Debit card fraud take my advice

Posted: May 10, 2013

I knew better from listening to Clark Howard, that it is risky to use debit cards online and in places like gas stations.  My checking account got hacked, 1500 dollars worth of charges.  I know it was from using the debit card online.  I won't know until Monday if the charges actually will go through, they are pending.  With a credit card you are covered with identify theft, with a debit card apparently not.  Take it from me, don't use your debit card online.  The bank says they will "fight the charges" but they are from overseas, Tokoyo and Great Britain.  If they did go through I'll probably end up fighting the bank.  I also plan to file a police report if the charges went through.  They closed the card of course and I will eventually close the account when everything clears and am watching it very closely.

I use American Express for all my purchases and if there is fraud, THEY fight your battle for you while taking the charges off your account.

I only ever use a debit card and have done so online - for years with no problems

I'm sorry you're having the issue you are having. I think it's not the best thing to use such a wide, sweeping generalization that all debit cards are bad online.

Quite frankly, it was not the debit card, it was wherever you were shopping that let the information slip. I do online shopping all the time and have used a debit card for years and have never had problems. I also use my debit card regularly at gas stations, again with no problems. I tend to frequent the same 2 or 3 places for gas. I also make sure that any online site I use has a secure application. I also monitor my bank account regularly to make sure there is no funny business going on.

I do hope you get your issues worked out and that there are no further repercussions for you.

It depends on your bank, apparently - sm

I have ALWAYS shopped online, but I only shop at places that I know are legitimate businesses and I have never been hacked. But, one time I gave my checking account information to a satellite company to pay my bill, automated check, not debit card, and they somehow fabricated more charges and charged my card a lot of money. They somehow linked me with another account, which wasn't mine and I didn't know the person and they said I owed the money.

When I contacted my bank, they said if I would have used my debit card, they could have stopped the charges, but since I used my checking account basically there was nothing I could do about it. I finally got the company to reverse the charges, but the bank stood firm on not helping. I stopped using the bank as well.

BJs computer system being hacked. This was before I monitored my account online, so did not know for 2 weeks but knew something was wrong as my receipts from the ATM were in the negative. Got my statement a few days later to see $800 in charges I did not make four states away....reported it, closed account, new card issued, new checking account, and all the money returned to us in 24-hours. As long as it is a VISA debit you will get your money back pronto. These people just hit it for about 4 charges....bought a gas, a TV at Walmart and a lot of pet supplies at PetsMart. I hope it being "international" does not make it harder for you to get the money back, but I really don't see why it should, maybe harder for the bank in terms of paperwork but with any luck you will get every penny back along with any bounce charges reversed (all ours were). I also use PayPal as much as I can online too as hopefully a safeguard. But, knock on wood, I use my debit for everything but as a charge, I watch my account closely now and so far so good.

Always at risk - MT

You are always at risk no matter what. There can be a dishonest person working anywhere you handle financial transactions. For instance, I'd be more worried about writing a check at the grocery store (a check has your account number, name, address, and phone number right on it), than I would be to use my debit card online...though thank you for sharing your experience. It's something people always need to be aware of, but it really can happen anywhere and to anyone.

Twice hacked. Here is what I did s/m - Quasi Modem

My checking account was hacked into twice when I used my debit card, once from an online purchase and once by using the debit card in a grocery store, and I am extremely careful using the card, but I still got hacked into 2 times. The bank of issue put the money back into my checking account both times, but it took 10 days, and I needed that stolen money for bills that were due.

Here is what I am doing now. First, I stopped using the debit card tied to my checking account. As I make online purchases at times and sometimes use the debit card for in-person shopping, I purchased a prepaid, re-loadable debit card, and I load small amounts of money on it when I am going to purchase on line, and I also keep a small amount of money in it "just in case" I need to use the card for in-person shopping/emergencies.

That way if someone hacks the card I am out only a small amount of money, because the card is not linked to any checking account/saving account/bank account. There is nothing more upsetting than to see one's checking account money wiped out when the money is very needed for bill paying.

Some of those prepaid re-loadable debit cards can be purchased for under under 5 dollars with no fees attached and a reload charge of under 5 dollars also and, while there is that small charge involved, it is worth it to me just for the peace of mind knowing that my checking account cannot be hacked into whenever I need to use a debit card.

Where is a good place to buy one of those - L&L

reloadable cards? That sounds like a good idea.

Have you ever had any trouble using PayPal?

My roomie uses a pre paid card from Wal Mart - She even has her paycheck deposited onto it

I think she has a $3 fee for each reload. She's had some financial troubles in the past and some banks won't take you if you have less than stellar credit, so this works quite well for her.

My fiance's SIL got my debit card and bank account folder when I was staying with the in-laws and ordered a bunch of diet patches. She put the card back exactly where it was in my purse and the folder back into my locked desk drawer exactly where I had it. I didn't find out until a month later when the free trial she ordered was up and was charged over $100 for diet patches. I am underweight, so I noticed immediately when I saw "diet" on my bank statement. After the whole mess with the bank she finally admitted that she had stolen my information because she was mad that I never watched her kids without charging her when she wanted to go out shopping by herself during the time I had to work, mind you. I didn't have any problems with the bank closing the card and issuing another. I now have a better place for my bank-related information and don't live anywhere near that crazy woman. I have never had any trouble shopping online before that incident and none since then. The bank manager is local, not overseas. I talked to him as soon as I saw the charge and had all my information changed that same day.

Debit Card Charges?Oct 05, 2011
There has been a lot on the news about banks starting to charge a monthly fee to use a debit card unless you carry a very large balance.  Will you voice your disapproval and move your accounts to another bank if your bank starts charging?  I think that bank boycotts could be very effective. I believe we should all support local small businesses, farmers' markets, buy made in America whenever possible, and avoid shopping at big chain stores and online mega websites.  Keep you ...

So Nervous About Target Debit CardApr 05, 2013
I was shopping at Target recently and a clerk told me about the Target debit card where you automatically get 5% off on purchases. I jumped on it, filled out an application, and now I'm a serious nervous wreck when I think about all the information I gave up, which was everything - name, address, phone number, social security number, driver's license and bank account number. What an idiot! I regret it a thousand times over now. I'm so paranoid about identify theft, I can' ...
