VR bothering my hands

Is anyone else doing VR beginning to have problems with your hands? I started VR about 6 months ago, have been doing transcription for 30 years, but the last month my right hand and up my inner arm from wrist to elbow has been absolutely killing me, painful all the time and now I cannot even hardly hold a pen and write without causing more pain. Went to the doctor today and he says it is from the repetitive motion, stretching from the main keyboard to the up/down arrow keys and command keys, tells me there is really nothing that can be done short of changing professions, does anyone have any ideas? I have tried gloves, braces, etc and they don't seem to make any difference.

[ In Reply To ..]Try doing Yoga, especially the positions where you stretch your arms and hands. A very good beginner's DVD is Essential Yoga by Denise Austin. It works! I do it every day and have been transcribing a long time also. Good Luck.

[ In Reply To ..]I have been doing this job for a little over 7 years, I worked at a property title place entering abstract information before that, and was a legal transcriptionist before that. I had trouble with ulnar nerve entrapment when I worked at the law office, until I retrained myself not to lean on my elbows so much, and that got better. But after doing VR and having to do motions I am not used to doing all day, yes, my hands hurt. I don't think it is so much the repetitive movement, as I can straight type all day without any problem, its the having to move all over the keyboard now, that is bothering me.

[ In Reply To ..]So sorry to hear about your hand problems. I have a Goldtouch keyboard which is basically a 2-piece keyboard. I have trained myself not to strain my hands by reaching my fingers into awkward positions. I move my whole hand to the keys I need, then back. To help orient my fingers, I mark some of the keys with a big blob of fingernail polish that I can immediately feel, so I know where I am on the keyboard. On my keyboard, also, there are additional backspace and delete keys on the left side, next to the tab button, and I use those instead of the right pinky. At first everything felt confusing like braille, but I got used to it, and it has made a lot of difference. Hope this helps!

[ In Reply To ..]I'm talking Dragon ... you can get by with the least expensive product ... it's either the Standard or Preferred version. You can issue all commands via voice. For example, instead of moving your hand to the cursor keys you can simply say, "Go up 3 lines" ... "Move to end of line" ... and so forth.
I've got both carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel syndrome, and VR made it possible for me to continue transcribing.

[ In Reply To ..]I have terrible pains in my hands and they are working this up as I have swelling too, but my doctor gave me Voltaren gel to use since I can not take anti-inflammatories due to severe erosions in my esophagus from GERD. It does help. I also ice my hands and some days use heat, which ever one feels better that particular day. If you can not get the prescription Voltaren gel from you doc and can take anti-inflammatories, try Aleve or try the pain relief creams like Icy Hot or Ben Gay, etc. Hope this helps. Believe me, I feel your pain, every day. What is it you do with VR, as I am assumming this is voice recognition. How does it pay compared to straight out typing and how does it work?
