please pray for me and my daughter

Posted: Dec 10, 2013

I made arrangements to pay part of my rent late this month.  I have to pay by the 20th, but there is no way I am going to have the funds.  If nothing changes, I will be evicted on December 23.  I don't know how to explain this to my 10 yo little girl.  How do I say Merry Christmas to her?  Today I got a notice from the MTSO where I work that my pay is being cut AND I got a notice from the IRS stating they were putting a lien on my bank account for back taxes.  I checked my account and the lien is already in effect.  My mom died this year too.  Please pray that His will be done.

If you can file for bankruptcy. All collections stop until it is discharged, even student loans. I know it's extra money that you really don't have. Check with a bankruptcy attorney if it would stop your eviction because you're going to include them too. I filed Chapter 13 because it was only $365 down, now I'm going to change to Chapter 7 and they've taken $42 per pay period until the full amount to change it is paid for, but in the meantime NO ONE can collect anything from me. I've even called around (my housing situation is less than ideal - mom owns the place and she's something else entirely). Some apartments will rent to you if you show the paperwork that you've filed bankruptcy, some won't rent to you until it's discharged. Don't panic. Make a call tomorrow and see what your options are!! I never wanted to have to file bankruptcy but it became a necessity I just couldn't ignore anymore. My life is so much better even tho it won't be discharged until Feb. It could be you could take that rent money and file the bankruptcy and be just fine - can't hurt to ask.

My PLUS loan was exempt - sm

I still owe 60k on my son's and my bankruptcy was discharged 6 years ago last month. They garnished my wages starting in January this year, 15%, has been in default for 3 years.

Way out of date information - please do some research

Especially when you're giving financial advice.

1. Student loans can no longer be discharged via bankruptcy, especially if they are private loans, except in certain, extremely rare situations. Sometimes student loans are even still owed even if the student has passed away!

2. IRS debts are also not typically discharged via bankruptcy, but there are certain exemptions which would be best addressed with a lawyer.

IRS debts - Effie

[ In Reply To ..]
IRS debts are dischargable if they are three or more years old, so if they are from 2009 or older, you can discharge them as long as you did not attempt to defraud the government.

There is no shame in bankruptcy, it exists for the purpose of giving people a fresh start...
Not all of them are, it depends - best addressed with a lawyer.
[ In Reply To ..]
And, I never said there was any shame in bankruptcy. Please don't put words in my mouth.
Shame - Effie
[ In Reply To ..]
Never said you said there was shame. I said there was no shame...Don't be over sensitive just cause you were wrong about the IRS debt. As long as she did not try to commit fraud, the IRS debt is dischargable. Never been there or done that but have been close.

Besides, reality is if she had any money she would be spending it on rent and christmas, not on a lawyer for bankrupcy right now, so while info on bankrupcy may be helpful in the future, what she needs right now is prayers and help with the rent.
Thanks, but I'm not wrong and I HAVE BTDT. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Then why'd you add the bit about shame in reply to my post? If you were addressing me in the rest of the post, it's logical to think that statement was also directed to me.

Until you HAVE gone through bankruptcy, like I have, quit telling me about how wrong and over sensitive I am.

Two other things I've had to do...go to your township trustee. They will help you, even with rent, it's the law and they're job. Also go to food pantries, community action (what it's called here) for utility assistance. The churches I've never tried but have heard good things! By all means call the IRS immediately and try to set up a payment arrangement. They should release the lien. If not, stop your direct deposits immediately or go get a prepaid card to have it deposited on.

Unfortunately, a lot of us are in your position. - DownAndOut

Re: Praying - C . Hitchens

[ In Reply To ..]
First off, if you believe in god, go back to school and get an education. I, like the rest of the brilliant people in the world, stopped believing in God when we stopped believing in all of the other fairy tales at age 3-5 (Santa, Tooth Fairy, etc).

Instead of wasting time praying which will do NOTHING put up a Paypal donate button on Facebook or ask family for help if that's a viable option for you. I would donate money because I would hate to see your little girl lose her home on Christmas.

Once you've figured out the rent thing, grow up. Stop wasting time with religion and put that time into getting a better education so you can find a better job if that's the problem. As a parent IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to make sure things like this don't happen. But as long as you're telling yourself "It's okay God will help everything work out", you'll never truly take accountability for your actions and take care of everything yourself.

There's no god. No heaven. You're never going to see your dead relatives again. They're rotting worm food 6 feet under, not in heaven. There is NOTHING when you die. Just eternal blackness. I would know, I died in Iraq for 8 minutes.

Good luck, I really hope you guys don't lose your home on Christmas. Your poor little one... I feel so bad for her. Try being a better parent and stop relying on fairy tales to work life out for you.

C. Hitchins

That has got to be the worst post I have read - on this board. Just awful.

[ In Reply To ..]
Please OP, do not believe or even read what C. Hitchins just wrote. These words are straight from the pit of hell. God is NOT a fairy tale. He is real, so is heaven, and we will see our loved ones who have believed in the Lord and asked Jesus in their hearts. She saw darkness in Iraq when she died because her soul does not belong to God. She serves the enemy (satan) in this world and it is evident in her post.

