Women in Combat Could Hurt Retention,

Posted: Feb 15, 2013

Nearly one in four males in the U.S. Marine Corps said they would leave the service if women were involuntarily posted in combat positions, according to the executive summary of a little-known survey commissioned by Marine Corps leaders and obtained by the Free Beacon. A similar number of Marines of both sexes said they would not have enlisted in the corps if this had been policy at the time. Twenty-three percent of both male and female Marines “said that they would not have joined” if women were involuntarily placed onto the front lines of combat, such as in the infantry, according to a summary of the survey provided to the Free Beacon. Retention rates also could be affected at a time when the Marines are shrinking the force to cope with budgetary constraints. Twenty-two percent of males who were surveyed said they “likely would leave the corps at their next opportunity” if women were involuntarily placed into primary combat roles. Seventeen percent of females surveyed provided a similar answer, a number the report’s author suggests is surprisingly high. The findings overwhelmingly reveal that the introduction of women into combat roles could pose a serious quandary for the nation’s fighting forces, which are struggling to adjust to a recent Pentagon order allowing women to fill combat positions. I strongly doubt they will drag women (who would be) kicking and screaming in protest, onto the front lines.

reservations about the use of the word "involuntary." For instance, I love Oreos, but add the words "involuntarily fed" and now it sounds less appetizing. I can't make too many judgments until I see the actual study. Methodology can mean the difference between fact and fiction.

Regarding the possibility that they will be overprotective of their female companions, I don't really see that as a problem. It sort of implies that currently the marines have no problem with seeing their comrades get hurt. They are all very protective of their own. Part of their fighting strength is their cohesive nature with everyone looking out for everyone else.

Women already are serving in combat situations, they are just changing the classification in a way to reward those women for their service. If you're job description was MT, but you were also QAing other people's work, adding QA to your job description wouldn't change anything except the recognition for your contributions.

The statement that these findings are overwhelming might be stretching it too. They show that a small portion of the Marine population may or may not be able to work well with women. I seriously doubt being ordered to serve with a member of the opposite sex is the hardest order 99.9% of Marines have been given in their time of service even if they did have reservations about doing so.

Lastly, I think it's kind of funny that the article mentions that this could hurt the retention rate for the Marines at a time when - due to budget problems - they will be forced to cut back their numbers. Their two problems are too many people and some people want to leave. Sounds like they have no problems.

Good post/points nm - Fairminded

picking from the survey, which was mostly about voluntary service. Note that we do have a, theoretically at least, "all voluntary" military these days. The overall results of questions about where and how women should serve are about what one would expect.

BTW, the Free Beacon is the paper of the Center for American Freedom -- a newly formed neoconservative group with a healthy budget that does not disclose who funds it. From newrepublic.com: "The chairman of CAF's board, Michael Goldfarb, is a former communications aide to the McCain campaign and a consultant who has worked for Sarah Palin and the Koch brothers."

Regarding "involuntary," although we're supposed to have an all-voluntary military, those inside know that isn't the case. Many have been trapped by involuntary extension of service. Thus, questions of involuntary duty applied to either sex might well have a negative response. Note that involuntary is also how we refer to a draft.

FWIW, I'd guess at least half of those polled are actually worried right now about being themselves involuntarily released and having to find a decent civilian job. I suspect they wouldn't be rushing to resign if their baby sisters were drafted to go guard a gas pipeline in Middle Asia.

Voluntary is a misnomer - pysops - Fairminded

It is 'voluntary' as opposed to the draft but once you sign that paper they own you. Also its a fully paid position, much like *any* voluntary job that civilians have...

I imagine they had similar - "surveys"

that showed that allowing African Americans in combat would hurt retention. Guess what? They got over it.

Older Women Versus Younger Women And Trump/ClintonOct 10, 2016
Women who "like" Trump are invariably older and don't like Hilary Clinton because they were raised in an era of economic competition with each for men. In the old days, men generally took care of their women, and some women lucked out with good men and some stuck it out with bad ones. Young women can take care of themselves economically so aren't as threatened by other women so they're more apt to go for HIllary. Older women also don't like Clinton because she stuck with her ...

Nixing Saturday Mail Delivery Will Hurt Minorities And Single MothersFeb 09, 2013
After the United States Postal Service announced that it intends to stop delivering mail on Saturdays in an effort to cut costs beginning this August, many praised it as a relatively straightforward way to save roughly $2 billion a year. Some lamented the inconvenience of the change and others were alarmed at what that means for post office employees. Not many, though, tied the matter to race or gender. Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) was apparently one of them. He explained on MSNBC: ...
