Obama supports 2 years free community

Posted: Jan 8, 2015

Hope this doesn't go the way of Medicaid Expansion, if the state doesn't put up their end, that it doesn't happen.  I live in one of those neanderthal states that doesn't support Medicaid Expansion, and if given the option they may not support this either.

that people who now get free insurance can go get the medical attention they need, while those of us that are paying thousands of dollars a year for insurance and high deductibles can't afford to go the doctors. If we need to go to the doctors now, since Obamacare, not only do we pay the monthly premimums of $362.00 a pay period, we also have to pay the office visit of $118.00 until we reach our deductible. But just as long as the people who get free insurance gets the care they deserve then all is well, right. I have been the doctors once last year and my husband twice because we can't afford the deductible of $2,000 per person per year for doctors visits on top of the monthly premiums. So I might as well as flush that $8700 down the toilet, oh but sorry, its helping pay for the people that can't afford insurance. Sorry about that. Our chronic medical problems are not as important now are they?

If they are truely indigent they would qualify for Medicaid so there is no reason not to go to the doctors.

So call me a prude, or whatever else you would like to call me, dislike this post or whatever, but since you are not in my pocketbook don't tell me how to feel.
What you are describing is what most of us - have had to put up with for years
[ In Reply To ..]
With regards to health insurance. That is exactly how most of the policies (now grandfathered, but still the same) provided by the MTSOs work.

Huge deductibles and you must pay everything out of pocket until you reach them, then lots of cost sharing, because supposedly that gives us some "skin in the game" - as though somehow you would overuse the services (like who could afford to anyway?).

How on earth do you think Obamacare made that happen, insurance companies have been operating that way for decades and ever since I have worked for an MTSO (probably 8 years now) it has been the same garbage.

I think the insurance you are describing above is not Obamacare, is it? It is probably the same grandfathered junk that most of us have been putting up with for years.

Obamacare, I believe, would be much better for most of us if we could get it due to the subsidies, but of course we are forced to accept the garbage grandfathered policies our MTSOs get from the insurance companies. That is not Obamacare's fault, but I wish they would allow a choice. I would choose Obamacare in a New York minute.

I should say that you are able to access the ACA exchange insurance rather than your company one, but you must prove your income is low enough (most of us would probably be eligible, but I would rather just get a second job). Unless, of course, you live in one of those states where they try to prohibit access.

I just am wondering why you think what you are describing is attributable to Obamacare. Most of us have had this situation for years.
Derr....no nothing is free, but it will become - accessible to many to
[ In Reply To ..]
whom the start of a college education is seemingly unaccessible. It will jump start many who should be in college, who can't find the funds to attend. Once there, hopefully they will receive funds via scholarships, work/study (also a federally funded program "oh my"), find part-time jobs that they will understand they can work while attending (as college attendees frequently score better part-time jobs, i.e. UPS) and they can see their way to finishing a degree program. This may be a rather vocational program, rather than the heady Ivy League liberal arts programs, but this could be very useful for a large part of the population.

I would much rather be footing the bill for programs such as these than supporting Wall Street. Yes, separate issue, (no, not deflection) but that is where the money is going, and eventually this has to be broken down.

Just talking here, because I haven't seen any particulars, but with as many MTs in dire straits with careers, I would think this might be a welcome initiative. I don't know if there are age requirements or prior college attendance exclusions, but this might come as a "retraining" program for some and might be really welcome.

Somethings are worth paying for as a nation. Education really should come first.
Also - will that free two years of college apply - to us older people? If so, Im IN!

and makes progress toward a degree. The credits earned either have to transfer fully toward a 4-yr program or job training programs that lead to degrees and certificates sought by employers. States provide about a quarter of the costs without reducing existing funding obligations. These criteria are very similar to those associated with various student loan programs.

Do you live in a county that supports a college? - IMANMT2
[ In Reply To ..]
My county supports 2. The 2 towns, 15 minutes apart, each are less than 9,000 population. Our county has the third highest property tax in the state, including Johnson county #1 that has Kansas City, KS, and as an aside, our state legislature just was held in violation of Kansas's constitution by not spending enough of the budget money on public education - their solution is to change the constitution so they aren't breaking the law.

You can see how much of your taxes goes straight to the college you support and your question should be, why do our children have to pay tuition when we are donating millions a year to support the school - just one? One of the schools threw some free tuition at our children when the economy tanked because they were afraid their gravy train was about to be sidelined.

Maybe the take away isn't nothing is really free but that you usually don't get what your money should be buying you. And money is finite, there is x amount floating around in an economy, when someone wants more and gets it, that means somebody else has to give up theirs.

