In my opinion, faith is supposed to be a very personal relationship one has with the creator. It is not something to be paraded around as though you are better than others because you do this or that. From what I have read (cannot site book or verse), but my understanding is that God is in each one of us. It was never meant that people were supposed to go sit in a dwelling having others (pastors, ministers, priest, bishops, etc) tell people how they are supposed to think and believe and act.

I have plenty of relatives and friends who "religiously" attend church, but what they do on their "days off" how they treat people is how shall I say kindly and in my own opinion - not very christian.

When you "give yourself" to a church you have now just joined a cult. You do what they say and don't question it. As we've been told - quote from my aunt and her cult "Just trust and have faith. Do not question. These are the words of God". Funny how their "words of God", when posting the bible versus up on a big screen TV doesn't match to what is in the Bible.

To me asking people if they go to church is as wrong as walking up to people wanting to know if they've been saved so you can meet your quota (not you personally, but anyone who do this). It is nobody's business what people believe in, whether they have been saved, and whether they go to church. Makes me wonder what other personal and intimate details of my life does some stranger want to know.

As a side note, from the time I was born until I left home at 20 years old I attended church and Sunday school (Methodist, Episcopalian, and Catholic). Even though it was my choice to attend church and I enjoyed it, as I became an adult and got out in the world I learned that what they teach in church is just a warm fuzzy feeling but I find no truth in it.

Again, everything I wrote is my very own opinion.

surprised by the no's - I wouldn't miss it :-) sm - dem

To OP, yes, faith is "very personal" but God calls us into "community". The church (people NOT the building/organization) is the Body of Christ and we are meant to share our gifts corporately. Also, God (Father/Son/Holy Spirit) is himself a "community."

Also, God doesn't want or ask us to "give ourselves to church" as you put it, but to GIVE OURSELVES TO GOD.

So just make me kind of sad to read your post. I understand you have a right to your own feelings and opinion. For me, I have found (yes, been to some not so great churches) a wonderful "church family" and it builds my faith and understanding to just be in fellowship with other believers. I hope you can find the same for yourself. Peace. :-)

I tend to agree with your sentiments...sm - Alys

I had no choice as a child and we went to church every Saturday (the 7th day is the Sabbath, not the 1st--which I still believe} but I never go any more and not because I was forced as a child but today the church has changed so drastically from when I went as a child. Sin is accepted and even promoted, everyone is judged if they don't believe exactly what the pastor preaches (even if it doesn't coincide with what the Bible teaches) and so many claim to be "Christian" and yet still treat others so badly. I just want no more of it. Does that mean I no longer believe in God and his teachings?? DEFINITELY NOT... I still believe--just don't believe I have to sit around in a building once a week with hypocrits. I can believe and love God in my own home. If a person was stranded on a desert island for many years, would that mean he/she was no longer a "Christian" because they couldn't attend church? I think not. Some people thrive going to church, others do not. I am one of the "others." I have been judged too harshly by the "Christians" in my church for things as simple as not being able to make it in every week when I lived 90 miles from the closest church or not being able to afford to send our children to church school when it was financially unrealistic. I have a close relationship with the Lord and I don't have to set foot in a "church." Will I be saved?? I don't know....I don't believe that anyone actually knows. It just feels good to say it. The murderer who gives his heart to Christ may be saved whereas the preacher who stands in the pulpit every week, yet cheats on his wife, may not--no matter how many times he says, "I've been saved." Just my thoughts on the matter. Take 'em or leave 'em.

As a child I never felt like I was forced. It's just something we did. Every Sunday, right as rain we went. That was just what was done (like washing your hair on Friday nights, Scouting on Saturdays). Just was a part of my life. I enjoyed both church and Sunday school, but I was a child and didn't know better. I thought that was the way thing should be and I never questioned a religious person for the stuff they were brainwashing us with. It was only until after I stopped attending regular church services and sunday school and I got out in the world and read, read, read, read everything I could and had my own experiences about the teachings that I learned that the churches I went to were indeed cult organizations. My sister belongs to hers, my aunt to hers, etc. The funny thing is nobody ever believes they belong to a cult. The mormons, jehovas, scientology, methodist, catholic, etc. They all believe they are not part of a cult. I say if you want to go to church because its fun, you have friends, and it's a great social event that's fine. To each their own. I just know that what they "preach", is not the truth. I've also learned in my years of researching and studying (and other things I've done I'd rather not get into) that there is no devil as the churches tried to threaten us with that if we didn't follow them there was also that nasty little fellow called the devil after our souls. HA HA HA. It's funny how once you study and learn more, those imaginary things aren't so scary anymore.
You have learned that there is no devil? - truffle

People believe things all the time that simply are not true. Just because you believe something doesn't make it so.

