Peripheral neuropathy, my hands.

Posted: Sep 22, 2014

Hi guys,  I have had peripheral neuropathy from diabetes for a number of years.  Started in my hands to the point where I almost changed careers, but that went away and it started in my feet.  About that time, I got to sign up as a test subject for Lyrica for PN, luckily I was one of the subjects that got the medicine right off.  Noticed a change during the first few days.  Love the stuff.

Anyway, I have started to lose feeling in my hands altogether.  It is starting in my little fingers, i.e. typing a's and z's mostly.  I find myself missing those letters altogether and instead of hitting the "Z" key I end up hitting the key below that brings up the sidebar of programs.  What a pain.

Any suggestions??

Thanks for any/all help!

Perhaps try some yoga if you are not in too bad of shape. Be gentle so you do not hurt yourself. I have an old whiplash that periodically I get neck pain and my arms seem to be a little numb, sometimes finger pain. Getting exercise, walking, stretching out while warm really helps me. Yoga stretches, I think one is downward facing dog and then cat stretch are very good. I would have someone tell you the proper way to do them if you are not an exerciser. My husband thinks he is copying my stretches but he does them all wrong.

feelin' ya pain - think my wrist is broken

Hello, ol' timer; I'm an old timer too, and I am truly feeling your pain. About 10 years ago, an orthopedic surgeon told me I had to stop typing, period. No particular explanation really, just that I complained of severe pain, and he tried cortisone injections which didn't work and I think he knew they wouldn't work--oh would that I could not work anymore...So, 10 years later, I've learned to do just what I need to do, without deviating too much from the literal 'same keys I always use' to avoid unbearable pain- but lately, have had to use the 'mouse' to a great degree. Well, right wrist is broken, I think, a stress fracture. The pain is excruciating and now the thing is popping and snapping, etc. I hope that you are in the position to stop working, get disability or just...retire! My guess is that 'resting' your poor hands for the rest of their lives may be the only true relief...Currently I'm using a store-bought Ace 'wrist saver' with the metal (I guess) splint in side the wrap. Does it work? Not really! :) Best of luck and good wishes to you, OT!

Doctor checkups - sm

If I am late taking my BP and thyroid meds, I start to get tingling pain in my hands and arms. My doc makes me come in every year for a new prescription. Just in case your doc just renews your prescriptions, you might want to schedule a checkup.

Thanks for the feedback. Had CTR on both hands back in the mid '80s, good old IBM selectric days. And it really helped.

Not so much pain, just numb. Up-to-date on medications. thanks.

I have thought about some yoga and a studio has opened reasonably close by, but have lost a lot of my agility over the years.

Thanks again to all for the feedback!

Peripheral NeuropathySep 28, 2012
My spinal stenosis has progressed to the point that I have severe peripheral neuropathy of both feet with accompanying pain. It can be very painful for me to operate the foot pedal, and just about impossible to have to keep tapping it for lousy dictators. My doc started me on 25 mg amitriptyline as it is known to reduce the nerve pain and it has actually helped. It also helps with being able to sleep through the night. Still, with the lousy dictators I'm in pain. Good dictators and ...

Neuropathy & No Med Ins.Jun 03, 2013
I have severe bilateral foot neuropathy which I believe is from spinal stenosis.  A neurologist told me that is probably the cause on an ER visit (not related to neuropathy).   My feet sometimes burn so badly in the evenings I have to dip socks in cold water, put them on my feet with a fan on them to cool the feet down, or put them on ice. The pain is sharp, stabbing, burning but only lasts a few second at a time, striking about once a minute. It is excruciating to have to transcr ...

Neuropathy And Elbow Problem?Jan 19, 2012
Hi!  I was wondering if anybody out there has problems with neuropathy or elbow problems related to typing?  My right elbow has been acting up for about 6 months now (lateral epicondyle area), but now my whole arm is aching with it.  I have also been getting numbness and tingling in both hands, but also get it into my legs as well, and have some sciatica-type problems on the left side for the past 3-4 months.  Could this be related to sitting and computer work (although I do ...

I am terrified...I have steroid-induced DM and have just been on insulin for about a week.  Yesterday morning I woke up nearly paralyzed in pain from my knee area down.  The pain was so intense at first I didn't even realize where it started from and had to figure it out.  My feet, thighs, knees, calves, etc., was in the most twisting, squeezing, burning pain I've ever experienced.  I took an OxyContin plus 2 Norcos and it still didn't subside for at least 2 h ...

I really don't know what Trump's sniffling was about, but all I could think about was how I want to hand the docs a tissue and tell them to go blow their nose when they are dictating and snorting.   Maybe he has pneumonia and snorts coke? When Clinton got into her subject, she was really good.  It is too bad she is not more comfortable when speaking, then she would be phenomenal.    Wow, Trump turned into a babbling fool that last half.    ...

Shaking HandsMay 24, 2010
This is a silly pet peeve of mine.  First let me say that I don't like the "turn around and greet your neighbor" in church where everyone shakes hands.  Immediately afterwards I have a strong urge to wash my hands, and try to remember to bring the antiseptic wipes.   It is not healthy, but here's my main issue (As Jane Velez-Mitchell would say)   I always thought that women should not shake hands.  To me it is just a manly thing to do, and just t ...

Time to break the silence on Saturday's GOP debate.  This article was published in the Telegraph.  IMO, GOP foreign policy debate sank to slightly below the national disgrace level.  Republican hopefuls would go to war with Iran Mitt Romney, the favourite to clinch the party's candidacy, said that he would direct US forces to pre-emptively strike Iran's nuclear facilities if "crippling sanctions" failed to block their ambitions. When you are talking with your family and freinds do you talk with your hands (move them around to illustrate what you are saying).  My DH does.  In fact I don't think he can't, and there are times where he'll say to me "are you watching" and he wants me to watch his hands.  Sometimes I have to stop myself from laughing.    I on the other hand do NOT talk with my hands.  I tried it once and it felt very unatural.  On top of that DH asked me wha ...

HE is somewhat okay as long as he is taking the Oxycodone, once that wears off he is back to his almost immobile state.
