Playing the "religion card."

Posted: Aug 26, 2012

It is sad, but eventually the "religion card" will be played. I am not of the Mormon faith, but I personally know quite a few people who are. The Mormons (Latter Day Saints) I know are amazingly moral, charitable, kind, loving people. Their beliefs are no stranger than some of my own religious beliefs (evangilitical) probably seem to the unbeliever. They serve in the military for our freedoms, they teach in our schools, they are nurses and doctors in our hospitals. Why shouldn't they take part in our government?  Be careful about buying into the negatively that will be spread in an effort to affect your vote. There is a lot at stake for the future of our country in the upcoming election. There are two clear choices being presented.

I think it's a reasonable consideration.... - SK

A person's religious and spiritual affiliations and views can't help but influence one's political views, even in a secular government. For most people of faith, it's the backbone of who they are. I don't think it's unreasonable to look at a candidate's religious background and beliefs to see where their values lie.

a story they latched onto and milked for YEARS? The extremicans have not a single leg to stand on in this argument.

IMO, policies on women's reproductive rights and healthcare issues that affect more than half the electorate AND their spouses; indiscriminate budget slashing of assistance programs marked by palpable condescension toward single parenting challenges that affect mothers AND their children; and the intrusion by partisan zealots in office who are on a crusade to redefine everything from rape, incest and contraception to "legitimate" American family composition, are all issues of paramount concern for voters. Whether such approaches to policy making are based on religious beliefs or garden-variety ignorance that has plagued extreme American value systems now for centuries, is secondary.

The hypocrisy of declaring religion off-base, coming out of a party that is forever trying to inject narrow interpretations on Christian theologies into our legislative codes, both on federal and state levels, while conducting witch hunts against an entire population of Moslems and Shariah law that is practiced half-way 'round the world, is gag-worthy. As long as those party fringers, who have forcefully usurped the formerly less extreme GOP party and its platform, are driving national campaign dialog and digging in with both heels in their efforts to install an oligarchic theocracy in DC, this avenue of inquiry is fair game and is legitimized by their own actions, not those of their opponents who are taking their cues and responding in kind.

The thing is there's no telling WHAT an individual will decide to base their vote on and, as has been American tradition since the dawn of the Republic, no one individual, group or national party is empowered to set ground rules and dictate what is and is not an acceptable way to go about deciding which candidate is going to get voter support. Case in point would be the dog-whistle appeals to the bigotry vote.

Democracy is messy. Always has been, always will be. There is no qualifier in the 1st Amendment extending freedom of speech that limits it to what's "nice" or "polite." Should there be any doubt about this, just ask Allen West.

JFK's Catholicism was a major hurdle. - We've yet to see a first Jewish president.

One religion barrier cleared in recent memory and another overcome on local levels only but not for the presidency. Right or wrong, religion still matters.

Grandchildren Playing Outside.Feb 02, 2015
My grandchildren are 8 and 4.  They live in the city, without much of a yard.  They do not go outside unsupervised when they are at home with their parents.  When they do go outside, it is usually to a nearby playground, park, etc.  We live in the country and have a 1-1/2 acre yard, with a swing set for them.  There are windows across the back of the house, and I can see them in the back yard.  I find that they mostly want to stay indoors and watch TV, or play vide ...

Trump Playing Us For Suckers?Apr 26, 2011
(CNN) -- The disappointing thing about most phonies is that they don't have staying power. Once they get caught, they give it up and skulk off into the night, never to be heard from again. Think of Rosie Ruiz, say, who pretended to win the Boston Marathon by sneaking out of a crowd of bystanders ahead of everybody in the last half-mile of the race. That's why I like Donald Trump so much. When it comes to pretending to run marathons, he never quits. For more than 20 years he' ...

