Obamacare and employer issued insurance

Posted: Jan 14, 2014

Just curious.. did anyone's insurance that they got through their employer, not through the ACA web site, actually see any drastic changes to how their insurance worked? Any huge difference in cost?

My insurance did not change a bit, not even the cost  which is the first time that it has not gone up yearly in well, decades...

My daughter is having her employer insurance benefit meeting today and there were rumors of big changes with huge deductibles with no doctor visits covered at all until deductiables were paid. Just wanted to see if anyone experienced huge changes in how insurance worked.

Our insurance is the same. - United Healthcare

through my husband's employer.

Ours is almost totally the same, office visit now $20 instead of $15 - BC/BS

[ In Reply To ..]
However, you can still get it at $15 if you fill out a wellness plan form, where they then send you info on how to lower you bp, cholesterol, other risk factors.

Mine didn't change, but - sm

I have no co-pay and must pay a $2500 deductible until anything is covered. Things haven't changed much or at all for most people with employer-provided insurance; however, there are likely to be HUGE changes at the next enrollment. This is why people are so AGAINST THE ACA. It is really not the solution.

What kind of changes are expected next year?

My daughter just called me from her meeting. There were changes but nothing horrible and cost went down. Wellness visits and six sick visits a year are covered with $20 co-pay. After that she has to pay all costs until deductible is met. Her biweekly cost went down to $57 for her and the kids. I think thats great.. I pay $85 per pay period for just me. If she needed it, she could have gotten more coverage.. of course more expensive, but thankfully they are seldomly sick enough for a doctor visit. (Knock on wood).

That's sort of a loaded question... - sm

Without getting too political, remember Nancy Pelosi's statement about needing to pass the bill in order to find out what's in it? Well, that's sort of the mantra for now. No one really knows all the answers and it's sort of a wait and see issue, especially because the president seems to be making some (apparently) unconstitutional changes willy-nilly that are being challenged. Also, the sign up numbers are very disappointing to the administration and I've heard there may be some changes in penalties for those who do not sign up. I have a low vision issue and cannot do a lot of reading. I have to rely on what I hear from different sources like NPR, FOX, NBC, CNN, etc.

All those horrible things just around the corner. So far the world has not ended. Just saying. . .

And that is why we have insurance... - sm

...health insurance, car insurance, homeowner or renter insurance, etc., in case the sky does fall. Isn't that what responsible people do just in case?

So .. you have insurance.. Is it doing you any good? - I have the same and (see msg)

[ In Reply To ..]
mad as a cornered bulldog! Just got on this plan after my company was bought out. Seriously - I feel like I am paying for contracted rates. I have a discount plan instead of insurance.

It totally depends on your age and what state you live in. Older people in many states including mine .. are screwed, even with ACA plans.

No, I don't like the insurance I have. - I don't even want to go for labs

[ In Reply To ..]
because the cost of those alone will be over $200 and I've taken such a pay cut by my employer that $200 might as well be $2000.
My last labs (2 years ago) were $1700! - I wish they were $200.
[ In Reply To ..]
I had to put my last doctor's visit on the credit card and haven't gone back since!
Holy Moly! - If the left is right about the ACA,
[ In Reply To ..]
...the costs are supposed to be lower. I don't believe it, but that's what we've been told. As far as I'm aware, the only ones getting free medical care are the illegals.
Well I don't know about that (illegals?), but it was - out of reach for me before.
[ In Reply To ..]
I had the audacity to faint and scare the crap out of my husband, so I had the labs drawn and found out I was anemic. I could not believe it when I got the bill. I haven't had labs before, so I assumed everyone's labs were that expensive. So when I saw the figure of $200, I was kind of floored.

