teen daughter's job drama

Posted: Jul 16, 2010

My 17-year-old daughter called me on her break (she works in fast food) and said her manager had walked up behind her and slapped her arm, then scolded her about something she was doing wrong.  I could tell she had been crying, but it was 2 hours after the incident had happened.  I asked her if it just hurt her feelings or if she slapped her hard enough that it hurt.  She said it was hard enough that it stung for about 5 minutes.   How upset would you be if it were your daughter and what would you do?

BTW, my daughter's infraction was that she was supposed to be getting the milkshakes that were ordered as well as taking orders.  She usually works in the back making sandwiches or taking money in the drivethru but she was learning front register and nobody told her she was supposed to get milkshakes.  In case it matters, the manager is a 50-ish-year-old woman.

Tell her to talk to the manager - sm

Unfortunately there are a lot of people, in fast food especially, that get big heads when they are managers, as if yelling at teenagers is an ego trip. HOWEVER, that doesn't mean that she should get away with something like this. If your daughter would like to keep the peace and keep her job, I would tell her to respectfully ask to speak to this person and have your daughter apologise for not getting the milkshakes, that she will be sure to do that in the future, but from now on she would appreciate it if she kept the physical contact out of it. Perhaps this lady didn't mean to do what she did, but she needs to be told that that is not okay with your daughter. Your daughter can tell her "If you need to speak with me, or if I am doing something wrong, I would be happy to have a little meeting in the back or in the office, but please don't slap me or correct me like that in front of customers.

She could go above her managers boss, but oftentimes that just leads to more problems than it is worth in fast food.

That really sucks to be her, I've been there, done that, and am SO glad I'm past that time in my life. This is a really good learning oportunity for her, to learn how to talk to supervisors without causing friction. Being calm and deliberate is the best thing she can do.

slapping someone is assault. I would not let an adult even verbally - abuse my child. n/m

That may be but... - sm

I'm assuming this is the girls first job. It is a learning experience. No, nobody should verbally or physically assault an employee, but I would not suggest stepping in and talking to the manger on the daughter's behalf. She needs to learn how to handle conflicts in the workplace. If the manager doesn't clean up her act, then it would be time to go above her head and follow the correct procedures. This teenager is 17, not 7, she needs to learn what working is all about, which sometimes means standing up for yourself to the person in charge.

If all else fails, she can either 1) go above the managers head or 2) quit.

What is she going to do? Call the cops for assault for a slap on the arm? That teaches good conflict resolution.
Well, here is what I did. - peacelover

My husband was furious and wanted to call the police. I didn't feel comfortable with that because I didn't see it happen and I know my daughter is extra sensitive, so though she did slap her, the strength of the slap is in question. Of course the manager should not have put a hand on her at all, but I wanted to show the lady some mercy because we all need that sometimes. No one is perfect and my daughter was not physically injured.

My daughter is a very timid person. I would love to see her stand up for herself, but right now I don't think she could do it, bless her heart. She would throw up from nerves. Eventually she will get there but probably not any time soon. Call her a work in progress. (She reminds me a lot of myself when I was young. Scared of the silliest things.)

I ended up calling the store owner to inform him of what happened. He was shocked and assured me that he would talk to the mananger and make sure my daughter is not made to feel like she is going to be fired at any moment for tattling. I told him I thought she should at least get a sincere apology.

This whole situation really bothers me because my daughter has been trying to conquer her fear of the front register, which can be stressful when the line builds up. She started out with very little confidence, but lately she has been pushing herself out of her comfort zone and I was really proud of her for that. Then SLAP! She must have been so embarrassed. :(
I'm glad it got resolved - sm

I'm glad that the owner was good enough to step in without causing problems. I hope this resolves things. Tell your daughter to keep pushing herself, I was horribly shy myself when I was young, then for whatever reason I decided being an exchange student would be 'fun' when I was 16. I spent a year alone in a strange country with very few people who spoke English and was unable to speak their language for the first half of that year. Let me tell you, I came RIGHT out of my shell and really learned a lot about myself. I hope she can continue on and gain the strength over the years that she will need.

