I begin homeschooling my son next week

Posted: Nov 2, 2013

Monday is his last day at public school.

;

find another home schooling group - so he still gets social contact

There are usually home school groups that meet once or twice a month so the parents can share and the kids can meet with other kids. Find one of those in your area and I think it will be a huge help to you.

Also, are you working at home so you can supervise his school work? Do you have a "business plan" for how this is going to work? A friend of mine many years ago had a daughter who was going through a lot of issues at school. She pulled her out of public school and put her into the nice, private, expensive Christian school and she had many of the same problems. She ended up "home schooling" the daughter, but because Mom and Dad both had to work because Dad was back in school himself, the kid was home alone by herself working on school work. Yeah, that didn't work and she never did graduate. I think she may have gotten her GED at some point later on, but I'm not sure.

My point is that yes, he may be a good kid and may be able to stay focusd, but you are still going to need to be around and present to make sure he keeps that focus and direction.

Good luck. You're taking on an awful lot. I'm sending you good wishes.

Wonderful that you are homeschooling!! - I homeschool too

and still work at home full-time. I have always done this and homeschooled my 4 children. I am down to the last one now. I am a true IC so I work when I want and don't adhere to a schedule so it allows me a lot of flexibility. I am home at all times so my child is never home alone. Legally, we have to be home anyways. I wouldn't trade homeschool in a million years. I would just say to you to be disciplined and have good time management. Try to plan ahead on your schooling like on the weekends, plan lessons in advance and be as prepared as you can be documenting your lessons and what you are doing daily. Find other like-minded homeschoolers for support and friendships. And most of all enjoy this experience with your child. They are precious times and so beneficial for your child. He/she will be the better and you will learn many things along the way too. They are many negative responses to homeschooling, but stand tall and go with the conviction to do so. You will not regret it even when it gets tough, just hang in there.

thanks! yes I work from home still. Back in school myself - have a good friend that is meeting with me

I homeschool my 15 and 12 year olds and my 9 and 7 year olds are in public school. I think the wisest thing somebody once told me is to choose what works for each kid, each year. For some kids at some points of their life, public school may be better and at other times homeschooling and for some kids, it really could go either way.

Another essential with homeschooling is that not every curriculum works for all students or in all subjects. Some students might do well with (just an example) A Beka language arts but do poorly with their math, do not hesitate to mix and max curricula. You also need to evaluate curricula based on your teaching style and your child's learning style (this I think takes some experience).

You do not say how old your son is so that somewhat limits the advice I can give but I would absolutely go to Rainbow Resource and request their catalog, it is mind boggling to contemplate the amount of resources available. They do not even have everything, like the math we prefer (Math-U-See). I would also consider looking at the Well-Trained Mind (library probably has it but may not have the most recent version). We do not follow their recommendations completely but there is a lot of good and practical information in the book.

Another piece of advice is to not be afraid to take a break. Sometimes kids just do not understand what we want them to. If furstration levels are reaching a peak (yours or theirs) it is okay to take a break and come back to it (even if that means not coming back until next week). I hope you enjoy your new journey.

Homeschooling DebateApr 20, 2010
Looking for the good, the bad and the ugly.  I have 2 elemetary aged children and am currently working PT but making next to nothing.  Over the past year we have adjusted our standard of living radically based on my dropping pay/health as an MT and my DH's job furloughs and cutbacksl.  I get medical insurance from his company, so I don't really need any benefits.  If I lose my job, I could potentially home school the kids.  Not sure if they would benefit greatl ...

Wow! Where To Even Begin? Nov 15, 2016
The consequences of the Trump-elect situation are really hitting the fan. So far, Trump's two named main advisors have no  government leadership exerience. One of his National Security transition team has already resigned--(probably one of Trump's better picks, Mike Rogers). The staff person who is scapegoated on requesting security clearance for Trump's kids is gone.   (Hmmm, put 2 and 2 together there, eh?) Trump has already been on the phone with Putin (while Obam ...

Where To Begin SearchingNov 19, 2014
I wrote a few weeks ago regarding an elderly neighbor who was mowing the leaves in the middle of the road in the dark.  We have now had a whole week of his constant gas-generated leaf blower blowing up and down the street all day long into the night, then after the leaf blower the lawn mower.  He has no lights or anything so don't know how he can see what he is doing because we also don't have street lights.  If he hits a rock (which is usually what you find in roads) it ...

Sanford Impeachment Hearings BeginNov 24, 2009
Mark Sanford is under investigation for breaking ethics laws and now faces an impeachment hearing for leaving the state without anyone to make excutive decisions while with his Argentinian mistress.  I think one's personal affairs (pun intended) including one's sex life are just that - personal. I do have a problem with him "abandoning" the state for 5 days, being incommunicado, while engaging in that affair, though. The ethics charges - mostly misuse of funds type stuff - are a ...
