My niece is pregnant with her first child. She is young, 19 years old, so she is not considered high risk. However, in her prenatal screening, she had what her doctor called "a slightly abnormal" AFP test. Everyone was pretty upset and I did a little research and found conflicting information. Some say the test should stop being performed because it is inaccurate.
My niece has decided to forego having an amniocentesis because she says it will not change her mind. She is having her baby. So basically we are all praying and hoping for the best. But I'm just wondering how accurate some of the prenatal screening tests are.
19 years ago when my sister was pregnant with my niece, one of my sisters prenatal tests came back positive for syphilis. It was a false positive, but my sister freaked out, accused her husband of cheating on her, and then had a follow up test that said she did not have syphilis. So it makes me wonder what is the point of some of these tests? All they really do is completely scare an already nearly hysterical hormonal woman. When I was pregnant I was paranoid about everything!
So what's the consensus?
