SEIU causing trouble again-

Posted: Apr 2, 2015

McDonald's voluntarily raising wages in their restaurants but the workers want $15. Doesn't matter that McD's will also be giving better benefits, they aren't happy. It's all about the SEIU. They want in and the employees have been suckered into breaking the law (civil disobedience according to the police).

So, here's my suggestion: Let the federal government set the wages and what it is, it is. Then let McD's tell the employees if they don't like it, they can quit. After all, they are voluntarily raising rates and benefits. Bet if you add the benefits in, it would be MORE than $15.

What a shame people aren't happy with a job anymore (except for MT's of course. We've been getting screwed for years and the fed won't do anything about it).

McDonald's will only be raising wages in their company owned locations or 10% of their restaurants. So that leaves 90% of the locations owned by franchisees who will not get the pay raise. I read this in my newspaper this morning, an AP story.

Headline looks nice, McDonalds to increase pay, but you read the fine print, not so good for the majority of their workforce.

That $10.00 an hour has to feed a family of 4. - LOL

and do not always need the govment paying for it. My neighbor enrolled in a work/study program to become an electrician. He worked hard, never missed school or work. He received his electrical licensing without massive debts or loans. After he got the basics, he was making very good money and decided for further his career. Was never laid off a single day until Obama got in. Because of his education/degrees, he was still able to take care of his family by doing side jobs and hiring himself out (as an IC) wherever he was needed to companies that could no longer afford regular employees, full-time employees because of Obama and Obamacare

McDonald's, Walmart, Burger King, to name a few, all have management programs for free.

Community colleges all over the country offer free courses on a variety of subjects (I've availed myself of several.)

Problem is, the Libs would rather whine "there are no jobs, I can't make any money" instead of take time to make phone calls about what is available, or make any personal adjustments. So easy to have the taxpayers pay their way rather than put their own skin in the game to benefit themselves.

FOR THE USUAL FLAMERS: It is a simple concept...governmen aid should be available to those physically, mentally handicapped, disabled...not THE ABLE BODIED, LAZY TAKERS.

But even when discussing being an MT and the various scenarios that could occur, that doesn't mean we were talking about ourselves, we were talking about "what ifs" that can affect anyone's ability to make a living, as an MT OR working at McD's, ergo, empathy for others, not whining about ourselves

Let me tell you, there aren't a whole lot of great jobs out there. I'm still fairly young, transitioning out of MT, have a bachelor's degree, and while service-industry jobs are highly represented in the job field, professional positions for educated people are few and far between, especially if you don't live in a big city.
Oh, you mean like becoming a - highly paid MT?
[ In Reply To ..]
Come on, who doesn't think Mickey D's is looking pretty good right now?

I have even read on other MT Stars boards of people getting jobs at McD's and being much happier and more well paid!

Our job is a skilled job that used to pay well, so what happened there? Deregulation, that's what, and no labor laws worth anything. Wage theft is the norm now for suckers like us.

The way things SHOULD be, like McD's being entry level, has gone all awry because massive deregulation in the workplace favoring the vulture capitalists and multinationals who offshore and outsource and cut and cut and cut to turn a profit and there are very few guarantees in place for the worker at all, and really no fairness.

Who here has sat at your desk all day and wondered, how is this even a job? Used to be a job was work, you clocked in, did your hours you clocked out. They don't even guarantee work now, it's up to us to find it and if it takes way more than 40 hours, not their problem.

All the automation of jobs, all the profits made by multinationals, all that money goes upwards, none of it down.

I definitely think the minimum wage needs a federal bump up for starters and I would like to see more federal action against wage theft too, since our industry is a national one.
Herein lies the problem with this board.....sm - oldMT

Although this is supposed to be "A community of medical transcriptionists", there is no requirement that one be an MT to post here. Therefore, many who post here do not get what you are saying. There are many, many people who have been displaced from well paying jobs and have had to resort to minimum wage employment to feed their families, trying desperately not to ask for government help, and this is the kind of disparagement they have to endure from ignorant people who have no idea how enticing a job that pays even minimum wage is when there are NJA. Some people think that minimum wage means lazy, slacker, no ambition, no brains, worthless moochers. We MRs here know that could not be further from the truth..Fred
Several industries have gone through the same things - the MTs have with pay cuts, etc
[ In Reply To ..]
All the while pays are dwindling, NJA continues, there are still people I work with that refuse to look for any other work or retraining. They refuse to learn the VR system...then belly ache they have no work. For them, I have no patience or sympathy. They are making a choice to keep their head in the sand.

