President Barack Obama shakes hands with Cuban President Raul Castro.

Editor’s Note — An earlier version of this story incorrectly said that President Barack Obama, on his way to the rostrum to speak at the memorial for Nelson Mandela on Tuesday, shook the hand of President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe.

Briefly laying aside differences hardened over decades, President Barack Obama on Tuesday shook the hand of the president of Cuba at the memorial service for Nelson Mandela.

The handshake appeared to be the first between American and Cuban presidents since 2000, when Bill Clinton and Fidel Castro greeted each other at a United Nations luncheon in New York, and only the second since 1959, when Castro took power.

It was Fidel Castro’s brother, Raul, named president of Cuba in 2008, who shook Obama’s hand on Tuesday.

Big deal. Was he supposed to be rude and ignore him? Proper decorum for - civilized people

is to recognize other heads of state.

And regarding the bow, Castro looks in the picture to be either very short or sitting or something. It looks like Obama was just bending over to speak to him.

I watched a lot of the memorial service this morning. It was extremely noisy so having to get close to communicate would seem logical.

No, a long time ago this would not happen, no - matter what party you belonged to.

We have diminished in self respect here and in importance. It's a different world.

But it's not a long time ago. He was just displaying good manners and civility. - It's no big deal

[ In Reply To ..]
I doubt a simple handshake will have an impact on the future of our country. This is way down low on the list things we should be worrying about right now.

If he'd have passed him by, that would have been quite awkward and would have drawn just as much criticism, I'm sure.

It was just an unplanned, impromptu simple handshake, nothing more.

It really is no big deal.
These are signs to the rest of the world, like the phone call - he made to Hasan Rouhani in Sept.

No president would do that before him.

In 2009 when he met Israel’s prime minister for the first time, Benjamin Netanyahu was made to enter the White House through a side door and into a meeting room where press cameras were not allowed. In September last year, when Netanyahu visited New York and Washington, the president refused to see him, the first time a US president refused to meet a visiting Israeli prime minister.

Each of these gestures conveyed a powerful message to the world leader and to the world. Small gestures carry great meaning, that's the way the world really works.

Do you dismiss the fact that Richard Nixon shook hands with Mao? How about John McCain shaking hands with Qadafi? Try Google and see who the Bushes shook hands with.
This is not the same thing, but it's a fair question. - No president previously would

There is nothing about this ceremony that would cause the U.S. to diminish in self-respect or importance. Quite the contrary, in fact. It's a pity so many Americans don't understand this.

[ In Reply To ..]
It was done a few years ago. Bill Clinton shook hands with Fidel Castro and I am pretty sure that JFK shook hands with Kruschev, Reagan probably shook hands with Gorbachev (remember when Russia was our mortal enemy?), heck, Roosevelt probably shook hands with Hirohito at some point. I don't think Obama was bowing, I think he was trying to hear. Look at the picture and notice how others are leaning in to listen. This was an occasion when shaking hands was appropriate - Obama probably also shook a lot of other hands. Much ado about nothing. It would have been far worse to attend a funeral where heads of state were present and snub people.
Not quite the same thing. Those activities did not - cause the US to diminish in stature,
[ In Reply To ..]
and I don't recall them bowing. I do recall Clinton letting the then head of China go to the NYSE and ring the opening bell. What a joke! Reagan and Gorbachev were negotiating.

You see how the world has changed? Did you know Gorbachev was a closet Christian?
The US is NOT diminished in stature. - sm

No thinking, reasonable person believes that Obama's presence or show of respect diminishes the U.S. in any way, shape, or form.
Comparing Obama to Hitler diminishes the U.S. in stature - sm

Americans whining when Obama treats other leaders with respect diminishes the U.S. in stature. Americans whining that Obama and three other living presidents should not attend Mandela's service diminishes the U.S. in stature.
I agree. However, if Obama had (sm) - Libby

No matter what Obama does, those who detest him will find him at fault.
We have done it. Nixon. Mao. 1972. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Communist China was pretty darn oppressive. Regardless, it was widely viewed as diplomatically intelligent for Nixon to meet with Chairman Mao in 1972, when the U.S. was considered a foe of China.

I heard an interesting phone call yesterday from a South African. He was talking about how people think Mandela went to prison because of his political views and because he was black, but he went to prison for 196 acts of terrorism. He and others were caught by the police with 48,000 Soviet-made anti-personnel mines and 210,000 hand grenades.

Look up Winnie Mandela and the ANC.

He was also offered every year to get out of prison if he would only denounce terrorism and he would not.

It's a different world indeed.

It's an upside down world. People don't think - communism is bad, and

capitalism is evil.

You mean like when conservatives here praise - Howard Zinn and Putin?

[ In Reply To ..]
I've seen conservatives here talk about the wisdon of Matt Damon reading Howard Zinn and how Putin saved the planet. So yeah, I guess communism is okay now, but only if they think it's somehow a slam to Obama. And that's weird.

Operating through a cell structure, the MK agreed to acts of sabotage to exert maximum pressure on the government with minimum casualties, bombing military installations, power plants, telephone lines and transport links at night, when civilians were not present. Mandela himself stated that they chose sabotage not only because it was the least harmful action, but also "because it did not involve loss of life [and] it offered the best hope for reconciliation among the races afterward." He noted that "strict instructions were given to members of MK that we would countenance no loss of life", but should these tactics fail, MK would resort to "guerilla warfare and terrorism".
