It's been my observation this week

Posted: Mar 26, 2010

that we, as a group of people that come to this site, are as varied as they come. We are all passionate about our beliefs, values. I have not seen yet one person that has changed their mindset on anything due to something that another poster said.

This weeks hot topic of course is the health care system. Some here are so dead set against it that it scares me, as well as those that are so set in favor of it. Why does it scare me? Both sides are so set in their thinking that I honestly believe that if they met in person that it would come to a shouting match that could/would lead to blows. That scares me.

I've often wondered why just because two people show different ways of thinking that things have to get so mean and hateful? Why ? Is it that we are not willing to accept that the other person may have different views on things? So what if they do? Does what one person think really effect my life? Not always. Can I do something to change another person's way of thinking? NO. Not unless THEY are willing to see another side of things.

So why bother arguing here?

I've seen this group of people be so supportive of another poster in times of sadness. But at other times I've seen almost pure hate.

It's alright to have different views from another person. That is what has made this nation as great as it is. But to go after another person because of what they support (or don't support) is just wrong.

Why can't we as a group of grown adults agree to disagree and let it go at that?

If we look back in history things have changed before. And they will change again long after we are gone. Sometimes change is good, sometimes change is not so good. I'm no genius... far from it. But maybe change in the health care system could be a good thing. I don't know. I'm not that smart to know what is good for the nation as a whole. And as far as that goes I don't think that there is anybody here that would fall into that category. IF they were then why aren't they in our nations capitol?

It just bothers me to see so many be so mean to others over something that nobody here knows EVERY POINT OF FACT about what the health care bill is about.

If we could/would drop the mean remarks (I've seen it from both sides not just one, so don't go there) and just talk about FACTS it would be a lot better.

Well, that's my opinion..... which is like behinds..... everybody has one.

Very good post - Backwards Typist

but it's not the first time a plea was made like yours. It falls on deaf ears all the time.

This country is changing and I don't think some of the changes are good. I live in a poor county, rural area. People here used to be kind and considerate of others. In the past few years, it has changed to a rude and inconsiderate population. For example, there is a law that pedestrians have the right of way if crossing a street in the middle of a traffice lane, you have to stop and let them cross. Do the cars/trucks stop? Only when they can't avoid hitting the pedestrian, but they'll blow their horns like crazy.

I could go on and on, but I won't. Anyway, it was a very good post. :-)

That is an excellent post and I agree 100% - Anony2/just me/hmmm

I hope people will listen to your words because they don't with others.

You worded this very eloquently and I thank you for this post. You said everything better than I could.

I agree. Awesome post. One can only hope - ASmom

that EVERYONE on this board reads it in the spirit it was clearly offered and acknowledge, even if only to themselves, where they have contributed and consider that maybe there other ways of handling things.

That's why they say if you want to get along, - never

[ In Reply To ..]
discuss religion or politics.

That is true. But in the past people have been civil with each other - Anony2

And have been able to discuss issues on both sides without all the name calling. I'd never talk to my MIL, sister, mom, brothers, and friends no matter how much I disagree with them like people on this board think they have the right to do.

Behind each of these posts is a human being. We eat, sleep, and drink, we wake up each day and try and make a living the best we can. We are all basically the same except for our difference of opinion with some. There has been no reason whatsoever for all the hate that has poured fourth below. I just hope the board can get back to the way it used to be. Share ideas, share links, talk about issues. If you don't agree, so be it, but be respectful.

What you said is exactly what my grandpa always told me when I was growing up. He said if you have friends or are going to a function, do not speak politics or religion. You'll only end up in an argument.

In all honesty, I have to say that I have NEVER seen - civility last long on the politics board.

Must have been before I was ever looking at it, but its been this way for years.
Same here. I have noticed - that

there is a lot of tit for tat that goes on. For instance, the vandalism was in the headlines. The immediate response was it's a conspiracy by the libs to make the cons look bad and then the libs were accused of not admitting that libs vandalize too. I don't see where that came from, but oh well.

Then someone posted a search with the headlines, and someone came back hours later and said, see I can do a search too and made a remark about sweeping Cantor under the rug when it hadn't even been reported yet. How can we avoid this? Should someone who posts headlines that shed a poor light on one side or the other do a historical search first in order to hopefully find and post similar information to shed some equally poor light on the opposite side?

"Here's today's headlines, and here is some historical data showing the other side did something similar in such and such month and year." Disclaimer: If we find out the other side is in the headlines for something similar later today, please realize that I could not be aware of it at the time of this posting.

If we could keep it about current events it would help I believe.

It's the same on this board as you see on TV, albeit less involved since we don't get paid for it. We are not here to rile up the nation, just feeding off of those who are. They're good at what they do.

P.S. The cons are on the offense and the libs are on the defense right now. Has anyone ever heard the political saying; "Issues? There's only one issue...Sam's got the job and I want it."

Just An ObservationJul 16, 2012
I, just on an off chance, was in a position to watch a bit of the Huckabee Show last night.  Coincidentally he had four doctors on his show, from various areas of expertise and from various areas across the country.  He had them on his show to ask them their ideas and observations concerning Obamacare and how it will affect their practices.  All of them were "private practice" physicians, not associated with any large hospitals.  All of them said that if Obamacare was passed, ...

Democrats had control of congress during the last 2 years of Bush's administration.  Democrats had total control of congress and the WH during the first 2 years of Obama's administration.  Can someone please explain to me why it is the republicans fault that the democrats didn't get anything accomplished during the time they had control?  Sorry to say but this whole "republicans are obstructionists" argument just doesn't jive with me.  If the president and ...

How many posts did we see about the tea party protests and how they claimed to be racist as well as inciting violence?  Now we have these unions workers protesting in WI with the governor sporting Hitler's mustache and several posters that could be taken as inciting violence....and yet I don't see anyone pointing that out.  Why is that?   ...

An Observation On RomneyOct 29, 2012
Every time he speaks, he inserts his smarmy little scripted catch-phrases (usually badly in the context) and it's obvious he's been coached and coached and coached and coached and he still doesn't quite get it. The man is an empty suit. There's no depth, no sincerity, no real grasp there. It's really quite disconcerting. ...

Some Observation About Beck And An ArticleNov 25, 2009

Another Observation On The Politics BoardSep 20, 2012
I have been thinking how boring and pointless this Board has gotten in the last couple of months with the incessant Obama bashing and anything Democratic or liberal.   I noticed that apparently I am not the only one thinking this because next to each post there is the counter that says how often a post is viewed.  I notice that most original posts barely get over 50 hits and most secondary posts get maybe 10 to 25.  I did a random search of the achives and found that th ...

From E. J. Dionne in the Washington Post: "I was talking with an old friend who is with one of the nonpartisan polling outfits (and who also happens to be a very good and fair-minded pollster). He offered an observation so priceless that it needs to be widely shared. 'When you give conservatives bad news ...

Benghazi: Similar to five other government reports, the one released by the House Intelligence Committee on Friday left Republicans in the same position they have been in for two years: with little evidence to support their most damning critiques of how the Obama administration, and then-Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, responded to the attacks. So, they say Biden and some "top" Democrats will not be attending. I understand the sentiment, and they can always watch on CSPAN and get the info, I suppose, but I do think they should listen, even if they don't believe he should be here, which I agree, he shouldn't.