We knew years ago this industry was changing. We have had at least a decade of knowing things were never going to be "like they were".

I made the changes required as did many others. I also refused to go into debt, example (because there are some that just want flame right out of the gate): If I made $40,000/year, I did not spend $50,000 or $60,000, rack up credit card debt, take out loans, etc.

Yeah, we have all had it rough, but because I lived on a budget, did not go into debt, keeping up with the changes we all knew were coming, I fared far better than most.

I also did whatever it took, throughout my entire life, to learn all I could and have never been without a job.

Too many people only want the job they want, when they want, at the salary they want..instant gratification.

I do have sympathy for people that work for the likes of Nuance, who screw people over daily, who are somewhat stuck until they can find something else.

The only shame is not in the type of job someone has...the shame is in not taking work. Any job can be used as a stepping stone for a new job, more education, paying your bills, betterment of circumstances, lead to another position.

I have not had a car payment in 35 years. Yeah, I've had junkers, but as I saved my money, I turned them over and kept upgrading, all the while paying cash and saving for the next car. Most people will not put themselves through the discomfort of not have the newest car, best clothes, nice vacation, waiting to save enough money to pay cash for what they want...they want thins now...more's the pity for them.

And before the flamers go wild...there are people that need TEMPORARY assistance to get on their feet. It is readily available to them; however, it is not meant to be a lifestyle.
True, but others had family illness, their own illness w/o ins., natural disaster, divorce - not all starting from the same place
[ In Reply To ..]
I agree, and admit, I, too, roll my eyes that some people complain more than they work and don't appreciate what they have, I'll give you that. And it sounds great that you were able to stay afloat when so many others weren't, but many, many people even with six-figure incomes and portfolios didn't plan as well and had to liquidate.(In fact, I may want to contract you as my financial planner because you budget better than most people did!;)

Having said that, I don't know if I can go that far as to say Nuance was the only business being unfair in their business practices and who began devaluing their workers after outsourcing and EHR transitions began. We were worth less and we were treated as such, despite however cheerful we were, how much extra work we took on or how much we just appreciated even having a job. And some MTSOs just started screaming at their employees, on the phone or in caps in emails,, just to relieve their stress. And they knew they could because we needed the jobs.

But some people, from what I understand, in addition to these issues, had a chronically-ill/terminally ill family member to take care of, illness themselves with no insurance, natural disasters, divorce, car crashes, car breakdowns, or a spouse or child with an addiction or spending problems - things outside of their control that drained their income on top the economy or issues in this field. And people hanging on paycheck to paycheck, one thing goes down and it snowballs.

Not everybody is starting from the same starting place, and some people don't have the kind of family and social support that others' do. And yes, many of us could've made better life choices or planned better, and we can take responsibility for them all day, but it won't change things now, nor will it change the fact sometimes things are just beyond our control despite how well we plan or think we have life all figured out. Nobody has life all figured out, and it's usually at percisely the point you think you do, that's exactly when something comes in to humble you. And responsibility for these things is really more "percentaged", I think - this is how much I should take responsibility for, the rest on this or them.

As for my history in this field, I had a great MTSO for 5 years, then they weren't. Another went bankrupt. Now I have a great MTSO, but it honestly took a couple years of kissing a couple frogs to find them. And when I say frogs, I don't mean they weren't good enough for me and I quit, I mean I put up with everything that came my way, always made my quota and passed QA, and still got "Sorry, the check's in the mail" - 4 times, though it was too late to stop automatic bill payments coming out of my bank account, racking up overdraft that the company wasn't going to cover because they weren't even paying you. Or "Sorry, our accounts just went to EHR/dragon" or "Sorry, the accounts just went to India" or "Sorry, did you think this was a permanent job? No, it was temporary while we transitioned to EHR, we thought we told you that."

In fact, my SO has said he has never seen more sudden-change nonsense than with this business, and he's an IT systems analyst from Detroit!