Peacelover, I can't believe that! It actually makes me feel sickish to think that somebody would do that. That was very wrong of that woman. She should/could be in a lot of trouble. It would break my heart if my child were treated like that for something as innocent as fastfood milkshakes and cash registers. I would be outraged. I am sorry you both had to deal with an assault like this. Take that woman to the cleaners - or else she'll do it again. The next child might not be so respectful. You'd be doing that woman a favor in the long run.

I would have her fill out an incident report and contact - corp headquarters with an abuse complaint.

Do I Tell A Parent Her Daughter Is Dating A Teen Who Uses Oxycontin Recreationally?Dec 30, 2009
I would certainly want someone to tell me, but you have to realize I live in an area where a lot of parents allow underage drinking.  This particular mother has given liquor to teens, however, I am quite sure she wouldn't like oxycontin and oxycodone.  I do know this for fact that the kid uses.  My son wanted me to tell the parents and then he changed his mind but after I thought about it, I feel if something bad happened, I would feel I should have said something. Please he ...

Teen With Impacted Canine ToothMar 27, 2012
We just found out yesterday that my 15-year-old son who has perfectly straight teeth, still has his left canine baby tooth and an impacted adult tooth above it.  I wasn't given much information other than he probably needs braces.  I've researched it on Google and it sounds horrible.  Braces, bracketing, putting a gold chain on the impacted tooth to pull it down, surgeries, several years of treatment.  Has anyone had anything like this at all happen?  It sounds ...

Four Gay Teen Suicides In Past 4 Weeks Following Sep 30, 2010
The common threads between the following cases are gay sexual orientation, both real and perceived, bullying and harassment, desperate parents, school officials turning a blind eye and a viral virtual environment plastered with homophobic rants in blogs, on Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and alongside broadcast media in the wake of reporting on DADT unconstitutionality and repeal.  Seth Walsh, 13, died yesterday after 9 days on life support following a successful suicide attempt by hangin ...

Teen Sent Home Over ‘Disruptive’ ShirtSep 15, 2015
Story at link, but teen sent home from school over T-shirt reading, "No one knows I'm a Lesbian." I cannot believe our country has become filled with over sensitive whiny babies who can't filter out what they don't agree with.  I've seen far worse on T-shirts than what was printed on this young lady's T-shirt.  I just don't understand how this T-shirt could be considered offensive or disruptive.     Link:  https://www.yahoo.com/parenting/ ...

Did Anyone See The New Article About The Pregnant Teen Who Sued Her Parents?Feb 19, 2013
So, 16-year-old girl gets pregnant by her 16-year-old boyfriend.  Her parents were trying to force her to have an abortion.  She refused, so they took away her car, refused to support her and she had to work two jobs (for punishment, according to her).  She went to a local law practice, who represented her, pro bono, and she won her case.  The judge ordered that her parents have no say over what she does for the entirety of her pregnancy.  He also ordered that the parent ...

Body Of Missing California Teen Possibly Found ....Mar 02, 2010
17-year-old, straight A student, out for a jog and if this is her, they have found her body buried in a shallow grave ... discarded as if she never mattered to anyone in this world! I am so sick of what is happening to our kids in this country with pedophiles, etc., some even at the hands of their own parents!!  We need to develop an "arm" of the justice system where these people can be taken out back by someone and beaten until they are bloody from head to toe, pour honey on them and allo ...

School Forces Teen To Remove U.S. Flags From Truck Sep 07, 2010
A high school student in Northglenn is upset that campus security told him to remove the large American flags flying from his pickup truck because it might make others uncomfortable. Jeremy Stoppel told 7NEWS he got a ticket at Northglenn High School last Thursday for squealing his tires. He said he deserved that ticket and deserved having his parking lot pass suspended for two weeks. But he's upset that campus security then told him he can't fly his 3 feet by 5 feet flags in the bed of ...

