General Powell supports single payer Obamacare

Posted: Dec 10, 2013

ABC news reported General Powell's statement:

“I am not an expert in health care, or Obamacare, or the Affordable Care Act, or however you choose to describe it, but I do know this: I have benefited from that kind of universal health care in my 55 years of public life,” Powell said, according to the Puget Sound Business Journal, last week at an annual “survivors celebration breakfast” in Seattle for those who, like Powell, have battled prostate cancer.  “And I don’t see why we can’t do what Europe is doing, what Canada is doing, what Korea is doing, what all these other places are doing.”

Europe, Canada and Korea all have a “single-payer” system, in which the government pays for the costs of health care.

Some Democrats who strongly advocated for, and failed to get, a single-payer system in the 2010 Affordable Care Act, still believe the current law doesn’t go far enough to reform the US health system.

A retired four-star general and former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Powell told the audience about a woman named Anne, who as his firewood supplier, faced a healthcare scare of her own.  Anne asked Powell to help pay for her healthcare bills, as her insurance didn’t cover an MRI she needed as a prerequisite to being treated for a growth in her brain.  In addition, Powell’s wife Alma recently suffered from three aneurysms and an artery blockage.  ”After these two events, of Alma and Anne, I’ve been thinking, why is it like this?” said Powell.

“We are a wealthy enough country with the capacity to make sure that every one of our fellow citizens has access to quality health care,” Powell.  “(Let’s show) the rest of the world what our democratic system is all about and how we take care of all of our citizens.”

Powell, who has taken heat from Republicans for twice endorsing President Obama’s election and reelection bids, said he hopes universal healthcare can one day become a reality in the U.S.  ”I think universal health care is one of the things we should really be focused on, and I hope that will happen,” said Powell.  ”Whether it’s Obamacare, or son of Obamacare, I don’t care.  As long as we get it done.”

When single-payer system was not worked into the ACA, my nonexpert opinion was that the ACA was in store for rough times. It obviously had a lot of good things in it, but the way I understood single payer and the ACA, I didn't see how it would work without single payer.

Lots of dynamics back then with the Blue Dogs and the Dems who threatened and some who I think did vote against because ACA didn't go far enough.

When one considers the enormity of health insurance and all the social/financial implications, it's no surprise how this has been such a rocky beginning to what hopefully will evolve into something that benefits all Americans.

What frustrates me is, yeah, I can understand opposition from the Republicans in the Rep vs Dem mindset, but what I don't understand is why everyone couldn't just sit down together and iron things out instead of the brick wall mentality on the part of Republicans.

Why not just pick it apart and introduce bills to amend parts of the ACA to improve it in what ever way the Reps thought needed improving instead of bill after bill to repeal it?

One way or another the ACA will evolve and IMO eventually work, maybe by eventually turning into a single-payer system, but Americans would have been better served in a more timely manner by both parties working together.

I think Powell was right on in his statement.

Great post--honest opinion - The pause that refreshes-nm

the only place we disagree is "the brick wall mentality on the part of the republicans." I may be wrong, but I don't think there would be any way the dems would admit that the ACA isn't going to work as written and would be very reluctant, if not outright opposed, to picking it apart and using what could actually work. There are some very good ideas in the bill, as agreed by many reps. I think from the very beginning, they should have started with the ideas that everyone agreed on and tried to come up with ways they could make those things work. Start out with preexisting conditions, for example, and see how that could be implemented. Then move on from there, piece by piece.

Maybe with the elections coming up, we will see a new wave of congressmen and women coming in with the idea that if they all work together, give and take, the right things can get done. Call me a crazy optimist :)

Okay, so let's not call it anything, but - sm

we will never know if any proposals by the Reps would have been well received by the Dems since unfortunately nothing was proposed, just repeal, that I am aware of anyhow.

I am an optimist as well and I can't help but think if there had been some kind of civil effort on the part of the Reps to amend rather than constant votes to repeal, the Dems would not be completely opposed, but again, we'll never know.

But at least the Reps could have said: Hey, we tried. We introduced this bill to change this and this bill to fix that, but Dems wouldn't listen. All they have now is a record of staunch opposition. Americans are losing their patience.

Regarding the elections and the new wave, I just hope our elected officials, old and new, will realize it's not about them or which side "wins." It's about us. Just work together to get something done. I'm not so optimistic, but we can only hope! :-) back atcha

Single Payer For AllJul 26, 2017
If we really want single payer it makes sense to include items that will reduce the cost for everyone. 1. We need to remove malpractice insurance and malpractice lawsuits. If we left these in place we'd force doctors to practice defensive medicine. Anyone complaining of intercostal muscle strain must be kept overnight in the hospital and submit to a battery of tests to rule out a heart problem. 2. Speaking of heart problems... Most of those are due to a bad diet (not to mention obesi ...

Physicians For Single PayerJul 24, 2017
The program would be funded by the savings obtained from replacing today’s inefficient, profit-oriented, multiple insurance payers with a single streamlined, nonprofit, public payer, and by modest new taxes based on ability to pay. Premiums would disappear; 95 percent of all households would save money. Patients would no longer face financial barriers to care such as co-pays and deductibles, and would regain free choice of doctor and hospital. Doctors would regain autonomy over patient care. ...

1) Have it collapse so that single payer can be implemented amidst the ensuing chaos. 2) Have that happen on somebody else’s watch.
