DWTS: I did a little research online, reading

Posted: Nov 18, 2010

what going on with this Bristol-thing.  The most telling are the right-wing and Teaparty websites.   What seems to be coming to light is that this wasn't just a "call your Teaparty friends and vote for Bristol" deal, it's now starting to look like manipulation and voter fraud for political gain.

One person said he tested ABC's online voting system, and discovered that, although you're limited to 5 votes per email address, you aren't limited to the number of email addresses you use.  He said he not only got his 5 votes with each disposable email address he had, but he even got his 5 votes when he logged on with BOGUS, made-up addresses that were just written in email form.  So, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see what is happening.

So now the question is, is this something that ABC, an obviously right-leaning broadcaster, condones, and wanted to happen?  (Stranger things have happened.)  Or, did they really see only as far ahead as their immediate ratings, and the interest in the show that Bristol might generate, and truly not foresee the potential ratings catastrophe next season, that could happen if she wins the trophy?

DWTS's fan base has more Pubs than Dems, mainly because it is an excellent family show.  So I think no one believed for a minute that Bristol wouldn't get more than her fair share of votes, based solely on her mother's prominence (or infamy...) in the political world.

But, based on this problem with ABC's viewer vote-casting system, which has a major flaw that allows it to be manipulated and exploited in the name of the Teaparty, it looks like between now and season 12, the producers of the show are going to have to do some major overhauling of the entire audience-participation scoring system, if they want to make it even remotely credible.

Fool us once, shame on them.   Fool us twice, shame on us.

I believe it is easy to vote multiple times... - Old part-timer

[ In Reply To ..]
I doubt that they care really, since most people don't bother taking the time to vote multiple times and others (including a lot of those who are screaming the loudest about how unfair this is) don't vote at all!

Right after they announced who was going to be on DWTS, talking heads were saying how Bristol was liable to be the first one voted off since her mother was (according to them) disliked. I think right there, they guaranteed that Bristol was NOT going to be voted off early since people decided to prove them wrong.

As far as the controversy, I don't think ABC cares. Controversy equals ratings.

What difference does it make, really?

I don't know why anybody would make a big deal out of it, unless of course they hate the Palins for some reason. Then of course they might be outraged.

It is hilarious how worked up people are getting over a TV show. It was fun to contribute to the cause.

I tried to vote, but couldn't get the web site to work - was going to vote for Kyle.

[ In Reply To ..]
Every time I tried to sign in to process the vote, it just ended up in a processing state. I think the people who were really using 50 or 100 e mails to vote over and over again for bristol- if that is indeed true - tied everything up.

If she wins it will be a little tarnished, I would think, because there is so much out there about people "cheating" the voting system, much like what happened to David Cook when he won Idol instead of Adam Lambert.

I think AI is on its last legs at this point, although I have certainly enjoyed it over the years. Don't know if I'll be watching this season. No, I never did go to any of the tours, did you? I did see Adam Lambert's solo concert this year, though. I totally agree that Kris was a real sweetheart, a class guy all the way.

I said I wasn't going to watch last year after Adam lost, but it just seems to pull me back in every year. LOL. I wish I had seen Adam in concert but he wasn't very close to me when he did come to NYS. I missed this year's tour, but starting with Season 4 I've gone to every tour and met just about every idol. I definitely had my favorite moments. Carrie was really sweet to my daughter and Ace was amazing to his fans. There were some disappointments too, especially Adam not coming out to the two shows I went to because he was sick.

Ummm... my point is proven. - n/m

[ In Reply To ..]
C'mon, "political groups" pushing their agenda?! I think you're starting to lose perception here. If that were the case, I'm sure the haters (of which there are quite a few) could figure out how to swing the vote against her just as easily.

You actually believe that? - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
Whenever you have shows like this it always a popularity contest. I've seen it with Idol (which is why I stopped watching), So You Think You Can Dance, this show and others. It's all favoritism. People don't call in and judge based on who is the best dancer or singer or whatever. They base it on who they like the most, who is the most cutest, etc, etc.

I even saw some crazy message on the political board about how a Tea Party fan site (never heard of that one) is pushing for her to win. And now people have this crazy perception of tying it in with politics and her mother. Maybe a lot of people like her. Maybe she has a lot of friends who call in multiple times (like they do with all shows). Who knows (or cares).

Since I don't watch the show I can't comment on the dancers. I saw the uproar here about it so pulled her up. She's an okay dancer. I've seen worse and I've seen better. But since I don't know her or care anything about her I could care less whether she wins or not. Although since there are so many who hate her venemously I hope she wins. There is way to much going on in this country and with our lives to live in paranoia that right-wingers are the only ones voting for her...and as posters here have said - who cares, and get a grip.
Yup. - nm

On Monday's show Brandy talked about her car accident and how a person was killed, a mother of small children. Brandy wasn't found guilty, but I think bringing that up may have deterred voters. Maybe she was looking for the sympathy vote and it backfired.

I also think her attitude turned a lot of people - sml

off. she was already acting like she had won, basically said she deserved to win. It is okay to be confident in yourself and give yourself a pat on the back, but don't go around saying things like that.

Okay, anyone else shocked (and maybe dismayed) that Brandy went home last night?  I'm not a Brandy fan (she's a little bit too high strung for me), but she, along with Jennifer, surely deserved to be in the final 2.  Bristol Palin HAS improved in the last 2 weeks, but she should have gone home 3-4 weeks ago, if not earlier.  Just sayin'... ...
