Obama just took pen to paper and issued an EO to raise

'certain' Goverment contractors wages to $10.10/hour. Those contractors are people like dishwashers in government facilities, etc.

"Most of the people affected work in construction or services, holding jobs as nursing assistants, national park concession workers and food servers for the military, the White House said."

I am not sure whether this includes people like dishwashers in government facilities.

He did say dishwashers in military installations - Truthhurts

Guess we'll just have to look up the EO to be sure. I didn't hear nursing assistants, though. I was listening to him speak.

dishwashers - NK

My mother worked as a dishwasher in a nursing home for years. She would arrive at work every day to a huge stack of pots and pans with food stuck in them and dinnerware/flatware with dried food. For anyone who thinks being a dishwasher is a menial job not worthy of $10/hour, I'd suggest they try doing it in a commercial/military establishment.

This EO only covers FUTURE employees. - Truthhurts

White House officials concede that the executive order, which raises the hourly wage from $7.25 to $10.10, only applies to a small percentage of the more than 2 million federal contractors. But officials are hoping it generates momentum for Obama's proposal on Capitol Hill, particularly as both parties try to focus on issues like income inequality and economic mobility….
The executive order for federal contractors goes into effect next year but only applies to new contracts.
The White House said the order requires that employees who work for tips make at least $10.10 overall. It also prevents contract workers from being paid less than others if they have disabilities affecting their productivity.
A recent survey by the National Employment Law Project found that 77 percent of government contract employees who work in food service, retail or janitorial service earn less than $10 per hour. About 4 in 10 of those workers depend on public assistance programs such as food stamps and Medicaid, the study by the worker advocacy group found.
Federal workers like janitors, construction workers and dishwashers hired under new federal contracts would benefit from the new order

Dem candidates will be pro-raise minimum wage and Reps will say it's not a good idea. I think this is going to be the focal point of many Democratic campaigns, and will be very popular with hard working Americans all over the country.

and he was saying, speaking to conservatives, of course, who want Obama and all the other liberals to be run out of town on a rail, or something similar, (paraphrasing) "How are you going to do it? If I took money away from people you hate, and gave it to you, and announced everyday that I was going to take more away from the people you hate and give you some more, you'd like me too." I hope someone came up with a good answer. That's hard to beat.

Sums up Obama twisted logice for sure - What a waste of humanity O is

Here's the problem with that logic - sm

Multibillion corporations, the 1%, the top are the ones "we hate" and want to take money from, so people who work full-time jobs at minimum wage don't have to rely on the government to pick up the slack.

Really, how much money IS enough?

Conservatives blame people for having to rely on food stamps, but these billionaires hold onto their money and let the taxpayers support minimum wage workers instead of the them, the billion-dollar corporations, doing what's right and paying their employees a living wage. Low-paid minimum wage workers are the backbone of their companies. MT is a good example of this too.

And let's be fair. Some people aren't college material. Maybe not motivated, not smart enough, etc., but they are working. They deserve to earn a living wage. And if they all went to college and got better jobs, who would stock the shelves anyhow? What if we went into a store and there was no one there? Oh... there wouldn't be a store. These people are important to the corporation and deserve the dignity of being able to provide for their families without government assistance.

The logical scenario would be the billionaires do what's right and stop putting the burden on the taxpayers to pay for foodstamps and other gov assistance. To do otherwise is just plain welfare for the top 1%, the takers, the ones we "hate," with good reason.

In this scenario Mr Limbaugh wants you to believe - they are taking money from YOU

[ In Reply To ..]
When in reality, since most of us MTs are on the bottom of the barrel, they are not taking money from you and giving it to these implied lowlifes, what is happening when they raise the minimum wage is that people like US are the ones benefiting.

The idea that the minimum wage is "taking" from some and "giving" to others (not worthy) is ridiculous. What about giving the oil companies subsidies and agribusiness, the military? Where is that money coming from? It's a lot more than raising the minimum wage a couple of dollars.

