Hey friends, I have a slightly worrisome growing dilemma. My 14yo son has always been somewhat over-zealous about hand washing, but of late it has become quite a problem. I remember telling my friends about this a couple of years ago, but now the repercussions have become severe. He washes his hands wayyyy too often. Just in the time after school and before bed it's at least 12 to 15 times, with more during the day at school. I try to buy him moisturizing hand soaps, but now the chapping is so severe that the backs of his hands are cracking and bloody all the way to his wrists. I've tried many lotions to try to moisten his skin, and what seems to be working the best currently is Yes to Carrots. I have him sleep with these moisturizing gloves on to hold in the lotion, but I can't seem to ever make it completely better.
Should I talk to his pediatrician about his seeming "germ phobia?" Of course, I have talked to him very, very often about this not being quite so necessary, but we seem to be at loggerheads about this. About 6 months ago, he built a computer, and now it has gotten quite worse. He insists he doesn't want his computer getting dirty, but I think this goes way deeper than that. Just now, I stopped him from taking the trash out and I did it myself because I knew that he immediately would come back in the house and scrub his hands. He won't pet the dogs or the cats either, might get his hands dirty.
Any advice would be appreciated....thanks so much.
