election day today

Posted: Jun 5, 2012

Here I am in Wisconsin on my way to the polls saddened by the fact that no matter which way I vote my state is going to be harmed.  Barrett?? Walker?? Is there no one out there anymore who is actually interested in the populace they are SUPPOSED to be working for??

;

go walker - stand for something

How does one get past his stance on equal pay and other women's issues? I sure can't! But Barrett is certainly not a good choice. Sucks when there is no one good!

I hope and pray Scott Walker pulls it off. He has done absolutely nothing wrong but do what he said he would do when he ran for office. Nothing he has done has affected me or my family adversely. Oh too bad, some of the civil employees have to carry some of the weight for their health insurance. We have been doing that for years in the private sector. Suck it up and handle it. Don't whine and recall the gov just because he did what he said he would do when he ran for office. Gee, I thought when we voted someone into office we had to live with until the next election. This whole fiasco has cost millions of dollars and to what end. Do those against him think everything will change tomorrow? I don't think so.

suck it up?? - dnh

those civil employees always did carry some of the weight for their insurance. their gripe is the loss of their collective bargaining rights - that is the only thing. They willingly agreed to pay a higher portion and made other concessions without a fight. It is simply the collective bargaining rights that were lost that created this uproar. People need to be informed of the facts and not just the media spin.

Frankly, I could care less about bargaining rights. I have never been in a union and I have done fairly well without paying union dues and paying people too much money to run them. Yes, suck it up.
I am guessing you meant you "couldn't" care less? - nm

So how well do you suppose you or other workers - would be doing without
[ In Reply To ..]
work standards such as child labor laws, the 8-hour work day, the 40-hour work week, safe and healthy working conditions, worker's comp, minimum wage, overtime, sick, vacation and holiday pay, grievance and arbitration policies, legal recourse for nonpayment of wages, sexual harrassment and discriminatory hiring practices, health, life, disability and unemployment insurance, retirement pensions, social security....even access to public education (yes, unions had a hand in that too). Do you honestly think had unions not fought for these rights which you so casually dismiss, that you would be "doing so well" or that corporations and industries would have extended these rights to you, salaried employees, wage earners and workers out of the goodness of their hearts? Really?

I guess since you have no use for collective bargaining or unions, nobody else should be allowed to join them, organize, bargain for and preserve workers rights either, huh? It's attitudes like this that produced defeat of the Paycheck Fairess Act this afternoon in the Senate. It's 2012, not 1912. Unbelievable!

We have checks and balances in our system of government. No reason we should not have the same set-up in our workplace.

Suck THAT up and while you're at it, keep your hands off others' freedom to join and support unions...or not. It's our choice, not yours.

Apparently you had some private conversation with Walker - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
He never said prior to the original election he was going to gut unions. It astounds me that people do not understand the importance of unions to maintain a living wage, half-ways decent benefits. There are so many MTs who wish they had a union, but are instead, taken avantage of by our isolation and need for a roof over our heads.

apparently.... - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
None of us in my family are in any union and never have been. We are doing just fine without union representation. By the way, our benefits are quite good too. Yes, the governor and I have coffee every morning - right.

Gee, I must have missed the speech about decimating - collective bargaining

[ In Reply To ..]
the moment he took office. It's what he didn't say during the campaign that's the problem. Can't recall his saying anything about rooting out the corruption and prosecuting crimes and misdemeanors that ran rampant right under his nose during his term as County Executive either. Call me crazy, but since he was in charge there, that "I didn't know anything about it" claim to innocence doesn't fly. If he doesn't get his pink slip tonight, we can always hope an orange jump suit awaits him in the not too distant future. He can run, but he can't hide from ongoing John Doe and concurrent federal probes.

They are fighting for their right to collective - bargaining, which SM

doesn't just affect them, it affects all workers. For instance, if one hotel's workers have a union and make sure that wages are fair, another hotel with no union will have to offer fair wage also. Fair pay, fair working conditions, fair treatment, fair holidays, etc. I would think anyone in our industry would support this. The unions were willing to come together with Walker and compromise, but Walker and his ilk want to bust unions for political reasons, has nothing to do with economy. Research this.

the ages of the voters. Since they no longer teach correct history and no civics and economics, the thing that makes me the most afraid is how these millenials will vote.
