RLS - NYMT

I have the same problem and it interferes not only with sleep but with watching TV or driving distances. I also have ADD, and while I had insurance I was taking Strattera and it incidentally helped the RLS. I've never tried Requip, and I don't know if there's any real link between RLS and Strattera. I only know it worked for me. Sorry to say, now that I'm uninsured, I'm back to square one, and haven't found anything really non-medication wise that does me any good. I'd love to hear some options to try myself. I do know that I try and deliberately keep my legs moving until they get too tired to move, but that is only practical when my husband's not in bed with me. Sorry, this is more of a commiseration than a solution.

I have had a severe case of restless leg for years. The neurologist has me on 4 mg of generic Requip (two 2 mg tablets). It is important to take the first of those 2 tablets several hours before bedtime to get the medicine to kick in. I take the second pill an hour after the first one. It is a juggling act - as the Requip makes me a bit nauseous and sleepy and interferes with my evening transcription. The neurologist also says to put a bar of soap (some swear by Ivory) under your sheets. No, I'm not kidding! I finally got some today and will try it tonight (odd that a neurologist would go along with what I consider a wives' tale, but he said to try it). The Requip solves the creepy tickly sensations, but I still toss and turn, and have minor jerks. I have finally been prescribed Desyrel for a sleep aid from the neurologist over the phone, and can't get the medicine until next week, so hope that will help for the rest of the restless leg symptoms. Let me know how you do - restless leg is very challenging as I am alway sleep-deprived.

Soap For Restless Legs
Posting Date: 01/31/2005

Q. This is either an urban legend or a friend is playing a joke on me. She says that if you sleep with a bar of soap (not Dove or deodorant kind) the restless leg syndrome (RLS) will not occur.

She swears that she read this someplace and that it worked for a relative. Since it was non-invasive, I slept with a bar of soap for two weeks. No RLS, but I still had leg cramps.

Is this a placebo? Mind over-matter? It is NOT logical! Have you ever heard of such a thing?

A. Your friend may have read about the soap remedy in our column. We agree that putting a bar of soap under the bottom sheet is illogical. Like most remedies, it has never been tested scientifically. But we have heard from many readers that it helps prevent their cramps. Here is one:

?I have had severe leg cramps for years. When I read about putting a bar of soap in bed, I got a bar of Ivory and put it under the bottom sheet near my legs. It?s been a month since I did that, and I have not had one leg cramp.?

I also have heard about the soap thing - L

Where I heard it, do not know but heard it works. I heard 70% or higher chocolate worked for fibromyalgia, tried it and guess what, it works. I have suffered since 2004, heard and tried just this year and almost 100% painless now. Funny how just ordinary things can help.

An OTC herbal preparation with valerian, dandelion root, chamomile, and other proven natural sleep inducers, relaxes everything, and puts you predictably right to sleep! It is non-habit-forming, and you can actually break the tablets in half if you want to just try it, lots of times that is all that I need and they stretch further that way. They cost around $14.00 around where I live, but they last and it is well worth the great night's sleep I can get. Just my own experience, but I have other friends buying it with the same results. Good luck. I also take extra magnesium at night as I subscribe to Prevention Magazine and they advocate that.

RLS and cramps - TexMT

Do not know about drugs (uninsured and poor which means I self medicate and find alternative ways to treat myself) or the soap thing, but I cured my RLS and leg cramps by taking magnesium taurate 250 mg at bedtime and make sure I eat enough vegetables to keep my potassium intake up.

I think the chocolate thing may actually work because of the high magnesium level in chocolate or cocoa.

Hope this helps.

Over the past few years my grandfriends visit me during the summer as they are doing this year. This 12 year old's shaking has started since last year. We just got back from a time in the sun for about 8 days and new happening is that the 12 year old not only shakes her legs but her feet sometimes, sitting down she is knocking her knees together and then I have seen her rocking in a back and forth manner. I not only can see her but feel it, like driving and she is in the back seat having to ...

Iliotibial Band Syndrome.Sep 30, 2014
So far, the reading I've done on it suggests IT-band-stretching exercises, a foam roller for massage, etc.  Also hip-strengthening exercises.  Have any of you had this, and what did you find worked best for the pain?  (Note:  The pain is located on the outside back of the knee, near the top of the fibula.  Exacerbated by sitting then getting up, climbing and descending stairs, aerobics class, rollerblading, etc.  Biking is a little less painful.) ...

How Accurate Is The AFP Prenatal Test In Predicting Down's Syndrome?Mar 04, 2010
My niece is pregnant with her first child.  She is young, 19 years old, so she is not considered high risk.  However, in her prenatal screening, she had what her doctor called "a slightly abnormal" AFP test.  Everyone was pretty upset and I did a little research and found conflicting information.  Some say the test should stop being performed because it is inaccurate.  My niece has decided to forego having an amniocentesis because she says it will not change her mind.&n ...

Gramps TroubleFeb 16, 2011
So just a few months ago, my grandma passed away and it was very sudden. My grandparents were married for 67 years and she predeceased gramps. My grandpa was never the kind of man to "take care" of himself, meaning grams always did the cooking and cleaning , took care of the kids and so on, she was a good wife. Now that she has passed, dealing with gramps has become a real issue. I"m sure he is very lonely after having been with someone that long and suddenly without. But he is already contempla ...

Trouble In Not So ParadiseJul 06, 2014
Without going into too much detail I need some advice.  Basically, my husband and I have been married for 9 years.  I knew when we got married that he had anger issues, but he showed his temper only rarely.  We now have a 4-year-old little girl, and I have noticed his anger comes out a lot more, sometimes two to three times a week.  He has not hit us but he was physically abused as a child. He does yell and scream and sometimes throw things, not at me or her, but still. &nbs ...

Why We're In Trouble In This Country.Aug 25, 2015
We're in trouble because democracy absolutely depends on an electorate that is sufficiently well educated to be able to assess the claims of candidates, to reject the falsehoods and misinformation that political campaigns, their supporters and the press spew into the atmosphere, darkening the sky in an effort to hide the truth from the light of day, and having the ability and the intellectual honesty to objectively judge the character of those who aspire to political office. Democracy is f ...

SEIU Causing Trouble Again-Apr 02, 2015

They want in and the employees have been suckered into breaking the law (civil disobedience according to the police). So, here's my suggestion: Let the federal government set the wages and what it is, it is. Then let McD's tell the employees if they don't like it, they ...