He also said if he didn't witness himself how much sudden switching to EHR/Dragon and India goes on, as well as how "commodity" treated, condescended and ridiculed MTs are over minor QA mistakes (he surmises primarily because they can't see us f2f), he'd never have believed it. He also said he couldn't believe I just sat there and took abusive talk and ridicule as I did. (Hey, I waited tables and was married to the devil, nothing new to me!) However, he said would've told them he could shove a colon in for them, all right, but it ain't anywhere in a sentence, and then go work at McD's rather than take that kinda talk and nonsense and guilt trips to perform extra work for so little money.

As I said, I have a truly AWESOME company now, but don't dare ever ask one of these other "frog" companies' QA a question. EVER. God forbid, you mention you received 2 conflicting answers and just want to be clear which is correct. Even if you can prove you received 2 different answers or can take a screen shot of the ADHI BOS page verifying you were correct (which of course you would ONLY do in cases where your new score has significantly lowered your QA average, not just to be a jerk) - DON'T. DO. IT.

Because doing those things with these other "frog" companies will only result in you being nitpicked to death until you quit. Because it must ALWAYS be the MT's fault, especially if accounts are lost, over quality. It's never because of inconsistent QA or insufficient training (if we even received any at all), of course not!

***At this point, my SO is sitting next to me while writing this and would like to add something. He runs IT for a highly reputable political/governmental institution, but much of his work is supervising techs and training. He said:

"You can tell them for me that 90% of the QA people I've read the emails on, based on their communication skills alone, I would fire immediately, both for being unclear on instruction at the expense of the business and talking down to people the way they do. And roughly 90% are incapable of taking responsibility for their own errors, knowing it could be at the expense of someone else's job, but demand you take responsibility for yours for the slightest infraction. Some focus on details to the point they've lost the plot entirely and have generally power-trippy attitudes at the expense of others' jobs, it's shameful, really."

Like I said, I do NOT have that now, kissing those frogs paid off, I feel truly blessed:)

And this business didn't used to be so froggy, but after technological and outsourcing, we had less monetary value and weren't viewed as skilled labor, both in terms of money and as people. However, I think the tide is turning back. The docs themselves aren't happy with EHR and Dragon, they find it too time-consuming, so they want someone to do that for them and that's where we come in again.

High schoolers - Anon

If these jobs were for high schoolers, who works the hours when kids are in school? When I have been there in the morning or at lunch, they seem to have middle aged Hispanic women working there. Would you consider these women entry level? Who else would work these jobs? Low pay, hard work, long hours, no real skills to do anything else. Working poor do these jobs, hotel/motel maids, gardeners, food service.

Evidently you ignored this part - "Otherwise, these jobs were solely for the

and the part about partaking of the management courses, of which McDonald's has many levels of.

[ In Reply To ..]
McDonald's is not a career, please stop speaking of it as if it were. Just like anyone, those people have options. There is help available to train for another job, and there are funds available for school (Pell Grants, etc.) They may not have the skills now, but people can learn to do other things. I agree, it's a job for high school and college students because of the flexible hours. No one intends to make it their life's work.
My point exactly. Also, if they do want a career - McDonald's trains management free

Has anyone ever worked fast food? Other than waiting tables in college, hardest job I ever had. - Rather clean bathrooms for $10

[ In Reply To ..]
Take transcription, fast and perfect, but all stats x10 all day long, with only a 10-min break (though you had to officially clock out for 30 to avoid the restaurant getting in trouble for labor laws). People screaming, babies crying, angry people throwing food, drunks falling asleep in the booths and causing fights. Forget it, I'd rather clean toilets for $10 and hour, but some people really don't have many choices. Either way, nobody can survive on $10 an hour, even single people would need a roommate at that rate.

Amazing I still love people after that, but I tell you what, nothing will teach you more about people, how to deal with challenges quickly and smack you down into humility faster than working fast food and especially waiting tables. To this day, I always tip more than 20% because I know how tough it is. (Unless they're rude, which is rare, then right at 20%) Most people don't realize it, but servers only make 3.35 to 4 an hour, they survive on tips.

PS - in 2010, after a major transcription company went bankrupt, no one was hiring full-time, for anything. I had to work a temp office job 30 hours and wait tables for 30, never went on public assistance and minimum child support. However, also rarely saw my preteen :/

I've done both. I also live within my means - No credit cards, no debt, no cell phone.

outside of my mortgage. Makes a big difference when you live within the income you make.

