Shaking hands

Posted: May 24, 2010

This is a silly pet peeve of mine.  First let me say that I don't like the "turn around and greet your neighbor" in church where everyone shakes hands.  Immediately afterwards I have a strong urge to wash my hands, and try to remember to bring the antiseptic wipes.   It is not healthy, but here's my main issue (As Jane Velez-Mitchell would say)   I always thought that women should not shake hands.  To me it is just a manly thing to do, and just turns me off when I see a woman shaking hands.  I just saw two women shaking hands on TV and it got me again!!   LOL!

Like I said, a silly pet peeve of mine.  Now I gotta get busy and get on with my day.  I have always been curious if other women see it this way.

Have a great day.  I give you no more than a nod of my head!

I don't have a problem shaking hands with women that I meet socially or in a business setting, but I don't like doing it at church every Sunday. I even thought about asking that this practice be at least suspended during flu season.

I want to wash my hands immediately afterwards too! lol

Good idea! - Not for me

[ In Reply To ..]
I have often wondered, with all we hear in the news during flu season regarding the importance of covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze, and washing hands that churches don't do away with this practice. I have heard more than one person say they don't approve. I don't know why it bothers me to see a woman shake hands. LOL! My sister and I have to laugh when it happens to us if we are introduced to someone and they reach for my hand! I see her starting to grin and have to try to keep from laughing. Since I was young I don't like it! Anyhow. . Thanks for the comments everyone and remember those WIPES!

I don't go to church (yes I'm proud to say that). In the past I went to a couple churches where everyone was like that "turn around and meet your neighbor". Sorry but that just creeped me out. I am not there to meet everyone in church, I'm there to hear the gospel. I grew up in a methodist church where we heard the minister talk, then after church service if you wanted to socialize there was coffee in the basement and that is where people would greet each other. But those were in the times where women didn't shake hands AND I grew up wearing gloves to church (oh, does that age me?)

I'm with you though. I don't like seeing women shake hands. It does look very manly. Take me back to the days when a ladies hand was extended the gentleman kissed the back of it. But now adays if you don't shake hands you are perceived as being rude.

Even worse - drinking from a communal cup - LK

[ In Reply To ..]
I attended a Catholic funeral at the height of the H1N1 flu scare, and it made me cringe to watch the long lines of people drinking from the SAME communion cup. The priest would give it a little wipe with a cloth after each person, but used the same cloth every time! Then the next person would put their mouth on it. I really had a hard time watching that.

Thanks so much for posting this. I thought I was alone in hating that. - :-) SM

...although for different reasons. I have no problem with the concept of shaking hands (men/women, men/men, women/women, whatever), but I have just always been irked by the forced nature of the handshake in church. I feel it should come from the heart and not be directed by someone else. I always thought I was the only one made uncomfortable by that.

I don't mind it but it makes my DH crazy. When it was flu season, we didn't do it...just gave a Hey, nice to see you.

Trying to figure out why this was moved to the faith board?????

Shaking hands - Not for me

[ In Reply To ..]
I am glad I posted this. Maybe we should all politely just tell people we would rather not shake hands, and address this issue in church. Not only do you touch one person's hand, but many. It's like handling money. You can only imagine what's on it. Thanks to all. I thought the post was deleted. Glad it was not.

Or shaking the groom's hand after the wedding. Oh and when a man becomes a father, for God's sake don't shake hands then! You might get cooties.

Do people really sit around and think about this crap?

I've got a shocking revelation for everyone. I am a chronic nailbiter and I shake hands at church every Sunday and I have yet to become sick with the flu, scabies, leprosy, or whatever else you're afraid of.

Is this the kind of society we have become? Closed off, unemotional, germophobes?

Go find a bubble to live in while the rest of us have fun.
Relax - Not for me
[ In Reply To ..]
You sound very uptight to be having much fun. For heavens sake, did you ever stop to realize that maybe YOU aren't getting sick, but you might possibly cause someone else to become ill whose resistance is low? Why do some people have to react so negatively to simple conversation? When my friend dropped food off at my house when I was ill I got out of bed and went downstairs and cleaned the door and railing to the stairs. . . not to protect me, but to protect her. It's being street smart, not unfriendly.
I'm sorry, but you don't sound very relaxed, decontaminating - BornAgainMT

