Occupy May Day Report Card: FAIL

Well, Occupy’s big May Day demonstration has come and gone. How did they do? Here’s my take; please add your own in comments.

Attendance : D+
For an event literally months in the making, the crowd turnout was weak coast to coast. I’m being a fair standard here; compared to other Occupy events from last fall, the numbers everywhere were smaller. Compared to other leftist events such as Wisconsin, the numbers were smaller.

Leftist Thuggery: A
While their numbers were small, the level of violent, crazy Black Bloc behavior got pretty intense. Especially in liberal west coast cities like Seattle and Oakland, the wanna-be ninja squads broke windows, spray painted and generally made a mess. They harassed cops with gusto, too -- throwing bottles, screaming obscenities and taunting the police to try to encourage a violent reaction from law enforcement.

Nationwide Strike : F
Occupy has claimed that this would be the first nationwide strike in the country’s history -- no school, no work, no shopping. You missed it too, right? A nation of over 300 million paid zero attention to the supposed spokespeople for the 99%.

Media Exposure : D
Look at headlines around the country and Occupy’s May Day barely registered. The broken glass to media coverage link was shockingly small. Big fail for the tattered remnants of the  Occupy media team, who were trumped by the Black Bloc’s now predicable rage against the machine.

Big Symbolic Events : D
No Golden Gate shutdown; the unions nixed it. They managed to make commuter traffic bad in New York late in the evening but that’s not exactly unusual. I give them points for effectively shutting down LAX, another move guaranteed to win them no fans. In San Francisco they caused the ferries to shut down but there was no visceral moment from that.

Political Impact : F
Those salad days of being praised by President Obama and Nancy Pelosi seem to be over. Of course, they would criticize the mob violence, but you didn’t hear a peep from the Democratic establishment yesterday. Even at liberal nutjob paradise DailyKos, the Kos Kommunity was eerily quiet about May Day.

Summary : FAIL
Sorry, far leftists -- Occupy has fizzled. You’re going to have to come up with some new tricks if you want to remain an even remotely relevant force in the public discourse. You had the media on your side, you had academia on your side...gosh, you had the President of the United States of America on your side -- and you blew it.

Will you go away now? Of course you won't. You'll find some new gimmick to try to sell the American people on leftist revolution.

We know it won't be easy but don’t worry, though. You’ll have lots to be angry about under the Romney Administration.

A local OWS is now having joint meetings with T-Party - Scratching Head

[ In Reply To ..]
The fact that people are getting together and questioning the way politics has always been run, I think is a good thing. I always have thought of OWS as a general movement, not a group like the Catholic church or something. I don't see where there can be a blanket critique of the group. The OWS has had most of their demonstrations in city parks and what not. These are the same areas where a lot of low-life type people hang around on an everyday basis, unfortuneately. As far as I can tell, most of the T-Party folks are glued to their Fox TV.

Why the slam on Fox watchers? - Only because OWS outed for the losers

[ In Reply To ..]
they are. Your pathetic attempt at insulting tea party members was just that. It had NOTHING to do with the failure of the OWS crackpots.

Exactly. They just hate it because Fox exposes - OWS for the thugs they are.nm

I personally do not watch Fox News. I don't like it and they've got their slant to it. I don't trust what they put out. On the same not I feel the same exact way about MSNBC and CNN. They all have a slant.

With that said people need to lay off insulting other posters. Does it really make you feel good to insult posters? That is a serious question. What joy are you getting out of this?

Look, just because you don't like the station, doesn't mean anything. There are different news stations because everyone has different likes. Some people like O'Reilly others like Matthews.

I do feel like Fox is misleading the viewers, but I do try and have some sort of human decency and don't come on board here for the intent of insulting others that don't believe the same way I do. NOBODY should!!!

Actually though, what you wrote is not the truth. Fox is one of the most trusted news sites in the world. I don't know why, because I don't trust them, but if you read papers from other countries they do trust Fox. The people who are the laughing stock are people who write stuff like what you just did. People like Chris Matthews and Olberman.