True Account Of 16-year-old Teen Shot At BorderNov 26, 2012
Below is an "AP" article discussing the death of a 16-year-old at the Mexican border previously discussed in posts below.  The incident actually occurred on October 10, 2012. I also agree it is horrific that a 16-year-old lost his life under any circumstances.  Unfortunately, if you read the article, the incident was not iniated because of rock throwing, but rather because a truck load of narcotics was abandoned by two individuals and the individuals were running back to Mexico.&n ...

MIL DramaJun 16, 2013

There are six children in my husband's family who have ALL taken MIL to her doctor's appointments, etc., at some point in time.  Lately though, one of hubby's sisters has been taking MIL to ALL appointments.  This sister doesn ...

Family Drama. What Would You Do?May 16, 2012
I posted last Christmas about my daughter's mother-in-law.  There seems to be no end to her drama.  She said, "New Rule.  We only spend $50 on the grandchildren for Christmas."  They are my only 2 grandchildren, and I spend much more than that on them, but I guess it makes her feel bad.  She has something like 15 grandchildren.  I flat out told my daughter that I would not let her dictate what I give my children.  She alternates visiting my daughter&# ...

The brief background of the situation is in the spring my 85yo MIL went to stay with my SIL who lives about an hour away from us because she had a Baker's cyst and was having a hard time walking. This was supposed to be only until she had an appointment for an epidural injection and then she was to have home therapy and come home. MY SIL never took her to any of her appointments. During this whole episode my MIL was w ...

A Christian Pastor’s Analysis Of The U.S. Election DramaJul 04, 2016
Is Trump good for America? I mentioned Sunday that I would speak on this next week. Unfortunately, I found that I was shoehorning this topic into my planned message. To properly present what I want to speak on Sunday, I may have to leave the Donald out of it! But let me take a minute for those that wonder and give some of my thoughts………… When I first heard that Trump (DT) was entering the race last year, I told my wife that perhaps it was a good thing for the party and A ...

"Gay Teen Worried He Might Be Christian"Jan 13, 2010
LOUISVILLE, KY—At first glance, high school senior Lucas Faber, 18, seems like any ordinary gay teen. He's a member of his school's swing choir, enjoys shopping at the mall, and has sex with other males his age. But lately, a growing worry has begun to plague this young gay man. A gnawing feeling that, deep down, he may be a fundamentalist, right-wing Christian. "I don't know what's happening to me," Faber admitted to reporters Monday. "It's like I get these weird ...

The Loss Of A DaughterJan 16, 2011
One of my best friends has a daughter (her only child) who has been fighting cancer for 10 years.   The daughter is soon to turn 43. My friend called me tonight telling me she and her son-in-law put the daughter on Hospice this past week.  Her battle is soon to come to an end. The original site of the tumor was in the left neck.  She mentioned to her dentist a numbness of the left side of her tongue.  He sent her for tests and the tumor was found.  She has been th ...

I Think My Dog May Be Jealous Of My Daughter.Dec 07, 2010
We adopted a dog about three months ago.  She was six months when we got her.  She's a chihuahua/rat terrier mix.  She is as sweet as she can be and has basically become "my" dog in that we have bonded and love each other, but recently she's started snapping at my daughter.  At night, I let the dog up on the bed with me while I watch TV and my daughter usually cuddles with me.  Lately, the dog has taken to growling at my daughter when she gets in bed.  And ...

A Step-daughterJul 08, 2014
A few months back I posted about my stepfather, who was becoming involved with a much younger woman he met at the senior center.  He turned 90 in march;  She 70 in February.  She packs on the makeup, wears tight shorts, wears hats with a feather on, which she cocks to one side of her head.  She is disgusting.  She lies and starts trouble at every turn.
