Grandchildren playing outside.

Posted: Feb 2, 2015

My grandchildren are 8 and 4.  They live in the city, without much of a yard.  They do not go outside unsupervised when they are at home with their parents.  When they do go outside, it is usually to a nearby playground, park, etc.

We live in the country and have a 1-1/2 acre yard, with a swing set for them.  There are windows across the back of the house, and I can see them in the back yard.  I find that they mostly want to stay indoors and watch TV, or play video games.  When I ask them to go outside and play, they ask, "By our ourselves?"  I explained to them that it is safe here.  They say they are tired of swinging on the swing set and don't know what else to do when they go outside.  Hmmm.  Now what?  Do your children play outside?  What do they do?  Do I need to buy something else to put in the back yard for them?  I honestly did not know how to answer their question.  They have bikes here, but they are hard to ride on the grass, and we live on a gravel road.

Any ideas about what to have children actually do when they play outside?

;

Lots of stuff, if they are willing, they probably - don't have much imagination

for outdoor play, as they are always accompanied at home, so they look to their parents for direction as to what to do.

Water guns (warmer weather), balls, football? They can play house, treasure hunt. (Suppose you could create a treasure hunt?) RC cars (a little investment). Dig holes, fill holes--LOL. Toy cars, using ramps built from the aforementioned holes. Action figures and role-play with them. Tonka trucks, back hoes, earth movers. Younger one might still like sand box stuff, older one probably too old.

wagon to pull each other around.

I have one child that likes to go outside and collect stuff, rocks, leaves, sticks. The other child (who is older) would rather stay inside. My two are the same age range, both boys.

Sounds like a great place for the Easter Egg Hunt!

They need to exercise not only their bodies, - but their imaginations, as well! -sm

If it were me, I'd provide them with simple things that can be building blocks for using their imaginations to build things: Big cardboard boxes to make forts out of, or dollhouses, and crayons to color them with. Old sheets or blankets to make tents. A few wooden boards, an old tire or two, a jumprope or longer piece of rope. If there's someplace to dig, little shovels and pails come in handy, and they could build sand (or dirt) castles, roads, etc. Or, even allow them to plant their own little flower or veggie garden. Then they could build a scarecrow for it. Tonka trucks, plastic Breyer horses, action figures. Lots of paper, pencils and crayons for indoor or patio activity. Binoculars or a telescope. A smallish to medium-sized ball with lots of bounce (like kids play with at school), or a soccer ball. Horseshoes or miniature golf. A small animal such as a rabbit to take care of, or a dog to play with. If the bikes are mountain-bike types, with fat tires, they should be easy to ride on grass or gravel. On hot days, a simple thing like a rainbird sprinkler can give hours of fun. A big box full of dress-up stuff, like costumes, accessories, hats, etc. from Goodwill. They can invent their own superhero characters.

Seriously?? What did you do as a kid? They will enjoy the same things - they just need someone to show them once as it sounds like they have never done these things before.

Balls, frisbees, trucks/cars, blocks of wood & boards, hula hoops, magnifying glass and an old butter tub for bugs/leaves/etc., a metal detector (find a cheap one at a garage sale), small shovel & pail, a running hose, a sprinkler, a large empty cardboard box ...

ADDENDUM: All of the suggestions of the poster above me are EXCELLENT as well.

Also, a deck of cards for a rainy day (may require some help/instruction at first for them to learn games - my kids were astounded that you could play solitaire without a computer lol!)

Butterfly net and bug box. - momof2

Outdoors, my kids spent a lot of time when they were young catching butterflies and bugs. They had a couple of those bug boxes to keep them in. We would hunt for caterpillars and watch them make cocoons and hatch into butterflies. Indoors, they liked playing dress-up the best. We had old costumes as well as just any old clothes and capes that my sister made out of scrap fabric. Play-dough also kept them busy for a long time. You can make your own or buy the pre-made stuff. Model Magic is another kind of modeling clay that is great.

Easy seeds to plant, making dandelion curls and mud pies. Make an imaginary playhouse out of tree trunks, boxes, boards. Build stuff. Baseball and bat, kick ball. Get a dog!

Well - See Msg

You don't say what kind of climate you have, but if they're here while there's snow, there's always a snowman or snow fort. For the fall (if you have falling leaves), then can rake leaves into a big pile and play in them (away from the road, of course!). Summer weather? As the one poster said, bugs, etc. We used to catch fire flies in a small jar and punch holes in the top so they could "breathe."

