Just a simple observation/double standard

Posted: Feb 21, 2012

When my state voted on whether or not to be a right-to-work state, I had so many democrats yells at me and tell me that if I didn't like unions, I should look for a job elsewhere.

Well...how about this.  If ya'll don't like that Catholic institutions don't provide birth control, you should look for a job elsewhere.

Just a thought.  ;)

Agree with you 100%. Unfortunately, you see it all over this board; pick any thread. If you agree with some of the crazy stuff on here, you are held up and exalted. Give a difference of opinion and there are multitudes waiting to let blood. With my work schedule, it can be days I am off of here, and when I come back, the same snotty, rude comments, written by the same bitter posters is still going on. To your comment, the union here tried to keep people that did not want a union, from being able to vote against having a union (obviously, thereby forcing them into a union they did not want), and actually filed suit under some really stupid charge. Thankfully, it was thrown out. People have immense freedom to move, quit jobs, attend whatever church. Too bad some are just to lazy to take any action other than flapping the gums. ;)

As long as I have had health insurance...I've never had insurance that covered birth control. I guess I don't understand why this administration would attack Catholic institutions and demand they provide BCP for their employees when other insurance doesn't pay for it either. Yes, a woman has a right to BCP. No Catholic institution is keeping her from attaining it. She can go many other places to acquire BCP. So why are we attacking Catholic institutions? I'm not Catholic and I still don't get it. I use birth control and I pay for it out of my pocket, but I still don't see the reasoning behind forcing an institution to go against its beliefs. I hear atheists all the time complaining about Christians trying to force our religion down their throats. Well...this is pretty much the same thing...IMO.

I've also come to realize that some liberals are all about freedom and free speech as long as it coincides with their beliefs. You differ from their opinion and you get called every name possible and told to shut up. But this ranting and raving about women's rights comes from the same people who believe it is okay to murder an innocent unborn child but you cannot put a convicted murderer to death because he is a human being. Seems to me some of their beliefs are a tad bassackwards.

Catholic institutions are not being forced to cover birth control for their employees. Rather, Catholic hospitals and universities may not limit access to birth control to the communities they serve.

If I'm going to a doctor or medical facility - Trigger Happy

and I don't receive the care that I want, I am free to go to another facility and/or doctor. Last time I checked, you could get birth control at your local Planned Parenthood regardless if your doctor is affiliated with a Catholic institution or not. If you want birth control, tugal ligation, abortions, etc.....don't doctor at a Catholic institution. Seems pretty simple to me. That way I get what I want and I'm not forcing them to disregard their beliefs on my behalf. I don't agree 100% with Catholicism but I respect that religion. I wouldn't want someone to force me to do something against my beliefs and I'm sure you wouldn't like it if the government totally disregarded your beliefs and made you do something you didn't believe in.
not everyone is free to go to another doctor - sm

I would say: if you want to be in the game of public health, you cannot exclude services based on religious belief. Catholic institutions are free to limit services to their employees, but not to the general public.

A healthcare institution providing services to the public does not make me do something I don't believe in.
Nice spin...still not buying it. - :0

Everyone is free to go to Planned Parenthood. As for birth control being beneficial for women...the only thing beneficial is pregnancy prevention but no one seems to remember all the side effects and warnings that go along with birth control....like DVTs, strokes, etc. Catholic institutions are in place to promote Catholicism and anyone who goes there for treatment surely understands that. This was never an issue before. Why attack Catholic institutions now? Planned Parenthood is always an option for that kind of treatment...no reason to attack an institution based on Catholic beliefs.
I appreciate your points, but here's my big but... - : )

I do think there are more benefits to birth control than pregnancy prevention, including, but not limited to, autonomy in relationships.

Contrary to your assertion, however, I do not believe Catholic institutions are in place to promote Catholicism. I thought they were in place to provide service to the community.

If Catholic institutions wish solely to promote Catholicism, they are free to to do so - and in so doing, forfeit reimbursement from federal programs such as Medicare and Medicaid. They can't have it both ways.

I am not aware of any Jewish hospitals that mandate circumcision for newborn males, and I am not convinced this is not a good analogy.