It is an archaic attitude. You have already paid for it, you just aren't benefitting from pre-paying... someone else is. Probably the administration and athletics department.

One of the colleges had some money embezzled by a coaches' wife working in the office. The school completely missed it and it was caught in an independent audit. The disclosed amount was 250,00 to 500,000 dollars BUT that might not be close to what was really taken. A house the money was supposed to be hidden in burnt to the ground shortly after the discovery of the theft. I'm not sure those people ever went to prison, I think they were ordered to pay the money back. My point is, there was so much money flying around they couldn't track it and when/if they discovered a loss the school wanted to keep it quiet lest the public say WHAT? How much money? (Maybe the amount they get should be changed.) Alas, we, the citizenry, are not the sharpest tools in the shed (luckily for everyone involved) so this is ancient history and forgotten by all.
I should add here illegal immigrants have been - IMANMT2

eligible for free college tuition for years. A local rep told me they couldn't get enough votes at Topeka to strike the law - the best he could do was make people quit displaying flags of other countries on their cars, I think like vanity plates or something. Well, I guess that is something the people could get behind. It's very showy, not very effective or important but it's very showy.

1. Attendance at an accredited Kansas high school for three or more years (any grades 9-12) and

2. Graduation from an accredited Kansas high school or a GED issued by Kansas.

In-state tuition is not free college tuition.

[ In Reply To ..]
Where do you come up with this. It seems to be the pubs are the only ones fighting for the middle class. Nothing is free. It may be free to some but the price tag will just be pushed onto the rest of us that don't qualify for free anything. You think the colleges are going to absorb the tab for that. No they won't, but those of us that do not qualify for free anything will pay the price in higher tuition.

Just like Obamacare. Those of us that don't qualify for free health care or who have employer sponsored health care are paying double or triple and high deductibles. I pay 2-1/2 times what I paid for our insurance in 2013 and can't afford to go to the doctors because of all the deductibles I have to pay before the insurance will pay.

I paid $8700 to the insurance company last year and they did not pay out a dime for either my husband or myself. We paid out of pocket for our doctors appointments last year.

So please don't give anything free cause I can't afford to keep picking up the tab for people who qualify for free anything anymore.

I'm beginning to believe if you can't afford it go without it. Sorry that sounds harsh but thats the way I feel.

I want the pubs to do everything they can to repeal Obamacare. Obama will go down in history as the worst president because of Obamacare. Please don't come on here and _____ about me being unfair. Its unfair I paid the insurance company $8700 dollars and can't afford to go to the doctors while someone who can't afford health insurance can go.

So please keep your free college and if I can't afford to pay for college or put my kids through college we won't go. Bottom line.

How many college graduates do you know that graduated college and can't get a job in the field they were trained for? I know a few. So a college education does no good without jobs and I'm not talking about low paying jobs.

Obviously you are on the receiving end of this lovely plan of his and that would be lovely for you, but for me I have had enough "presents" during his administration and don't care to get anymore presents from him.

Are you willing to have your SS benefits cut or eliminated, right when you're going to need them most? It can only continue if our citizens can continue to get educations and jobs.

Not only that, but maybe that 2 years of free college education will apply to those of us trying to scrape by on SS, as well. I'd like the chance to get a better education and job, too. Then, when they start coming, I'd be less dependent on those social security checks, and could continue to contribute to society and its tax base.

Why does he need to give 2 years of free college when you can get government grants every year as long as you keep up your GPA?

Anything Obama comes up with I am suspect too. And I even voted for him. Don't have to call me dumb cause I have been calling myself worse than that.

Unless things have changed in the last 12 years. My son and daughter put themselves through college with government grants. They even got money for books and expenses. As long as they kept their GPA above a certain level (can't remember what that was) they continued to get grants each semester. Then if their grant was not enough then they had to take out a student loan for the remaining balance. If they did not maintain their GPA they had to pay the grant back.

If they still give out government grants like this and student loans then if you want a college education you need to pay for it. No different than a scholarship, they have to continue to meet certain criteria to keep that scholarship. There are lots of strings attached to this including need to transfer to a 4 year college and that is not free or obtain a certificate in certain careers.

I may be wrong about all the conditions but I still don't see a benefit.

When a proposal such as this comes along, it has to do more with ALLOCATION. How much of the money we ALREADY PAY is allocated to this, that, or the other thing. It doesn't mean everyone's personal taxes get raised every time a possibility to help the everyday person is discussed.

Remember that word: "ALLOCATION". It's not about raising taxes.
