Wisconsin business received letter from union threatening boycott

Posted: Apr 1, 2011

This is what the unions are up to lately. I think it's ridiculous. This is a free country and they are threatening to boycott businesses that do not put their signs in the store supporting the union. They are out of control.  So now they apologize....is that supposed to make everyone feel better?

UNION GROVE - Local union members apologized to business owners Thursday after hearing union leadership threatened to boycott businesses.

The stunning development happened late Thursday afternoon at Village Dollar, where members with the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees showed their support to businesses that were targeted.

It all started after Dawn Bobo, owner of Village Dollar in Union Grove, refused to put up a sign supporting AFSCME.

The public union is against Governor Scott Walker's plan to take away most collective bargaining rights for its members.

Bobo didn't want to take sides, fearing she would offend customers.

"I have customers from all walks of life, "she said. "In a tough economy you need everyone here."

But apparently that wasn't good enough for AFSCME Union Rep. Jim Parrett, who sent her a letter that reads in part:

"We'd ask that you reconsider taking a sign and stance to support public employees in this community. Failure to do so will leave us no choice but do a public boycott of your business."

"It rubbed me the wrong way," said customer John Charnon.

If this is what the Democrats call democracy, then they really need to educate themselves with a history lesson or two. Threatening and intimidating businesses is uncalled for and is not going to win any "union points" with the voters, unless they live in Venezuela. Who in the h**l do they think they are?!

Threats and intimidation? Unions? GASP! - say it ain't so.

[ In Reply To ..]
They know who the he$$ they think they are....they pay the DNC well to take care of them when they are in power. We are seeing all kinds of things today that the Democrats consider democracy....like circumventing it whenever it suits them, run like cowards from a vote because they know they can't win...

yup...straight Republican ticket again in 2012 for the second time in my life. Until the middle of the road Democrats can wrestle their party back from the far left...ANYTHING but a Democrat is my motto.

Of course it rubbed him the wrong way - That is understandable

[ In Reply To ..]
It all makes sense now. I can definitely see why it rubbed him the wrong way. I'll bet he didn't like it at all.

I don't want anyone falling over when I say that I completely agree that this was a horrible thing to do... 100% wrong. Especially in light of the way I feel about small business owners who are feeling the squeeze bad enough as it is (I'm assuming the dollar store is a small business). I don't agree with bullying from anywhere, whether it's Scott or a union head.

Feel free to stand back up now.

would these boycotts organized by the Christian conservative AFA (American Family Association) pushing various political agendas also be considered "thuggish?"

Keep in mind, this is only ONE conservative group's boycott activities.

by my read, the conversation between the store manager and union rep was civil. When they found out she was "rubbed the wrong way," they apologized. Much ado about nothing.

Boycotts are American as apple pie and are nothing more than a form of freedom of speech.

oookkkkk...you tell me who has more punch... - unions or a conservative

[ In Reply To ..]
group? And in case you missed the rather HUGE point...they were going to boycott simply because the man would not advertise their union in his store window. THAT is bullying and intimidation, and unions use that tool like a club. Have you ever been through an attempted unionization and voiced any opposition? When you have (as I did) you will learn the meaning of bullying and intimidation.

There is a difference in unions bullying and some conservative group just not buying the product. I don't think the union guy meant his members were not going to shop at the dollar store anymore. LOL.

You are the one who has missed the point. - sm

The OP poses a legitimate question. The issue is not who has more punch. If that is your measure of bullying and intimidation, then the AFA would win that title hands down. They have been known to stage boycotts for years and years that resemble soft fatwahs. They sink their teeth in like bulldogs with a bone, make a lot of noise, publicize their cause and try to simply wear down the establishment that has somehow offended them. They do not go quietly into the night after apologizing for rubbing somebody the wrong way.

You cannot argue this based on the reason people use boycotts, what they are trying to accomplish or whether or not the political agenda they are pushing is valid. There is nothing HUGE about what you misidentify as the point, which is the fact that boycotts are common, normal, almost mundane methods of consumer activism employed in protest, usually political in nature.

We are not talking about your personal experience with unions, on which you base your opposition to them here, but to answer your question, I HAVE felt every bit as intimidated by bosses in non-union settings as you describe in your encounter. Fact is that we are talking about boycotts and whether or not using them consists of threats, bullying and intimidation. Your answer to the question is hypocritical, plain and simple. Boycotts cannot be \"thuggish\" when used by one group, but not when used by another.

Bottom line here is that conservative media has overused these buzz words ad nauseum over the past month or so and have rendered them impotent. They have not succeeded in turning public opinion against public employees and middle class working folks who support collective bargaining. The recalls are ongoing and on schedule and Wisconsinites are still counting down to 366.

The train has left the station. Cons picked the wrong fight and will have to deal with all the fallout they have created.

I'm not the poster you are replying to, but if "we are not talking about your personal experience with unions," they why did you mention YOUR experience with non-unions in the next sentence? We are not talking about cons and their boycotts. Really, who cares about that?

To get back on topic, we were talking about unions and their tactics. Do you support what this union did to the store?
COME on. The history of unions works - against them and all this
[ In Reply To ..]
flowery rhetoric does not change that. I have had difficult bosses, but I have never had anyone treat me like union organizers did. Which only served to make me more steadfast in opposition.

The point is...you have a large organized group who individually send emails to large companies (I know who the AFA is and how they operate) saying they don't like, for instance, not calling Christmas Christmas, instead calling it Holiday, and if it doesn't change they will not shop there anymore. Period. No bullying there. Not saying if you don't put up an AFA banner we will boycott you.

I will use your words. The train has left the station. Unions/Dems picked the wrong fight starting in Wisconsin and they are going to have to deal with all the fallout they caused.

Thanks for the conversation.

Wow! I didn't realize all those boycotts had happened - Interesting!

[ In Reply To ..]
I really wasn't aware of those boycotts. I actually did learn something today.

Do what the OP did...google. He/she probably - didn't know either when

[ In Reply To ..]
he/she went looking for a rebuttal. Big difference...the union was going to boycott the poor guy just because he would not let them put their union sign in his window.

LOL. Not even remotely the same thing...I don't think the union was just going to stop shopping at the dollar store...LOL.
You say this as if you know the substance of all those - AFA boycotts.
[ In Reply To ..]
Again, it does not matter what motivates the boycotts. You cannot have it both ways, meaning that unons who boycott are thugs and Christian cons who do the same are not. By the way, I did not have to go looking for a rebuttal. I became aware of the AFA in 1996 when they tried boycotting DisneyLand behind an anti-gay schtick. Needless to say, their 9-year boycott accomplished nada, zero, zilch.

Fact is, NEITHER of them are doing anything more than exercising First Amendment rights. This is a non issue.
Have never seen the AFA boycott anyone - because they would not
[ In Reply To ..]
put an AFA banner in their window. Come ON. Not even remotely the same thing.

While they may both be exercising first ammendment rights, one does it through veiled threat and intimidation (unions). AFA has never boycotted anyone because they refused to put up an AFA banner or sign.

Therein lies the difference, and that is why it IS an issue.

Read the article. It's not just a boycott. We probably all have participated in boycotts at one time or another. You are free to boycott any place of business you want and do it at any time you want.

This was not just a boycott. This was a threat. Big difference.

They apologized. Good for them. Does that mean they are changing their tactics? My guess is no.