They can collect wild flowers and dry them to make a dried flower arrangement.

They can learn to do cartwheels outdoors (or in if you have a large room in the house), jumping jacks, jumping rope, etc.

I'm not clear if they're just visiting once in a while or they are there semi-permanently, but it would be good for them to get to use their imaginations. It doesn't sound like they get much opportunity for that. Put away the video games and such. You can all play word games (no electronics) to sharpen their brains.

You don't have to invest a lot of money! Most people "back in the day" did not spend money on their kids to have fun---it's all right there just waiting to be used. On rainy days, you can bake with them, etc....

Toys outside... - same as inside

[ In Reply To ..]
I go to my local second-hand store on a regular basis year around and rummage through the toys - I take anything that they would typically play with in the house - Barbies, cars and trucks, animals, balls, even stuffed toys (you can throw them in the washing machine if they get dirty). These toys are strictly the "outside toys" and they have a toy box in the garden shed that they can go into and play with the stuff outside. I even have a few games in that box - we live in a state where we have 4 seasons, so I agree with sleds, etc.
When the grandkids come to my house, no video games allowed. They are allowed to bring their video games on long road trips and into the restaurant for when they are done eating if the adults want to visit over coffee. They know the rules, but we have had them close by for their entire lives too...
Enjoy them.!!!!

I will say, that age difference is significant--sm - anon

Part of the fun of playing outside when I was a kid was being able to play with other kids.

Some ideas though are things like making mud-pies, there are also bug jars with magnifying lenses on top that are cool, designate a place where they can dig holes and give them a hand spade or a big shovel for the 8 year old. Don't forget sidewalk chalk or bubbles. Help them start a bean teepee, plant some sunflowers, etc. There is also burying dolls, etc. I would definitely purchase some things specifically for outside though or you will find that spoons, etc., have been co-opted into digging tools.

You could also give them bird houses to paint and fill, build a bat box, and the list goes on and on.

I almost forgot, binoculars and --sm - anon

those wildlife identification books, there are ones for birds, reptiles, butterflies, etc.

Burying Dolls? - Yikes

[ In Reply To ..]
Having children bury dolls? That's a little morbid.

Well, there is nothing wrong with your imagination!--sm - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
I was not suggesting it as a funeral and giving them last rites but as kids we buried the Barbies the same way some would bury people at the beach (with the head above the sand), etc.
OH - Okay. See msg
[ In Reply To ..]
Oh, I can see burying up to their necks. Phew. Just don't cover the heads, and I'm okay with kids doing that....

That's what I thought!! OMG - then read the - explanation. :))

Looking For Ideas On Interacting With GrandchildrenJan 02, 2017
My grandson is 10, and a very smart young man. All he is into is computer games, iPad, etc. He will watch a movie on TV if it is something he is interested in, or go to the movies with us when he visits. Besides that, what do we do? He does not like board games (they are not on the computer). Card games do not last long either. Looking for ways to entertain him, interact with him when he visits that does not involve the computer. Any ideas? We live in a very small town so no museums, et ...

Trump Playing Us For Suckers?Apr 26, 2011
(CNN) -- The disappointing thing about most phonies is that they don't have staying power. Once they get caught, they give it up and skulk off into the night, never to be heard from again. Think of Rosie Ruiz, say, who pretended to win the Boston Marathon by sneaking out of a crowd of bystanders ahead of everybody in the last half-mile of the race. That's why I like Donald Trump so much. When it comes to pretending to run marathons, he never quits. For more than 20 years he' ...

Michael Steele To Barack Obama: Stop Playing Golf Until Oil Spill EndsJun 22, 2010
This is sooooo stoopid!!! What do they want the President to do? I guess the President needs to sit at his desk 24 hours/day. After all, he can only handle one catastrophe at a time. I think our President needs to move his office and staff to a boat and park it next to the gusher. Hopefully, that will make people happy. Playing The "religion Card."Aug 26, 2012
It is sad, but eventually the "religion card" will be played. I am not of the Mormon faith, but I personally know quite a few people who are. The Mormons (Latter Day Saints) I know are amazingly moral, charitable, kind, loving people. Their beliefs are no stranger than some of my own religious beliefs (evangilitical) probably seem to the unbeliever. They serve in the military for our freedoms, they teach in our schools, they are nurses and doctors in our hospitals. Why shouldn't they t ...
