Wisconsin--Taking away voting rights

Posted: Sep 8, 2011

Madison -- A low-level state employee was fired Thursday after he sent an email to his fellow employees telling them about the state Department of Transportation’s policy on giving out free photo identification cards for voting. Chris Larsen, who had worked in the mail room at the state Department of Safety and Professional Services, sent an email Thursday morning to all employees at the agency’s headquarters explaining that the DOT would provide photo IDs to people only if they specifically asked to have the fee waived. A couple of hours later, Larsen was fired. Larsen, however, said he had not previously been disciplined. In May, Republicans approved a requirement that voters show photo ID at the polls starting next year. They also told the DOT to give out free IDs for voting purposes to ensure the ID requirement was not an illegal poll tax. The department began giving out the free IDs in July but told employees in a memo to provide them for free only if people asked not to be charged. If they don’t ask, they are charged $28. ;

not voter suppression - dnh

It is not voter suppression. What is the problem with asking for an ID to vote? It is common sense. Right now, anyone can walk in and say your name and address and vote as you. Anyone who thinks that's okay, really needs to think again. You can't drive, write a check, buy cigarettes or alcohol, travel by air or train, among other things, without an ID, either. So get real. This is a measure to protect voters and prevent fraud, plain and simple.

Take the following into consideration... - JS

1. The GOP effort to put an end to unions, generally large contributors to democratic campaigns.

2. The recent GOP pushes to have state-issued IDs in order to vote which will disporportionally affect those who are likely to vote Democratic (especially lower income and student voters).

3. GOP efforts to stop college students from voting within the state as well as ending Election Day registration.

4. Stunts like the one that Americans for Prosperity/Koch Bros. tried during the recent Wisconsin recall elections where they sent out mailers to Dem voters reminding them to have their votes in by Wednesday (I'm using Wednesday here instead of a specific date because I'm too lazy to Google). Meanwhile, the election was actually Tuesday. And in case they decided to have it in early, I believe an incorrect mailing address was given just as a backup.

The plan is to win elections by cutting off the funding and cutting off the votes to the other side. The whole ending voter fraud thing is just a candy coating to make it more palatable.

Charging $28 for an ID that should be free? - Worst scam since Bernie Madoff

Voter suppression, pure and simple.

at all.

So, this guy gets fired for alerting his coworkers on the DOT's sudden policy change... and he gets canned?? Where's the crackdown here? And why would the DOT just go ahead and change the fee policy? Wonder who/where that order came from.

Regardless, it's still 100% wrong to be charging people. I'm on a very tight budget, and with a little over $28 ($30 and change), I get 5 breakfasts and 5 lunches out of it to pack for my BF to take to work. Not go hungry all day long during the week at work or get a card with your picture on it... hmmm.... wonder what people would choose.

This Is What I See Coming For WisconsinMar 17, 2011
I have copied and pasted something someone wrote that pretty much sums up Scott (slime) Walker's intentions.   Diane Ravitch has it in a nutshell. Of Scott Walker, she writes: He expects that over time, most public workers will stop paying dues, especially now that they have to pay more for their healthcare and pension benefits. And thus will he cripple, perhaps permanently, a perennial political opponent. If Gov. Walker succeeds, there will be no organized voice to oppose hi ...

I spent the last few hours reading it (I really hate legalese-LOL) then did a search on collective bargaining. I did see where they wanted to tie raises to the CPI but can't find it now. Anyway, the pages that I found CB in the search are: Pgs. 955-964, 998, 1045, 1061, 1312, 1332-1334. So, tell me where they are stripping collecitve bargaining from the unions.
