political OppressionOct 04, 2012
Seeing the constant, raging debate in this country day after day I've been thinking a lot about the futility of political change.  True change in the system of politics is both unlikely to happen and potentially ineffective even if it did.  The problem as I see it is that the American culture is now one of endemic greed.  My observation of the rich is that - despite their behavior as soulless, heartless sociopaths - they appear to be identical to poor people, except that they ...

Americans For Prosperity Is A Social Welfare NonprofitMay 13, 2013
I posted a link that was written back in Aug 2012, but it provides a lot of context to the current IRS targeting story.  I'm not by any means defending the IRS.  Targeting based on any predjudice is unacceptable (i.e., churches during Bush Adm that were audited for sermons that were interpreted as anit-war).  I was warned when I itemized one year that claiming a home office was an IRS red flag and to be absolutely within the defiition of a home office because they have progr ...

Thinking About Crime, The Economy And Social UnrestNov 17, 2015
So I was thinking, if I was a criminal, what sort of crime would I do.  I could only think of economic reasons.  There was not one crime for money that I thought would be worth doing and going to jail over.  Selling drugs, burglary, banks, jewelry stores, kidnapping, fraud and swindling.  Nothing would be as good as a good paying job.   If everyone had a job that provided the basics of life, we could do away with at least 50% of the crime and a lot of problems would fix ...

So, In My Social Circle, I've Seem Some Shakeup In The Party SystemJan 13, 2016
Democrats supporting Trump, republicans supporting Sanders, and a few of both parities supporting Rand.  I'm personally behind Sanders.  I know some of his ideas are not doable.  At the same time, maybe he's the guy to at least get the ball rolling.  I'm not dumb enough to believe any politician is completely "real," however, I think Sanders is probably the most "honest" of both party candidates.  I've been paying attention to how he votes and to what ...