You want something, work for it.

Most people live far above their wages, then blame everyone else for the "difficulties". Put the blame where it belongs.

Me too, 2011. Probably haven't seen the PS I added yet - and more FYIs on restaurant jobs

[ In Reply To ..]
I still struggled to make rent with 2 jobs, 60 hours, 3 hours of sleep a night, no days off, took a bus to both because couldn't afford to fix my car, and again, rarely saw my 14-year-old and NEVER went on public assistance of went out, EVER, even on offered dates because I was just too tired and saved any extra time for my daughter.

Also in 2010, a new state law was passed that the restaurant had to pay you the difference if you didn't make minimum wage per hour through your tips. So our particular restaurant got around this by writing YOU up if you didn't make minimum wage per hour through your tips, even on snowy days, as well as not reporting our state taxes properly, so we ended up owing, though making less than 20K a year). Some people fought over serving the one lone drunk at the bar. I just clocked out until I got a table, permission or not.

Do you know once, during the worst of the economy, our best server got a receipt back for a $200 bill that said, "Times are tight, sorry, can't tip" with a sad face. I thought, "Well McD's is right down the street and as hard as they have it, they still just made more than she did per hour, for the 2 hours of work she did, running herself to death, serving you 9 shots of jaegermeister, too. We can't even afford to eat here with a 50% discount."

But you know, I try to think some acknowledgement was better than none, a job is a job and many have none, right now, and maybe that was their one little yearly splurge.

Harder to let go, though, was the church family regulars that came in. This time, people were fighting NOT to take the table or drawing straws. Because instead of tipping, they always left everyone pamphlets for Jesus that looked like a $20 bill in lieu of a tip, which said I was being given a tip more valuable than cash. I felt like running after them and saying, "Hey, you left this on the table, I think you need it more than me." Or placing an order with the company that made them for 20,000 and paying for them with the all the fake $20-bill pamphlets I'd collected. But I was good, I didn't:)

I mean, I'm Christian too, but Jesus and a pamphlet ain't gonna pay my rent, either. But paying me for the hard work I just did, would be nice, which included cleaning up where your baby smashed mushy, slobber-ridden cracker crumbs on the floor, as well as your son put the salt and pepper shakers inside glasses of water and turned them upside down, and also made paper airplanes out of every single extra napkin I brought him and threw them at all the other customers and were all over the restaurant, after changing his mind 4 times between mac n cheese or chicken fingers AFTER I'd served them.

EXACTAMUNDO! - I did it too.

Why so upset? - Long gone

[ In Reply To ..]
I can't help wondering why so many posters on this board get so upset at people who are trying to make a living wage and get some government benefits when they need them yet never post or seem to get upset at the fact that the top 1% in this country have more assets than the bottom 90%. It never seems to bother you that many wealthy corporations move their headquarters offshore and pay no taxes to this country, that more people die each year in preventable industrial accidents (corporations trying to cut corners) than died on 09/11, that Warren Buffet pays a lower effective tax rate than his secretary, that the head of a hedge fund can earn 4 billion dollars a year and can take advantage of more loopholes than exist in a badly knit sweater. Never mind - this post will probably mysteriously disappear.

EXCELLENT post and information - and it's reality

[ In Reply To ..]
Not anything against people who worked hard and made their money, but I can honestly say, having lived the low-life, if I ever did I'd probably give most of it away, and have, even to my own detriment because someone had it worse, I'm just not that stingy. But then again, I don't imagine everyone else is trying to take my money and steal from me, either. Sure there's government waste, but that includes the funding for programs your party supports, too. And if that's the case, then fix the system, but don't vilify the people by automatically assuming everyone's just lazy or cheating it.

This is what I liked about Elizabeth Warren. Yeah, a possible lie about her Native-American heritage, but considering all politicians lie, that's like when people socially lie, telling someone they don't look fat when they do to be supportive. Given that most politicians are former lawyers who lied for a living, focusing on the message more than the message-bearer and voting for it is all that can be done.

And her message was some interesting ideas on private individual bankruptcy protection and tax laws that primarily protect the middle class, who are actually the majority of spending consumers, which is shrinking and creating a larger poorer class, due to lack of protection. Because let's face it, we've proven repeatedly that neither "trickle down" economics ever works to stimulate our economy, NOR does the puny government assistance given.
