how do you combat the sedentary life?

Posted: Jun 8, 2011

So the big news is using standing desks because sitting in a chair is bad for you even if you work out regularly.  I tried it today and it would be very hard to get used to it because using the pedal is super annoying.  I'm wondering what you recommend and how you keep from just sitting in the chair for hours on end.  Let's come up with some good ideas for staying active.

Have you tried transcribing while sitting on a pillow on the floor? I sat with sole-to-sole contact or with legs splayed. I placed the monitor on an inverted collapsible crate from the car trunk and the keyboard on pillows. This unconventional "work station" was a creative solution rather than a true comfort choice. I arrived before my workstation (a long-distance move).

it does sound relaxing, but is still sitting. How do you operate your pedal?

Pedal - Plotz

[ In Reply To ..]
If you sit with your feet facing sole to sole, you press with the side of your foot. Or, you slide the "work station" closer to the wall and prop the foot pedal against the baseboard molding, which was more functional.

Standing Ovation. - Lift.

If the workstation had a "hydraulic lift," you could switch between sitting and standing throughout your work shift.

I bought one of those big exercise balls that I sit on instead of my chair occasionally. I don't think I really get more exercise, but it is fun for something different.

Is this the news story you were talking about?

A treadmill desk just sounds so wierd. The woman in the article says she sits for "nearly seven hours a day."  Big whoop.  I would bet my next house payment that most MTs are WAY over the "nearly seven" number.  Give me a break. I'm about 10 hours a day on my big (and flattened!) behind 6 days a week.  With that, I should be dead within the year. Yell

HealthWatch: Sitting Vs. Smoking

Smoking cigarettes is the cause of so much preventable, deadly disease. But now new research shows sitting for long stretches of time may be just as dangerous.

“Smoking certainly is a major cardiovascular risk factor and sitting can be equivalent in many cases,” explained Dr. David Coven.

Dr. Coven is a cardiologist. He says several new studies show prolonged sitting is now being linked to increased risk of heart disease, obesity, diabetes, cancer, and even early death.

“The fact of being sedentary causes factors to happen in the body that are very detrimental,” said Dr. Coven.

Dr. Coven says when you sit for long periods of time; your body goes into storage mode,

When that happens, it stops working as effectively as it should. What’s worse, the more hours a day you sit, the greater your likelihood of developing one or more of these diseases, just as with smoking.

Linda Caufield has a desk job. She sits nearly seven hours a day.

“I’m on the computer, I’m on the phone, I’m doing paperwork so all that stuff has to be done at my desk,” she said.

Linda had no idea her desk was so deadly, noting how “sitting is probably killing me.”

Paul Golin says he was sitting up to eight hours a day. But after a recent heart health scare, he bought a “stand up” desk. It’s a contraption that rests on a treadmill.

“I turn on the treadmill and walk for about an hour a day,” said Golin.

Golin’s measures may seem extreme but so are the consequences of sitting. Dr. Coven says just get up and move when you can.

“Any time you get the blood pumping, the blood moving, it stimulates the organs to do things that are healthier,” said the cardiologist.

If you think that hour of cardio you do every day negates the effect of your desk job, think again.

So get up at the office at any chance you get, don’t send emails when you can deliver the message in person, take the stairs, stand up when you take a phone call. And don’t forget to take your breaks, and take a walk.

Yes, that was the study I was thinking of. I did try it, putting my laptop on a high "desk" but the foot pedal was annoying. I had to tap the pedal, listen to a phrase, type the phrase, then hit the pedal again. I would definitely lose time. Maybe the key is to set the timer and get up every half hour or so. It's just one of those occupations that I think sitting is just part of the deal, but would like any ideas. Some other way to activate the pedal would be great.

Exercise when you're not working. - sweetgirlsmom

I walk in place while I watch TV and have lost 30 pounds in 3 years. It saves time because I do two things at once. I hate regular exercise but don't mind walking, so I stay with it. Walking on carpet is easy on my joints, unlike jogging outside. There is no equipment to buy and store and set up each day. I don't have the cost of a health club or spend time driving back and forth. I don't have to go out in bad weather to exercise. It can be done with children at home instead of paying a babysitter so mom can go out to exercise.

I feel sluggish after hours of typing, so I get up and watch a show. Moving around gets my body out of the slump and I return to work refreshed. I type faster when I type 4, walk 1-2, type 4, than if I work 8 hours straight. Exercise also releases endorphins which makes me feel better overall. I started with just 1/2 hour and was too tired to continue, but now have built up to 2 hours straight.

It this doesn't sound good, find something else that works for you.

water aerobics at the healthclub. - mt

[ In Reply To ..]
It's a combination of aerobics and resistance training actually, and does not put stress on your joints because you are weightless in the water. Feels like you are not exercising...until the next morning, anyway. Arise slowly off of that pillow, is my advice. I try to get there every other day which is perfect, because on that third day I don't hurt anymore and ready to take the plunge again.

Deep water exercise is even better, where there is no touching the bottom.

The trainers we have really know their stuff, too. When they say, "now we're going to work the (fill in the blank) muscles," those are the ones I feel the next day.

Twenty-three percent of both male and female Marines “said that they would not have joined” ...

O'Reilly has spent years and years bloviating about all the time he's spent in combat. All this video and audio will be surfacing thanks to Bill-O's little name-calling tirade last night. Should be fun to watch.