You amaze me - Not for me
[ In Reply To ..]
And just what would your theory be on how germs are spread? Have you never watched a news cast or the Today Show when dozens of doctors have stressed wash, wash, wash your hands? Have you ever had a sore throat or cold? Do you know that all you need is to touch the corner of your eye or mouth and you have contracted the flu or a bad cold and sore throat? Where do you live?? On the escalator at a mall they tested for germs and found E. coli on it where everyone holds on. I am a freak because I am clean enough and aware enough to wash my hands? You are definitely a rare breed. You can touch he filthy doors in public where you can actually see the gunk and fingerprints on the glass and then scratch your eye. Then again, you have never been sick so why would you care? You call yourself born again. You just want to argue. I'm out, toots.
And do you carry....sm - CBS

a bottle of antibacterial soap everywhere you go or a wash basin? I bet you look pretty silly. People like you truly amaze me, to think that constant hand washing and antibacterial soaps are going to protect you. A strong immune system does the trick and you make it strong by eating a healthy diet. Those of us who do are not so paranoid. You should give it a try. I have never had the flu or a cold and I've been around plenty of years-57 to be exact-to catch a bug. There is no argument. Those are just the facts. We are a sickly, fat country populated with people who rely on drugs, vitamins, soap and vaccines to keep themselves healthy instead of eating right and exercising. People like you just amaze me. ;)
Just so you know - Not for me

This is my last post on this board. I am so sick of people deliberately bashing and striking out at total strangers and at the same time professing to have faith in God. It is bad enough to find it on the other boards, but a disgrace to find it on this one. Have a good day and keep the faith . . the real kind.
Bashing??? - CBS

I hardly think that stating opinions about paranoia about "germs" is bashing. Someone is really sensitive. ;)
It's not the single incident, but the pattern, that is the problem. - SM
[ In Reply To ..]
It's natural to expect disagreements on any subject, but when the same people are quick to jump in on just about every subject, telling the poster before them that they don't know what they're talking about (or any variation on that theme), then it's not a matter of a simple disagreement any longer, but rather a pattern of bullying and abuse.
Making an exception - Not for me
[ In Reply To ..]
I was not going to post again, and I surely will not on this board any longer, but I wanted to say I appreciate your comment. That is the whole point. She says she was just giving an opinion and that I am too sensitive. My initial post was actually mainly humorous. Another girl brought up the fact that she thinks churches should stop hand shaking, especially in the flu season. The subject just went from there. Is it an "opinion" to refer to me as looking silly carrying a wash basin and antibacterial soap with me everywhere I go, and calling me paranoid, or is it just rude and nasty? God Lord, with all the problems in this country today, and with birds unable to walk or fly because they are drenched in oil is it reasonable by any means to fight over whether one should wash her hands? I simply am at a loss for words. The taste of human beings is sticking in my throat and making me physically ill. Thank you again.
Trust me, you were the sane one in this conversation. - Ignore the mosquitoes NM

Really...so silly...sm - CBS
[ In Reply To ..]
There's so many germs and bacteria and viruses out there. If a person never shook hands, they would still be susceptible. I don't live in a bubble. I take good care of myself by eating right and exercising and I sure as heck don't worry about what might be lurking out there because there's a ton of stuff. A strong immune system will keep the bugs at bay. If you don't have one because you're not willing to work at it, I suggest iron-clad bubbles...you're going to need one. LOL

When I first read it I didn't think it had anything to do with just shaking hands, but more of a pet peeve you have with your church. That's why I wondered why it was posted on the gab board.

Maybe if you had phrased it as to what is everyone's pet peeve, and then just said shaking hands to meet your neighbor, but most of the replies were about church.

Either way it was a good post and I was interested to see what people had to say. I really don't like shaking hands myself. It's very manly to me. I also don't like guys who sit with their legs crossed like ladies. I think there is some gender confusion going on these days. LOL.
Thank you - Not for me
[ In Reply To ..]
Finally someone gets it. I even said my MAIN ISSUE (like Jane Velez-Mitchell) was the fact that I think it is manly.I said it with a humerous lilt, but thus a fight erupts. The other part about shaking hands in church was just thrown in because frankly I don't like shaking hands with many people. Things sure do get blown out of shape on this board. Everything is an argument. Sorry I brought it up.

I like shaking hands - It does not bother

[ In Reply To ..]
me at all. I like a nice, firm handshake and can't stand a limp, fishy grip. I also think it's fine for women to shake hands and think there is nothing unfeminine about it.

I like a hug as a greeting also.
