Heard of restless leg syndrome, but more body
Posted: Jul 22, 2014
Over the past few years my grandfriends visit me during the summer as they are doing this year. This 12 year old's shaking has started since last year. We just got back from a time in the sun for about 8 days and new happening is that the 12 year old not only shakes her legs but her feet sometimes, sitting down she is knocking her knees together and then I have seen her rocking in a back and forth manner. I not only can see her but feel it, like driving and she is in the back seat having to stop at an intersection I feel the car moving, look back and she is shaking her legs, sitting in a movie my seat is vibrating and sure enough the shaking is going on. She tells me she is "taking after her mother." Over the past 4 or 5 years her mother and I have been together I have known once for her to be shaking her legs when we were at Sea World together, but that is the only time I have been aware of the mother doing that. My question to others here is have you ever known anyone to do this just because of their trying to emulate someone, nervous condition, a condition that warrants investigation or nothing that would be of any concern? I wanted to ask because the mother is driving to pick the girls up and be as I might, have not been able to find much information by a Google search. Thanks.;

sounds like a serious neurologic problem to me.
Part of this may be just an abundance of energy - sm - NYMT

I've had this problem all my life, and I'm 62. It may be RLS, but I've never had it diagnosed. I just know that it feels like kinetic energy is building up in my legs and feet and I HAVE to move them. Not moving them is not an option. I've learned to control it in public (when I noticed everybody else in church wasn't jiggling, for instance), but in private I just go with it.
It's annoying, and when I was a kid I figured out that other people don't necessarily do that. It might be nice to just talk to her about it and point that out. If you make her feel bad about it, that won't accomplish anything, but I really don't think it is a serious neurological disorder, though maybe her mother should check with a doctor just to be sure.
I'm sitting here typing and swinging my legs. Sometimes my husband will ask me if there's an earthquake because I make the whole room jump, and I tone it down. She may be doing this for a long time, but it's harmless. I've even heard that people who jiggle all the time work off calories that they wouldn't otherwise, so there's that.
I wouldn't worry, though. Just let her know to be aware of it and how it affects other people. IMHO
Oh, good grief! How about FIDGETING? - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Sounds like common, garden-variety hyper-energetic fidgeting, if you ask me. It isn't a sickness! It is just excess energy.
Calling it "shaking" as you do makes it sound pathologic.
If her mom does it, she may be emulating it. She is even telling you that she is emulating it!
Google fidgeting and adhd for a good description of what it is. Loads of people fidget and a lot of fidgeters rock. It is not a problem to the fidgeter, just to you. We fidget when dull, boring people want us to sit still.
A lot of people would think that a need to overdramatize situations is evidence of some kind of pathology, but I bet you would think it is normal. Same thing with fidgeting.
Nothing worse than having someone make a big, freaking deal about something you do that they have defined as bad, wrong, and abnormal just because they, personally, don't happen to do it.
I would suggest you leave the kid alone.
Yo
I agree with your initial assessment - but not your put-down

She is concerned, that's all. Just needs reassurance, not criticism.
To me the shaking, jerky movements are ever bit as - bad as smaking gums, sucking your teeth

and other annoying things people do. I would imagine you would be the first to say how dictators affect you with their garbled speech, eating, drinking while dictating. I think people (young, old or in between) should have the decency to not offend. If you are dull and bored at Disneyworld running from one ride to another and jerking, fidgeting then nothing I know of would keep their attention. I tried to research the movements but really did not find too much on this. When she said she did this because of her mother doing it, I told her my mother one time pushed her neighbor thru the shrubs, did not mean I had to do the same. Thanks for the small a.... answer- NOT.
I had a different take on it - does it because she does not respect you
[ In Reply To ..]
She is demonstrating to you that you have no power over her. Maybe her mother is making her visit you against her wishes - at some point you will have to consider that even your throwing money around is not attractive enough to her to want to spend her entire summer putting up with you.
I told you before the girls would grow up without any respect for you. Sounds like she found your buttons and is pushing them.
For what it is worth, my take on your example of going to Disney and bouncing from one thing to another is not of being bored, but rather of stimulation overload, possibly in an ADHD child (although that by itself does not make a child ADHD).
Next time I run to my local grocery store who employs a couple of young men with Tourette's syndrome, I will pass along your pearls of wisdom that they "should have the decency to not offend" after listening to their verbal offerings. Or we could just send them to the asylums (out of sight would be best for those who offend our sensibilities, yes?).
Am not trying to have power over anyone, are you serious - because you sound sorta off
[ In Reply To ..]
She is not spending the "entire" summer with me, stop assuming. I had told the girls already that next summer I plan on spending my vacation in Europe with a tour group. I plan on visiting the family around Christmas but next trip is mine. No one "made" them come see me. I would never want to have someone bound and gagged in order to have company. I never remember anyone saying they would grow up and have no respect for me. I am positive they would totally disagree with your way of thinking, sort of warped in a way. You sound like you missed your daily medicine dosage, dear. Why don't you try taking that now while I enjoy my grandfriends?