It would serve people well to keep their own hateful opinions about people they don't agree with to themselves.
Some on this board totally incapable - of posting without an insult

Fox has won news awards all of the country and beat out every other single news, cable and national, but you have people here that think by insulting someone, they are elevating their status. If MSNB, MM, CNN are all such reliable sources, why not sweeping the awards? Why is their readership/audience tanking? Pretty sick comment on a mentality that has to tear down someone else to elevate themselves by the namecalling and insults. Often wonder what it would be like to sign on here, especially after being off for an inconsistent work schedule, and actually find posts that have content and stick to the subject at hand....sans all the insuls, namecalling and vulgarities.

I was responding to the post directly above mine, which was critical of the post directly above that one. It was hard for me to understand the negativity of the post "some on this board...", as the post "have to comment on this" sounded so reasonable to me.

[ In Reply To ..]
So you believe that Fox is misleading its viewers yet you defend their choice to watch it? You are in favor of millions of people basing their voting behavior on false information? That's taking "freedom" a little too far. It is the voter's responsibility to seek actual factual information.
Woah doggie back at ya - anony2 - see message
[ In Reply To ..]
Not watching Fox is my personal choice. it is not my place to force my opinions/beliefs on other people. I said in my post "I personally do not watch Fox News. I don't like it and they've got their slant to it. I don't trust what they put out. On the same not I feel the same exact way about MSNBC and CNN. They all have a slant."

What that means is that is my opinion. And I can tell you I've been wrong on many issues before. Maybe what Fox puts out is the truth. But since I don't watch it I can't tell you for certain if they do not don't. The last time I watched it I didn't like it so I don't watch it. With that said, it is wrong for me or any other poster on this board to be insulting other posters because they have a difference of opinion and watch Fox.

There is a reason for different news stations. Not that one tells the truth and the other doesn't. I read the news on the internet and NONE of the news stations are giving us the news. But again, that is my opinion and nobody has the right to push their opinions on someone else, ridicule people come on the board for the sole intent of insulting them, calling them stupid (no matter how much they enjoy it). That is not their place and it needs to stop.

So, yes, I believe Fox is misleading its viewers. That is my opinion. Doesn't mean I'm right or wrong, its just my opinion, and yes I am in favor of millions of people having the freedom to watch Fox, MSNBC, CNN, C-span, read and research issues on their own and make their own best judgment on issues.

That's the whole basis for freedom. If you don't understand that then you need to educate yourself about freedom. It is not yours and anyone place to say, well I don't like Fox and I don't believe what they put out so I'm going to decide for you what you need to watch. I'll decide for you because I'm all knowing and you are too stupid to make your own informed decision after all if it doesn't agree with what I believe then you're wrong and I need to tell you how wrong and stupid you are.

Yes, it IS the citizens of this country (not just voter's) responsibility to seek actual factual information. They could be receiving some of that from Fox. I do remember the last time I watched Shep Smith was talking about events that happened around the world and they actually were happening. But citizens have the right to watch whatever shows that interest them - God help us maintain our sanity if we were forced to watch Mathews or Maddox. But that is what freedom is about. People having the choice to watch whatever they want to watch, research any newspaper or website they want. Read all the information, and analyze what they have learned and make the best informed decisions. Besides, I haven't seen any truthfulness or intelligence coming out of MSNBC and the people that listen to that station.

Freedom is a wonderful thing.

Whats the deal with the binocular focus on Occupy? Individuals energetic enough to participate in democracy, same as the ***. Can only think it is another scapegoat for those who need to feel better about themselves by looking down on someone else. Negativity is a drain and it is very aging. Seek something to be enthusiastic about and feel the energy grow.

When did rioting and vandolism become "participation in democracy?" As was mentioned, the vandalism was very bad on the west coast, in downtown Seattle as well as vandalism to the police captain's home. Sorry, but that does not make me enthusiastic about the movement.

The vandalizm was done by those OUTSIDE the - movement being opportunistic.

Ten Ways The Occupy Movement Changes EverythingNov 14, 2011
Before the Occupy Wall Street movement, there was little discussion of the outsized power of Wall Street and the diminishing fortunes of the middle class. In fact, it may represent the best hope in years that “we the people” will step up to take on the critical challenges of our tim ...