I have a hard time believing things would get WORSE with the ACA, but I guess we will all find out in due time. As it is, my plan seems to have stayed the same, at any rate.
I knew what labs cost, so I requested the minimum, - including only

a CMP, A1c and urinalysis. About 8 years ago, I had a bunch of tests to rule out celiac, including a colonoscopy, some immunoglobulin tests and other different antibody titers. Total cost was $10K out of pocket.
WHOA. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
10K is just INSANE! How is anyone supposed to figure out what is wrong with them, if it costs that much just to get a diagnosis?!? I'm so sorry.
I don't know. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
A lot of people say the ACA is the answer. I'm not sure of that yet, but I do know we need some type of insurance reform. And to everyone, I noticed some dislikes. Please don't think I was being rude because I mentioned illegals. I was just stating a fact that they don't have to pay for health care at this time.
who pays for health care - Effie
[ In Reply To ..]
It seems to me that poor people who don't work get easy access to health care which I don't begrudge them except that so often I have seen working friends and family do without because they make to much for free, but not enough to be able to AFFORD health care. I was hoping for a universal plan like they have in Europe or Canada. No one asked my opinion on it though when it was going through Congress, etc.
I have a mouthful to say about this, but I won't because - it will not be popular. nm

I prefer the Canadian system, myself. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm actually from Canada and came down with my parents to the US. Now that my folks are elderly, they talk a lot about Canada. But they can't handle the cold, so here in California they stay. I have considered moving back and almost did after being offered a job position there, but I stayed here because A: I love it here and B: I need to be near my parents now that they are older. However, I prefer the Canadian system and I find Canada in general to be a much "friendlier" country; not just the people on the street, but the way the government treats its citizens as well.
10K????!!! - Effie
[ In Reply To ..]
I would faint if I got a bill for 10K for labs... seriously, there would be no reviving me.
It was a total shock, but I learned a lesson, - ...which was to...
[ In Reply To ..]
...get an estimate for the cost before anything is done. If the doctor or staff have no answers, call the billing department of the hospital, clinic, office or whatever before consenting to anything. Expensive lesson to learn. I was mortified. The doctor never even had the courtesy to let me know that I did not have celiac. I think all he ever wanted was the money, although it was time for a colonoscopy.

That's the way our insurance was the last 2 places I worked - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
No co-pays, have to pay all everything up front, some things go toward the deductible and some not, but no office visits or anything paid until the deductible is reached, mine is single at 2000 I think. You have routine maintenance medical care paid at 100% but the catch is if they find anything like a polyp on a colonoscopy, it converts to therapeutic and not paid. You even have to pay for your own labs.

health insurance s/m - whine

I don't know how we are supposed to be able to afford health insurance, even through our employer, since being paid by the line and so few lines to be done these days, we can't be guaranteed to make enough each payday to pay for it. I have not signed up through my employer, though it's offered (thus not qualifying for the ACA assistance) because I don't think I can afford it. Funny how people say they're on a "fixed income" and that limits what they can pay. I wish I WERE on a fixed income, then I would know I was going to have enough to pay my bills. I suppose what they mean is, as long as I'm not disabled, I can always get an additional job or two, or three, or four...

affording it on pay - Effie

[ In Reply To ..]
I have to agree with you that having pay that fluctuates every two weeks can be a major pain. It makes budgeting hard. I HAVE to have insurance at my job, either through the hospital or through a spouse (I am a widow) to keep my job so I have no choice about having the insurance. Also, I am geting up there in age now and to be honest, the insurance is cheaper then my medicine would be every month, so I am glad to have it.

CBO Now Says 10 Mil Will Lose Employer Health Plans Under ObamaCareJan 28, 2015
The Congressional Budget Office now says ObamaCare will push 10 million off employer-based coverage, a tenfold increase from its initial projection. The "keep your plan" lie just gets bigger and bigger. The latest CBO report is supposed to be a big win for the Obama administration because the projected costs are 20% below what the CBO first projected in 2010. But the CBO report also shows that ObamaCare will be far more disruptive to the employer-based insurance market, while being far less ef ...

Obamacare allows people to wait until they get sick to sign up.