Quick question - you couldn't walk from the church parking lot into the chapel for Sunday morning worship services, but you are up to motoring all around a Disney property with two preadolescent girls in the middle of summer?
Oh me, That's rich. Thanks for the LOL!

What is wrong with a person who is like a mentor - in young children's lives?
[ In Reply To ..]
Growing up I had what is called a "play mamma," not my real momma but someone I was extremely close to. She had no children of her own but did so much for me, teaching me how to cook which I wanted to do at a very early age and taking the time to spend with me, taught me piano. I loved her very much. For whatever reason something so innocent is trying to be twisted up and everyone should be so lucky as to have people in their lives who love and are concerned about their welfare. You don't have to be related to be part of a family unit.
nothing wrong when the other momma type is emotionally balanced - but not good when the FGM

b. Unconcerned with what the girls want.
c. Unconcerned for anything but her own enjoyment.
d. Lacking a moral compass to give proper direction to someone else's children.

around their kids. You have no idea of just how silly you sound like you know me personally and trying your best to make me out to be someone I am not. Hey, hate to break the news to you. I have a new housekeeper, she and her 3 children (ages 17, 10 and 8) come up and go swimming with me this summer (along with others) at my neighborhood pools, we've gone on picnics. Even she was saying her kids would LOVE to go with me to the WDW, etc. Eat your heart out that people don't feel the same about you. You are so far off course you have no clue about where you are.
With my family, it is more what my own children think - wheres_my_rock?

than what a new housekeeper thinks.
See, anybody can show up for the first 6-12 months in a relationship. After that, the real you shows up.
I am genuine and consistent. I don't have to talk about how I have money and what I can do for other people. I'm not trying to impress anyone. I never eat my heart out.
But when I see someone who has a need to constantly throw their money at people outside their family just to say how great they are, I feel sorry for them. Especially if they have grandchildren that they never, ever, ever talk about visiting with. There is something wrong when you don't get to do all that fun money soaking stuff with your own family. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
If you think I don't know what I'm talking about, why do you keep throwing it out here for discussion?
You already told me to go crawl back under my rock, that I needed medication and a therapist; I have never said that mean-spirited stuff about you, have I? I don't need to know you personally. I don't respect the bully you denigrate into when people don't give you their full support. It's like you have this creed: Blind em with blarney, bury em with bully.

second trip this summer- she went with us this past summer. She does not have as many days to travel like me but does and I also pay for her. You are just wrong because I have always paid for my family and others to enjoy theirselves and have fun, that to me is what life is about, enjoying what we can. You really again have no clue when I took my father, my aunt, my mother and many others on trips they wanted to go on because I can share and I do. I paid for and took my stepmom to Hawaii before she died. Like I said, you don't know me and have no clue. Now about the place to head back to.....

as they have living grandparents and I know them. Respect their place as the grandparents so instead of being called grandkids or grandchildren they are grandfriends because they along with their family are my friends. When the family lived close by the entire family and I went places, visited, etc. Since the family moved 2 years ago to another state I visit there about once a year and then the girls visit me in the summer. I have cats in my home, the approximately 6 and 5 year old boys have not yet learned to respect the cats and they do not visit without their mother or grandmother here. At the end of this vacation time for the girls and me their mother, 2 brothers and uncle are driving here to visit some family here, other friends and pick the girls up. As stated earlier, the girls and I are huge animal lovers and our summers are filled with animal events. This summer we had close up time with dolphins at Discovery Cove and coming up more animal adventures. So innocent and yet others here try to make it sound so perverted.
You misunderstand the problem - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I think you still don't grasp the problem. It isn't that you know this family or do things with their kids. Really, no one would care about that.
The problem is that this is a private thing between you and them, but (1) you bring it up here and talk about it repeatedly (every year, it seems), and (2) every time you do this there is some kind of issue involved that you somehow manage to make sound weird.
The first year you said you were getting some girls and wanted advice on furnishing a room for little girls and what they ate. Another year you had a problem with their mega-church, partly because you can't walk and partly because it was a cult. This time you are bothered by one of them "shaking," so you need advice about whether to tell the mother this might be a disease.
And every discussion comes down to you talking about how much money you have and how "innocent" this is.
If you have to keep talking about how innocent something is, it isn't.
We recognize you right off, too, because the topics are freaky, but also by your writing style. Your writing can be confused, tangential and so telegraphic that it sounds like pressured speech. People who pick up on that are creeped out by it.