You make a lot of statements as though they are facts, when really they are your opinions or your own personal beliefs. Perhaps as your life progresses, you will read and study some more and come to believe or learn different things.

Yes of course they are my opinions, and - anon

Because of the research, studying, and participation in rituals and groups I have had over the years this is what I believe to be fact. Unless I do some more research and find something contrary to the information I have found, I will always believe what I have learned to be fact. Usually when someone has an opinion/belief, to me that is a fact to that person. Some examples is that I have studied and learned the differences between methodist/baptist/catholic - I consider that to be fact since I've done the research. I have also studied and attended rituals. When certain things happen or don't happen and what does or does not happen aligns with what the books and other material states I take that to be fact.

No, there is no devil. That is a fact. Whether you believe it or not is your prerogative and your opinion. I believe there is no devil from what I have studied and been involved in therefore I take that to be fact.

Everyone has their opinions. Those are mine and I believe them to be fact.

If you want to believe in a fictional character that is your prerogative.
The devil...sm - Alys

is actually an angel, Lucifer, who was thrown out of heaven by God because he wanted to be as powerful as God. I believe in the devil/satan/Lucifer. Only a devil could make some people behave the way they do.

the devil... - Becky

The devil is real, not a fictional character. The Bible states the story and his character clearly. I realize not everyone is going to believe in the Bible and be Christian, but Christianity has so much historical truth bases to it, and believe it or not, things that have been foretold and in fact come to light. I challenge nonbelievers to just study about it and research about it. You are free to believe or not believe, but unlike most other world religions (if not all), there is historical truth in the Bible/Christianity that can be proven. Just research. Then believe as you will.

Do you go to church every week - ? - EagleEye

Not at this point in time. I used to be a regular church-goer and was brought up going to church every Sunday as a child. I just got out of the habit of going after many years. I do believe in God though. I actually have a lot of faith. My personal take on this subject is that you can be a Christian or a believer and not attend church. I have had a lot of bad experiences in churches over the years dealing with the other people who go there. There are some very "Un-Christian" types of people who do go to church and think they are the most righteous of the bunch and try to push others around with their beliefs and opinions. A lot of that type of behavior by others turned me off to go to church. I also feel that many churches try to lure people in just to get that donation in the plate each week. Once they get you to join the church then they act as though you don't even exist anymore. Those are just the types of experiences I have had over the years. I can pray and talk to God at home just as easily as I can in building surrounded by a bunch of hypocrites. Not saying all churches are this way, but it has been my experience to have gotten this type of treatment from several I have attended.

Yes, I love it! - minnaB

I Gave Up Going To ChurchMay 31, 2013
I used to be an avid church-goer. Catholic, back when you went into a confessional to confess what you felt was a sin. Then one day, the priest (in all his glory) during a mass said, "I forgive you all for whatever you have done." That really got my goat. You didn't even have to feel bad about whatever it was you did, you were just now automatically forgiven, in one big swoop. I knew people in that church that were horrible to their children and spouses. So, I just knew that they went to c ...

Separation Of Church And State....Apr 27, 2015
I agree that the government should stay away from religion - therefore, it follows that the government should not be able to tell me how to practice my religion - if my faith follows the teachings of the Bible, then I should not have to pay for abortions since I  believe that to be murder.  It should allow me to refuse to photograph a gay couple - since that goes against my beliefs.  The government has no problem with me giving money to the poor, helping out with relief in Haiti, ...

Since it's freedom of speech for them to protest, let's take the union protestors, since they like to protest so much, and send them to WBC and let them protest for as many days and weeks they did in WI. (I"m kidding, of course). Do you think if a group protested outside their church, standing 1000 feet away from them, that it would be considered freedom of speech?  This makes my blood boil. A month or two ago news broke that Obama’s HHS was calling for private contractors to help transport illegal aliens throughout the interior United States.
