U.S. to send delegation to Chavez's funeral

Posted: Mar 7, 2013

The delegation will be rubbing elbows with a lot of enemies. Will the delegation even be allowed in the country? Guess time will tell.

Venezuela’s long, weepy goodbye to Hugo Chavez carried on Thursday as foreign heads of state — and even a delegation sent by the Obama administration — made their way to Caracas in advance of Friday’s funeral.

Venezuelan authorities have not said when Chavez will be laid to rest, nor exactly where. It was just one of many uncertainties facing the country after Chavez succumbed to a long battle with cancer Tuesday at age 58, after 14 years in power.

In what appeared to be a conciliatory gesture, U.S. officials said a delegation of congressional members and State Department officials would travel to Caracas. There was no word on who would lead the delegation, but President Obama issued a statement soon after Chavez’s death Tuesday saying the United States wanted a “more functional” relationship with Venezuela’s next leader.

Elections that will determine Chavez’s successor will be held within the next 30 days, Venezuelan officials have said, but they have not yet set a date.

U.S. officials also said the United States has no immediate plans to retaliate against Venezuela for the expulsion of two American military attaches from the U.S. Embassy in Caracas in the hours prior to Chavez’s death.

Relations with the United States were strained throughout Chavez’s time in power, as the Venezuelan leader delighted in taunting American leaders and worked tirelessly to undermine American diplomacy in the hemisphere. He also forged close ties with such U.S. rivals as Iran, Syria and Cuba.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was one of several world leaders en route to Caracas on Thursday to attend Chavez’s services. “No doubt Chavez will return to Earth together with Jesus and the perfect” Imam Mahdi (the most revered figure of Shiite Muslims), Ahmadinejad said following Chavez’s death.

We will see if that ever actually happens.

Yes, it would, and - sm

sending a delegation to pay respects could be a good way to begin that conversation.

Of course if a government doesn't want a more functional relationship with another, then by all means ignoring them and refusing to acknowledge the death of their leader is definitely the way to go.

But this may be a good segue to building a more functional relationship.

Of course they are. One of the afternoon people (sm) - Fox Watcher

on Fox said yesterday afternoon that of course the U.S. wouldn't send anyone. As I do often, I yelled at the TV. Of course they will send someone. Obama is the President. Chavez was a ruthless dictator, so he not only got a bow but qualified as Obama's friend. People can be so dense.

We may be able to have better relations with - the new president.

to what standards a communist country is held to be considered a "good country". Apparently China the communist country is good. Venezuela the communist country is bad. Cuba the communist country is bad. I guess it matters if the country allows US companies to use its people as slaves or not.

for South and Central American countries. They basically all get two choices. Become isolationist states ruled by fear and controlled by local interests, or globalize and give up everything they have to the developed world, becoming nothing more than 21st century banana republics.

If Venezuela has any chance at a decent life, they should be wary of us. Continue to sell fuel to the developed world, but never allow foreigners to buy land or resources, which sadly will require nationalization of resources. Buddy up with OPEC and Mexico. We're addicted to energy, so we'll buy even if they hate us.

We make a poor case to developing nations to adopt globalization and free market capitalism. We want them to join a Monopoly game already in progress where all the choice real estate is bought and fully developed. They don't stand a chance. Capitalism may be better than communism, but we're not making it look so great. Why work hard all your life, make someone else rich and die, when you're already working hard all your life, making someone else powerful and then dying? It's a small change to the equation.

If we want Venezuela and the rest of the communist world to see the light, we need to make our system definitively better than the one they use.

I like, but it IS doable one main, easy change--a living wage - at base. When all full-time workers

[ In Reply To ..]
earning a minimum wage can provide the basics for a small family, and those making more also have money to save and enjoy life with, it works.

We used to pretty much have just that. I remember. That WE were a wealthy people was the big difference between us and those in poor republics.

Now, who is it who convinced so many that distributing half our national wealth upward to 0.1% of us was moral but distributing a fair share out among all the working people who created it was wrong?

I think it depends on the strength of their military - nm

To Send Or Not To Send Christmas Cards? SmDec 17, 2010
In the age of cell phones and computers, I figure that I would text Merry Christmas to everyone and/or send free e-cards via email or other social network sites. Some disagree with me that that is too informal, lazy, what have you. I do have some cards that I do send to people with no phone, PC, or do not have their number or email, i.e. elderly folks and neighbors. My thoughts on this are: A. I already pay for my cell phone and email so texting and e-cards are free. B. I can send the same car ...

Putin See $5B In Arms For ChavezApr 06, 2010
I hope the U.S. is keeping an eye on Columbia. This can't be good.   Venezuela may spend more than $5 billion to buy Russian weapons, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Monday, signaling that the country is a larger market than Russia had expected. Putin, who met Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Friday, did not say what time span the potential contracts would cover, but he implied that they were almost a done deal. “Sources for funding have been generally determined a ...
