Help with my daughter's illness

Posted: Oct 4, 2011

My daughter is 38 and puts off going to the doctor like her Mom does.  A couple of weeks ago, she went to doc because she had been bleeding in-between her periods, but also very heavy menstrual cycles, to the point of being anemic.  She also was having pressure and pain in her abdomen.

She was found to have a tumor/fibroid about the size of a cantaloupe in/on her uterus.  She went for biopsy yesterday and they could not pass scope due to its size and pressure on other organs.  She is going to have a hysterectomy in a couple of weeks -- doc says laparascopic vs. open, with biopsy of tumor while trying to spare her ovaries.

My daughter is so concerned (as is her Mom) and could any of you add to what the recuperation is like and also if she will likely have open.  Any comments greatly appreciated.  There is very strong family history of cancer -- my sister with breast cancer, another sister died at 27 of cervical cancer, me with kidney cancer.   Thanks kindly for any help you have to offer.

If her doctor can't tell her whether she'll have open or laparoscopic, certainly no one on this board can.

As far as recuperation, depends on which they do. I think her doctor would also tell her that, but I think about 6-8 weeks. Any abdominal surgery is a major surgery, painful because of everything they have to cut through and put back together. If she's alone, she'll probably need help when she comes home for a week or two. She probably won't want to stand up straight and will tire easily.

Best wishes to her!

Had my hysterectomy at age 33, I had already had a tumor the size of a small grapefruit obliterate an ovary, and then it was discovered later I was pre-cancerous and had everything taken out except my other ovary. I had the open surgery (it was 22 years ago) and it was a painful recovery. It took about 6 weeks before I was driving and getting back to work. I do have to say, I felt so much better after it was all over. No more pressure, back pain, constant vaginal bleeding, you name it. I also felt emotionally better as I didn't have to worry about being sick any more.

She will need help afterward, it was painful just getting up to use the bathroom. I wish her a speedy recovery, keep us posted!

I had mine about 20 years ago also. They did not do them laporoscopic then so the recovery time was longer and much more painful. The thing that helped me the most was holding a pillow with a little pressure across my abdomen when I had to try to sit up, holding the pillow there gave me some support across the incision site. It took me about 6 weeks before I was grocery shopping and driving very far.

Anyone Have Mental Illness In Their Family? May 02, 2012
My daughter seems to be bipolar.  I say seems because she has never gone for counseling and not officially diagnosed as such.  With that being said, we do have a strong history of mental illness in our family and I know it is hereditary.  My mother had major depressive disorder and was a "mess" all her life.  She attempted suicide numerous times and was not there for us at all when we were young.  I see these signs going on in my daughter, but maybe worse.  She is m ...

Coping With Addiction/mental IllnessApr 27, 2015
My son and DIL recently went through a divorce. She has bipolar compounded by alcoholism and addictions to prescription and recreational drugs. He coped as best he could, but throughout their 6 year marriage she attempted suicide 5 times, is a cutter, and twice became wreckless with a gun to the point that authorities including a SWAT team became involved. My son is active duty AF, living on base. At one point she was banned from the base before the divorce and had to get an apartment of her own ...

The Loss Of A DaughterJan 16, 2011
One of my best friends has a daughter (her only child) who has been fighting cancer for 10 years.   The daughter is soon to turn 43. My friend called me tonight telling me she and her son-in-law put the daughter on Hospice this past week.  Her battle is soon to come to an end. The original site of the tumor was in the left neck.  She mentioned to her dentist a numbness of the left side of her tongue.  He sent her for tests and the tumor was found.  She has been th ...

I Think My Dog May Be Jealous Of My Daughter.Dec 07, 2010
We adopted a dog about three months ago.  She was six months when we got her.  She's a chihuahua/rat terrier mix.  She is as sweet as she can be and has basically become "my" dog in that we have bonded and love each other, but recently she's started snapping at my daughter.  At night, I let the dog up on the bed with me while I watch TV and my daughter usually cuddles with me.  Lately, the dog has taken to growling at my daughter when she gets in bed.  And ...

Daughter With AgoraphobiaAug 25, 2012
A very bad beginning to the weekend, which started out so hopefully.  My daughter, who is turning 21 in a few weeks, has been diagnosed with agoraphobia.  Three years ago she started college, which turned out to be disasterous becuase of the combination of living in a dorm with three binge drinkers and her anxiety disorder.  She had to transfer to a local college and commute, which she's done for the last two years, and live at home.  But the local college doesn't h ...

Teen Daughter's Job DramaJul 16, 2010
My 17-year-old daughter called me on her break (she works in fast food) and said her manager had walked up behind her and slapped her arm, then scolded her about something she was doing wrong.  I could tell she had been crying, but it was 2 hours after the incident had happened.  I asked her if it just hurt her feelings or if she slapped her hard enough that it hurt.  She said it was hard enough that it stung for about 5 minutes.   How upset would you be if it were your ...

My Daughter's School Will Tell Her Tomorrow If I Don'tDec 17, 2012

Daughter Starting CollegeApr 27, 2013