Carson Playing With Fire--PROVABLE LYINGNov 06, 2015
WASHINGTON - Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson's campaign said on Friday he never applied nor was accepted to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, apparently contradicting an account in Carson's autobiography that he had been offered a full scholarship by the prestigious school. http://www.politico.com/story/2015/11/ben-carson-west-point-215598?cmpid=sf And, on no, Dr. Carson, "the stupids" watching FOX did not become better educated by watching FOX. Credit Card OfferFeb 01, 2011
I need some advice from my MT friends.  My apologies in advance if you think this post is too long to read.  My thanks to those who stick through it!! Some background:  My parents are elderly and. about 5 years ago, they moved into a retirement community.  I bought the house and have been here since that time.  Needless to say, the mail forwarding has since stopped for quite some time.  This afternoon, I got an offer in the mail for a CitiBank credit card, but it w ...

Liberals Using Race CardMay 01, 2010
"The liberals that are making false accusations about Tea Partiers must stop!! This is dirty, outrageous, and wrong!! The Democrats and liberals in the media have consistently entered into a smear campaign of tactics consisting of false accusations, hateful rhetoric, and incendiary comments. One particular brand of false accusations that comes to my mind is how the liberals recently have been making charges that Tea Partiers are racists without having one iota of proof to back up their claims. ...

Debit Card Charges?Oct 05, 2011
There has been a lot on the news about banks starting to charge a monthly fee to use a debit card unless you carry a very large balance.  Will you voice your disapproval and move your accounts to another bank if your bank starts charging?  I think that bank boycotts could be very effective. Excessive Credit Card Fee'sJan 23, 2015

Excessive credit card interest charges.  I get my statements, pay my bills, a couple times late if I don't get paid on time.  No where in the statement did I see anything that would lead me to realize they were going to charge me this, and I didn't realize they did it for 2 months (my fault for not reading the statement closer) My payment ...

Eileen Aj Connelly, AP Personal Finance Writer, On Sunday February 21, 2010, 2:29 pm EST NEW YORK (AP) -- Your next credit card statement is going to contain an ugly truth: how much that card really costs to use. Now, thanks to a long-awaited law that goes into effect Monday, you'll know that if you pay the minimum on a $3,000 balance with a 14 percent interest rate, it could take you 10 years to pay off. So Nervous About Target Debit CardApr 05, 2013
I was shopping at Target recently and a clerk told me about the Target debit card where you automatically get 5% off on purchases. I jumped on it, filled out an application, and now I'm a serious nervous wreck when I think about all the information I gave up, which was everything - name, address, phone number, social security number, driver's license and bank account number. What an idiot! I regret it a thousand times over now. I'm so paranoid about identify theft, I can' ...

Debit Card Fraud Take My AdviceMay 10, 2013

This is sooooo stoopid!!! What do they want the President to do? I guess the President needs to sit at his desk 24 hours/day. After all, he can only handle one catastrophe at a time. I think our President needs to move his office and staff to a boat and park it next to the gusher. Hopefully, that will make people happy. Another Reason To Keep Religion Out Of Gov'tFeb 12, 2010
The Virginia House of Delegates, their version of the House of Representatives, passed a bill on Wednesday that bans companies from tracking their employees with implanted microchips. On the surface, the bill sounds libertarian, albeit in a far-sighted Blade Runner sort of way. But it turns out that the bill’s sponsor was motivated by a more Old Testament perspective: stopping the rise of the Antichrist. "My understanding—I'm not a theologian—but there's a prophecy i ...

Freedom Of Religion.May 08, 2010
This country was founded on the needs of free women and men to practice the religion of choice. I find it disturbing that it is assumed on this thread, and generally in the USA that everyone follows Christian practice. God is neither male nor female.       ...

How do all you religious people feel when someone who is gay, attempts suicide because they've been told since they were little that it is a sin and they will burn in hell? Gay is not a choice. I just think it's very sad that our youth can't go to the their family with this, because they've been brainwashed into thinking they'll burn in hell. So they attempt suicide ou ...
