So nervous about Target debit card

Posted: Apr 5, 2013

I was shopping at Target recently and a clerk told me about the Target debit card where you automatically get 5% off on purchases. I jumped on it, filled out an application, and now I'm a serious nervous wreck when I think about all the information I gave up, which was everything - name, address, phone number, social security number, driver's license and bank account number. What an idiot! I regret it a thousand times over now. I'm so paranoid about identify theft, I can't believe I did such a stupid thing. Red flags even went off in my head when it asked for the SS#, but I still did it! I wonder if there's any way I can have all that deleted. I could change bank accounts, but the SS# and driver's license are permanent. ;

Have you never applied for a debit/credit card before? I'm not trying to sound rude, just curious. That's all standard information for them to ask because they would need to check your credit. It's Target, so I really wouldn't worry about it. I love, love, LOVE my Target Red Card - it's like instant coupons without the hassle of coupons! Relax and enjoy it! :)

love my target card also - love it

Plus, you get to use their coupons that they send out and a manufacturer coupon for that same item! And Target has great clearance items all the time. I already bought my grandson 6 pair of athletic shorts for 2.50 each about 3 weeks ago! Shorts on clearance in March! LOVE IT.

The only people I will give my SS to are my CPA who files my taxes and, of course, the IRS, which already has it. Even when I started with a new physician, they wanted it and I told them they did not need it--they had my insurance card, that was enough. Please, people, protect yourselves! A colleague of mine, a fellow MT, was the victim of identity theft and she spent several hours getting everything straightened out--after the thief had drained about 5K from her bank and made her mortgage payment bounce. By the time it was all over, she had spoken with the bank examiners, the local police and the FBI. I truly hope that nothing is amiss with this. And SHAME ON TARGET for asking for your SS number.

Well then - question for you

How do you then apply for a mortgage or credit card, or anything that needs a financial background check?

Best way to protect yourself from identity theft is to freeze your own ssn so no one can apply for credit under your ssn.

You need to go to each of the big 3 credit bureaus and request a freeze. The directions are on their respective websites. There may be a small fee, which varies by state, but it's a good investment in your personal protection.

The 3 agencies are: Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax.

If you need credit, like a car loan or a mortgage, ask your lender what report they pull so you can unfreeze your credit to allow your lender access.

Here's link for TransUnion..you will have to look3 up Equifax and Experian.

It's Target and you applied for a card. Your SSN is necessary in order to apply for any sort of card, debit or credit. Target goes through thousands of applications a month I'm sure. If you are so paranoid about identity theft, go to truecredit.com and pay $14.95 a month for credit protection and unlimited access to your credit report and FICO score. Just think of the millions of people who apply for credit every year...and there are maybe a fifth of those that are victims of identity theft. I wouldn't worry about it...really. Anytime you write a check, whether it's at your local restaurant or department store, that clerk has your bank account number, your address, your phone number, etc. Everytime you use your credit card or debit card, any clerk at any store has your account number. Every time you get an application in the mail to apply for a credit card, has gone through the workers at the credit card company, the post office, the postal worker delivering it, etc. Identity theft can happen anytime, anywhere.

Debit Card Charges?Oct 05, 2011
There has been a lot on the news about banks starting to charge a monthly fee to use a debit card unless you carry a very large balance.  Will you voice your disapproval and move your accounts to another bank if your bank starts charging?  I think that bank boycotts could be very effective. I believe we should all support local small businesses, farmers' markets, buy made in America whenever possible, and avoid shopping at big chain stores and online mega websites.  Keep you ...

Debit Card Fraud Take My AdviceMay 10, 2013
I knew better from listening to Clark Howard, that it is risky to use debit cards online and in places like gas stations.  My checking account got hacked, 1500 dollars worth of charges.  I know it was from using the debit card online.  I won't know until Monday if the charges actually will go through, they are pending.  With a credit card you are covered with identify theft, with a debit card apparently not.  Take it from me, don't use your debit card online. & ...

I Am A Nervous WreckFeb 20, 2012
My husband has a passive-aggressive personality, and he's often acted out through driving when he's annoyed/mad about something. He denies it, but I don't think I'm paranoid. I'm so sick of this and it's affecting how I feel about him overall. I am constantly on the lookout because he's gawking and not paying attention to what he's doing. Last week he nearly ran a red light, turned in front of another car that had the right of way, and swerv ...

Target Advertising MishapApr 05, 2013
Did anyone see the thing where Target had a plus-sized dress and the color was advertised as "manatee grey", which is an actual color advertised for other products, but because this was a plus-sized item, it was "offensive".  This world has gone crazy, I swear it has.  People claim offense to EVERYTHING and it seems someone always is apologizing!  Target actually APOLOGIZED, had a whole news write up on the apology.  They wasted news space, their time, etc., because the name ...

Avoid The Restrooms At Target. Better StillApr 21, 2016
It doesn't matter what position you take about transgender issues - it is NOT a good idea to allow people to choose whatever restroom they happen to prefer.  Target has NO way of knowing that the man who chooses the women's restroom is truly transgender, rather than being a predator with an entirely different purpose in mind. This is an unsafe world.  You NEED, and HAVE A RIGHT to know who is in the next stall. For this incredibly naive move, I've sent Target a message ...

In Shift, Feds Target Top Execs For Health Fraud'May 31, 2011
WASHINGTON -- It's getting personal now. In a shift still evolving, federal enforcers are targeting individual executives in health care fraud cases that used to be aimed at impersonal corporations. The new tactic is raising the anxiety level – and risks – for corporate honchos at drug companies, medical device manufacturers, nursing home chains and other major health care enterprises that deal with Medicare and Medicaid. Previously, if a company got caught, its lawy ...

Liberals Using Race CardMay 01, 2010
