I'd like to get a job working 1 day a week ......

Posted: Mar 14, 2015

outside the home so I can get some people contact and not feel so isolated.  I live in a large city, but it's been difficult finding a job like this.  Because of some health problems, I can't do anything physically taxing like retail or Mcjobs.

I'd like to work in a medical office doing some kind of clerical work.  However, these jobs are usually got by word of mouth, and I don't know have any personal contacts who could let me know about available openings.  I have medical admin. assistant experience, so I do have skills other than MT.

Would appreciate any ideas/suggestions on how to go about finding this kind of work.

Maybe a temp agency or Indeed.com

How about - xx

volunteering at a local hospital? There are usually a variety of functions available to volunteers, some of which don't require physical strength. You will get to meet people and possibly make some connections that could lead to a paid job. Libraries also offer volunteer opportunities that don't require a lot of activity.

I've been thinking of doing this myself - bratty

find a place you'd otherwise like to work, and just ask them if they can use a volunteer once a week. Even for-profits don't mind this!--my daughter even volunteered once for a pet store, and later they hired her.

Part-Tmie - I agree

Try putting in Google "part-time jobs for (City and State)through Indeed.com and the kind of PT job you are looking for in your area should come up on the listing; check it a couple of times a week.

Substitute school bus driver - sm - sbdmt

[ In Reply To ..]
I worked for years as a substitute driver, now I work full-time, good thing too since MT has tanked. I make more driving than I do with MT. I make more in the 4 hours I drive a day than in 2-3 days of MT, pretty sad. We have subs that only want to sub and not work full-time. Odds are you could make an extra $200 or more a month a driving just 4 days a month...our sub pay is $60 a day for both runs ($30 for one) (about 4 hours of work), I make more than that due to FT (20 hours a week) and benefits. Obviously you have to go through the CDL training, etc. Here it is 24 hours classroom time (local school here trained me for free, then paid me for attending at $8/hour once I worked for them for six months), then 24 hours just driving an empty bus with your trainer with your learners permit, and then the driving test at DMV, then another 24 hours with trainer and kids on bus. Then you a approved to drive, once you go through the application process for job of course. Here it required a criminal background check, copy of your driving record which must be good, and you are fingerprinted too. Not a hard job, just need to be a good driver, very safety conscious and able to deal with 40-60 kids for about 2 hours or so a day.

Just had an idea... - OP

While reading all your great replies, I just thought of something. I worked for 4 years as an admin. assistant in a large department of a cancer center. I left 15 years ago, but the manager is still there and would remember me. Also, most of the doctors I worked for are still there.

I think I might write the manager and ask if they need some part-time help. I figure I have nothing to lose - all they can say is no. They do know me and my work, so the hardest part would be composing the email.

What do you all think?

Sounds promising - DO IT

One day a week is kind of hard, but I agree with volunteering somewhere first one day a week. If this isn't about making money, just being with people, volunteer is the way to go.

Nursing homes are always aching for people to help out with this and that. The snack bar, talking to residents who have nobody else to talk to. Depends on what you like to do.

I don't know if driving a bus would afford you being with people, except for being with kids only, and in probably not so pleasant circumstances.

Benghazi: Similar to five other government reports, the one released by the House Intelligence Committee on Friday left Republicans in the same position they have been in for two years: with little evidence to support their most damning critiques of how the Obama administration, and then-Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, responded to the attacks. He will be spending so much time every day this week talking about the economy, the deficit, what's wrong and how to fix it (hopefully). I can't remember what else he'll be talking about, but it sounds interesting. Right now, he's talking about the bribes in Afghan...$13.5B are spent bribing people, loaded on pallets in Pakistan and shipped to Dubai.  They have it on tape now. If you can't watch it, it will probably be on line tomorrow. ...

Still some undecideds, which, I find completely reasonable at this point in the process. There are a lot of people who won't get involved for a while. The Republican Party Left Me This WeekMar 05, 2011