This is how that guy gets people who make very little money to become "dittoheads" - as long as there is someone lower than you grasping to get what is rightfully yours (what? You barely would have more than those on minimum wage, many of us are close to if not on minimum wage) you will believe him.

The sad fact is the poor people on the minimum wage who are supposedly taking from us by this scenario are really just US. Answer me why we have to suffer with terrible pay and people like this shyster make millions (supposedly working hard) and just don't want you to get that extra dollar or two an hour? And you fight that battle for them, really?

Tell me exactly who the money is coming from for - anything Mr. O spends $$ on (sm)

I don't need a lot of spin and interpretation. I just want to know where the money is coming from. PERIOD.

and we didn't like it then either. Please don't assume that all republicans are in 100% agreement with everything GW did.

You do have to admit, however, that if we're going to question money spent by Bush, Clinton, et al, there has to be question of spending by Obama, especially considering no matter who is doing the spending, it is our money.
You are correct, but I think it's important to examine what the money is being - spent on
[ In Reply To ..]
I so wish we could stipulate that just because we are dems or reps we do not ascribe to every policy and action of our party. That would enhance our discussions here exponentially.

But regarding spending of money, I prefer the money spent stay in the country (stimulus, job creation, incentives not to outsource overseas) rather than subsidies to oil companies (yeah, I know, some are in the country, but they are too rich to get subsidies) and starting wars. But I'm thinking starting wars will be a nonissue in the future. I'm hoping anyhow.
I do hope you're right about the wars. - ZvilleMT
[ In Reply To ..]
And I agree with you about the money staying here. I'm not an isolationist by any means, but there needs to be some way to cut the money being sent to other countries when there are people here without jobs and our infrastructure is falling apart. I also agree with you about the corporate welfare - not just of oil companies, but all of them.

Maybe in the future we could all try not to assume that because of our party affiliation or beliefs that we agree with those that are the "leaders" of that party. Either that or we could start out each post with "I'm a pub and I didn't agree with Bush" or "I'm a dem and I don't agree with everything Obama is doing." LOL!!! ;)

And precisely why you think President Obama - should be questioned on everything
[ In Reply To ..]
And President Bush questioned on nothing is why.

It is not "hijacked" - it is pointing out that questioning President Obama on things like "spending money" - which no president does alone, anyway, and NOT EVER having questioned President Bush for the same thing represents hypocrisy.

Why do conservatives care so much where the money is coming from when a Democrat (and particularly this Democrat, who is so very easy to discredit to their base) is in office and care not a whit when a Republican is in office.

So no, not hijacked, I do not believe anyone can answer where the money comes from, maybe an economist, but it is no different than all the money any president ever spent.
Answers to your questions... - sm

1. Bush is no longer president.

2. The money comes from our tax dollars.

3. The post WAS hijacked because the original thread was about BO's wielding of his mighty pen to raise the federal minimum wage without congressional approval.

Regarding raising minimum wage for some federal employees, why he did it, and the bigger picture:

When people have to rely on food stamps because their employer pays them a little over 7 dollars an hour, that comes from our tax dollars. I would assume tax dollars paying some federal workers 10.10 pales in comparison to how many tax dollars are paying for food stamps to pick up the slack for billion dollar corporations who get away with paying full-time hard-working people minimum wage.

Here's the big picture. What Obama did is significant because it raised the issue in relation to what I said above. It's not going to impact tax payer dollars in a hugely significant way. What it does is bring the issue to a national level. For all the Democratic candidates to run on and for all the Republican candidates to try to explain to people who are just making ends meet why raising the minimum wage is a bad thing. I think the Dems will prevail overwhelmingly on this and that is precisely why Obama leaked the MW for Fed employes before the SOTU. This will be the platform for the Dems.

That's what Reps need to be afraid of, not that Fed MW increases is going to affect tax payers. You have to look at the big picture.
You're right. I just edited my post. - TY. (NM)
