Travel bans have been issued for certain Texans,

I've heard it all.

Good for Perry. - Californian

Texas doesn't mess around!

His task force hasn't met yet. Its first report isn't due - until December 1.

First meeting October 23, a week after all ebola patients have left Texas for greener pastures and health workers with direct contact with Patient 0 will be nearing the end of their monitoring and voluntary quarantine. This looks like messin' around to me, sort of like Perry's European lollygag.

So, we punish the caretakers... whats gonna happen if the caretakers get tired of being blamed, being unable to work, being banned from this and that.. and start refusing to care for the sick?? Hmm??? I say lets ban Perry...

You look at it as punishment. You have to be a liberal. - It's called being a leader.(sm)

Governor Trade Mission didn't issue the ban. Texas Department of - State Health Services did

[ In Reply To ..]
the day after the CDC issued their statement that health workers who came in contact with Thomas Duncan shouldn't be using public transportation or commercial travel. For Texas, it's a day late and a dollar short. That horse already left the barn.

Here's what Governor Ya'll-Sound-So-Darned-Smart's leadership looks like:

Ebola vs. Perry

Sunday,10/12

Ebola: Nina Pham, a nurse at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, is confirmed to have Ebola (the first transmission of the virus in the U.S.).

Perry: Perry flies to England.

Monday, 10/13

Ebola: Amber Vinson, a second nurse at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, traveled aboard a Frontier Airlines plane from Cleveland to Dallas despite complaining of a 99.5 fever. Though she alerted the CDC to her fever, the health agency cleared her to fly.

Perry: Governor Perry hosts an "Invest in Texas UK" gathering in London.

Tuesday, 10/14

Ebola: Amber Vinson, 29, is placed in isolation at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital over fears she may contracted Ebola.

Perry: The Republican meets with British Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, followed by a speech at the Royal United Services Institute. (That's when he gushed over how smart and refined British accents are).

Wednesday, 10/15

Ebola: The CDC confirms Vinson has Ebola early Wednesday. She is transferred from Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.

The CDC reveals Vinson’s commercial flight on Monday, setting off widespread panic.

President Obama cancels two fundraising trips to host a cabinet meeting on Ebola at the White House.

Perry: Kerry travels to Poland to visit Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, dinner in Warsaw.

Thursday, 10/16

Ebola: Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas admits to “mistakes” in how it handled Thomas Duncan's treatment.

Nina Pham, 26, is transferred from Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas to the National Institutes of Health clinical center in Bethesda, Maryland.

President Obama hosts an Oval Office meeting on the domestic Ebola response with: Sylvia Burwell, Secretary of Health and Human Services, Denis McDonough, White House Chief of Staff, Susan Rice, National Security Advisor, Lisa Monaco, Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism and Dr. Thomas Frieden, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Perry: Perry cuts short his European trip, skipping planned visits to Germany and Ukraine and travels back to Texas.

Governor Cajones decided to cut his big European "economic mission" short in response to national outrage and fear over the Texas botched ebola boondoggle.

Certain Texans are being asked not to travel and to "self-quarantine" - Dallas

[ In Reply To ..]
But Governor Felony Indictment Perry has ZERO authority to issue a travel ban on anyone. The federal government/CDC and Dallas officials are asking workers to sign papers saying they will avoid public transit and public places. But if they don’t sign, county leaders will issue court orders restricting their movement. “There hasn’t been a need to use extraordinary powers or put people under some sort of special law,” Dallas County Judge Jenkins said. They are asking certain Texans that came in direct contact with Mr. Duncan (Patient 0) or his bodily fluids (the lab workers at the hospital), one of which was on a cruise ship when they located her, to "self-quarantine" for 21 days after their last contact with Patient 0.

I live in Dallas, and my husband is a hands on healthcare worker, and since day 1 of Patient 0 being diagnosed, we have been kept informed of the situation and told repeatedly the facts about Ebola and how we should conduct ourselves. You can stay updated with facts versus panic: Facts Not Fear, they are saying.

http://www.cdc.gov/vhf/ebola/outbreaks/2014-west-africa/index.html

Anyone who came in contact with Nina Pham (Nurse 1) and Amber Vinson (Nurse 2) before they were quarantined did NOT come in contact with them when either of them were showing any outward symptoms of Ebola, and those people are being notified by the CDC regarding the facts about Ebola. Nurse 1 came in contact with 1 person and her dog Bentley. The person is self-monitoring and agreed to quarantine as a precaution. Nurse 1 and Nurse 2 were only showing a temperature and no other outward symptoms when they were diagnosed with Ebola. The big problem arose when Nurse 2 traveled to Cleveland and back to Dallas. The CDC is not 100% certain that she might not have been sick earlier (however, still showing no outward symptoms). So there is a LOT of "abundance of caution" issues arising from Nurse 2's travel. Some people are indeed freaking out and self-quarantining when they weren't in direct contact with a person showing symptoms of Ebola, when it's really not necessary, but to each his own and it sure couldn't hurt to be careful.

The facts are that Ebola is NOT an easy virus to catch. The only people to have contracted it have both come in direct contact with Patient 0. Both Nurse 1 and Nurse 2 had contact with Patient 0 when the hospital was using the original CDC protocol. The original CDC Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) protocol they followed left the hospital workers vulnerable, particularly the head PPE which left their necks exposed. It was only after the CDC showed up onsite that the CDC advised the hospital on different protocol with the hazmat head covering. By then, many hospital workers had been exposed already. Nurse 1 and Nurse 2 both had substantial direct contact with Patient 0 using the original protocol.

Meanwhile, Patient 0's family were in contact with him for several days when he was showing symptoms of the disease. They are being quarantined for 21 days. Not one of them has come down with Ebola. Their 21 days of quarantine are ending tomorrow. They are tracking 48 people to come in contact with Patient 0 who arrived in Dallas on Sept. 20, and all of them are soon to be released, as no one else has contracted Ebola. Patient 0 first began feeling sick on Sept. 24 and went to the emergency room of Texas Presbyterian Health Hospital late Sept. 25. After being released with antibiotics early on Sept. 26, he returned to the apartment until Sept. 28, the day an ambulance returned him to the hospital. He died Oct. 8.

Ebola is NOT easy to catch. The only 2 Americans to contract the disease in this country to date had extensive direct contact with Patient 0 from Liberia.

IMO, if someone, anyone, contracts this disease that has not had direct contact with a person showing outward symptoms of Ebola, then and only then should travel bans even be considered, which have been tried and proven ineffective and shown to actually cause more harm than good. There already are no direct commercial flights from these affected countries to the United States. People from these countries take multiple flights already to enter the US. Patient 0 traveled from Brussels to Dulles International Airport outside Washington, DC, before flying from Dulles to Dallas-Fort Worth.

http://thelead.blogs.cnn.com/2014/10/17/would-an-ebola-travel-ban-work/

They're telling us in Dallas that if you want to protect yourself from the virus for which you have the most risk, get a flu shot, as upwards of 36,000 people die in America of influenza, and around 200,000 people will be hospitalized.

Exactly.Governor Goodhair has nothing to do w/ a travel ban. - nm

Travel Bans Used With Good Success To Control Outbreaks Of Diseases In AnimalsOct 17, 2014
It's called a "stand-still" order, and it's one of the FIRST steps taken by agricultural authorities with the very first or even suspected discovery of a case of certain animal diseases.  No animals are allowed to be transported in or out of the "stand-still" order area.  Now, I'm quite sure that human epidemiologists are perfectly aware both of this practice and of its effectiveness.  So there's something else going on here when it comes to implementing trave ...