Your post is spot on. Unfortunately, look at this board, especially after my posts, you will see those hateful and nasty comments from the ones always screaming about freedom and rights. No facts, no thoughtful discussion or contriubtion to the board. I think a lot of people have their priorities all screwed up. Rather than educate themselves, they want everyone on their side, regardless of how offensive people find some of those positions. Seems like a lot on here only want freedom if they are the ones dispensing it. No one ever paid for my BCP. If you are so irresponsible you cannot set the priorities in your life, your budget, your sex life, then get your tubes tied and have significant other get vasectomy. I'm with you all the way in your post. Very thoughtful and I appreciate your contribution.

have the money for BC pills is going to be able to afford tubal ligation or vasectomy? What happens if they are barely making it, no welfare or food stamps, he/she is employed by a religious institution that provides group insurance at a cost. Is it fair that they should be denied BC, TL or vasectomy for family planning just because they are employed by a religious institution whether or not they are of that religion? We are talking responsibility here, people who are on the borderline of poverty and trying to do what is right for their family. Religious institutions do have a lot of autonomy, as well as being tax exempt, but they do also have to abide by Labor laws, minimum wage, HIPAA requirements, and other governmental laws. If they accept government funds for Medicare and Medicaid patients funds and they are tax exempt, they must abide by the law of the land. Of course this is only my opinion which doesn't mean much. ...no, I don't believe in abortion, am a Catholic, but disagree with the church when it comes to zero tolerance for ANY birth control, all rules made by old white men.

I did a little research in regards to your question. I absolutely agree with all stating this is against the constitution, specifically the first amendment. I do not believe any faith should ever be forced by government to provide, pay for or perform services and products that are in direct opposition to their religious freedom and the practice thereof.

Now to answer your question about the poor. My first question would be -- do these poor have cable, big screen TVs, go to Starbucks, eat out or pack their lunch, cook dinner or routinely order in, do they have new cars or several cars, do they smoke, to they use any recreational drugs, do they have charge cards, loans, store charges? There are very, very few people that truly fall in the poor category, but there are multitudes that live beyond their means, and then claim they cannot make ends meet the what they make. These people lists their wants as needs, which are 2 very different things.

I contacted PP where I live. Just within the city limits alone, which is not a huge city, there are 13 offices, all on bus lines with direct stops within feet of their front doors. There are also several outlying offices, as well. They offer shots as low as $20 (lasts 90 days), which means someone would need to put aside approximately 23-cents a day. If you want pills, you would need to put aside approximately 43-cents a day to $1.00-a day (depending on pills chosen). If you cannot afford services, PP will tailor a program specifically to your needs and your income; all through taxpayer funding and contributions (including abortions - so that myth of no funds for abortions is out the window). This info came right from the horse's mouth. If you need further assistance, that is also available. My personal MD did gave me free samples of BCPs, which another poster also stated.

So, there is no deprivation for any of these women for any of the services mentioned. When you take a job with a religious instition of any sort, you know exactly what goes on there. If someone found those faith beliefs so offensive or restrictive, or not to their liking or did not like the way the faith was practiced, or did not like the benefits offered, why work there? You cannot tell me that was the single only job available ever in the area where an individual lives. It was their choice to take the job or not; just as it would be their choice to take birth control or not.

So, yes it is fair for Catholics or any other faith against being forced by the government to provide services that directly violate those faith beliefs, based on the first amendment.

Sorry this is long, but wanted to answer your question with the same thought that you used in writing it. I also wanted to check my facts directly with PP. I hope this helps.

Your post smacks of bias: "do these poor have cable, big screen TVs, go to Starbucks". That is the kind of talk one heard in the 60s with regard to minorities on welfare.

Further, the outcome of your research is poor yield, as it addresses only urban dwellers.

Pretty clear you did not read post or you would have seen the portion below about "outlying areas", which clearly were not included with the city offices; for clarification, meaning they are not in the city. I live in an area some city and rural both. Those areas still do exist. Personally, do not care what you think of the info provided to me by PP and my post. However, if someone can afford the items mentioned, they can afford their own birth control and do not need to tap my bank account to do so. Please read the entire post.