Please keep believing and trusting in God. He hears your cries. His Word is real and His promises are true. He is always on our side and will help His children.

Ms. Hitchins needs a Saviour and needs to be saved from her evil self. Shame on her for her post. What comes out of someone is what is in your heart, and her words are pure evil and not from God.

Prayer is powerful and works. It moves the hand of God. There are a lot of resources as mentioned and some very kind people have posted such.

I am praying for you and your circumstances. Many things just happen and things we did not create. It is just life and sometimes it just doesn't go our way, but God is still alive and will work great wonders in our lives and turn our circumstances around.

It doesn't sound like you make enough money - to rent an apt. Is there

[ In Reply To ..]
any way you can rent a room instead or do you family members or a friend you can stay with for right now? I don't know what state you live in but renting a room can cost as low as $300.00 a month including utilities and internet with full access to laundry and kitchen. Maybe call around your area and see what the going rate is.

Back taxes are tough. They only put a lien on your bank account because you're not paying your taxes. You can set up payment plans with the IRS, but they want their money. It would be worth a try to call them and explain your situation and see what they can do, but I bet you have gotten many notices about paying these taxes and have not, so this is a last resort for them and they may not have any other options, but do try. You never know.

Also, can you let local churches know of your situation and a lot of times at this time of year, they will send out care boxes or food to local families who are hurting.

How about contacting the Angel Tree and putting your daughter's name on the list so she can get a gift for Christmas. Or do you have any money to go to a garage sale or thrift store to get her a few things. Even $10.00 at a garage sale could buy a lot for her.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. There are resources and options that can help. Just dig deep right now for your daughter in spite of feeling so bad. You can get through this. Don't get defeated by this.

Thank you from all of us who believe - Christine

2013 has literally been the most difficult year of my life. I find, however, that it is drawing me closer to God. He is the rock and the solid foundation which will never fail. The other day I found myself singing the song that says "When the storms of life are raging, stand by me." "Thou who never lost a battle stand by me." No matter how difficult things get, We have the promise of eternal life.

being poor - Effie

[ In Reply To ..]
Being poor does not make one a bad parent... Bad things happen to good people all the time.

Bashing someone's faith is not exactly a particularly good way to go about helping them.

C, send me your address to Effielin@AOL.com. I would also like to send your daughter something and I will try to send something to help with rent also.

What size is your daughter? I may have a few things. Mine's 13 yrs old now and many outgrown things she's barely worn. Likewise, if you'd like to email me (jenniferw123@comcast.net), I'd be happy to help you with whatever options and could possibly help you with some rent as well. As I don't know yet where you live it's hard to say what is out there for you.

This whole situation is heartbreaking. The person who posts as "C. Hitchens" is trying to make a sick joke--Christopher Hitchens was a famous atheist who died in December 2011. I have to wonder who would post such a sick thing when someone is in such difficulty. I feel sorry for both the dead C. Hitchens and the person who ripped his name off to use on this board. Although I am not a particularly religious kind of guy, I do believe in God, and I will say a prayer for the OP. And finally, if you will allow me (and please take this as it is intended--brotherly concern) no one should ever post their personal e-mail address on a public board. Just as there many kind, wonderful folks in cyberspace there are, as we have seen, some who are not so much. Please be careful. Good luck to the OP.

I'm with C. H. - Val

Hoping and wishing wastes good energy. If you insist on the God thing, then God helps them who help themselves. Seek out real help, not pretend help.

If you're an atheist, that's fine, but - sm

don't give advice about God then because you don't know what you're talking about. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that "God helps those who help themselves."

"But to the poor, O Lord, you are a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat, a shelter from merciless men who are like a driving rain that melts down an earthen wall." Isaiah 25:4

Maybe you were given a second chance to turn your heart around. I can't think of any other reason you are still here. And by the way . . My family lost my dear brother in July. The nerve of you describing his body and those who have passed on in such a horrible manner.

No wonder you saw nothing but blackness - me

You obviously are an Athiest or turned into one. You could have just said Stop wasting time and doing nothing. That could have been followed by encouraging words. Instead you found your way to stabbing her wound and rubbing salt in it, C. Hitchins. You are bitter, and that is typical of people who have been through a very very rough time, which obviously, you have been. Please respect people who do have faith. A little common sense and faith, while one still has it, can be a good thing.

the time to read the prayer board..what does that tell everyone..your full of ... that's okay...god still loves you..but when you meet him..he is going to ask your "soul"..how it think it did..he doesn't judge ..you judge yourself. You are angry at yourself first, try to find out why.

I had to let my oldest son know what was going on because he is on my car insurance (to save him money - he pays me for it faithfully each month). He set up an account on IndidGoGo, a "crowdfunding platform" and funded the first $100. So far it has raised $590. I don't know how that site works or anything about it, but I am so proud of him for knowing how and where to ask for help, and for being willing to help us.

I also work for a temporary staffing service and got them to stop doing any more direct deposits into that account, so starting next week I will get paper checks for a while.

I was on hold with the IRS for 45 mins yesterday, never got through before they closed for the day and have been on hold again for 25 mins while I type this. Maybe I will get through today.

Yes, years older than the current three years are dischargable. I have a form disclosing my finances that proves I don't have the ability to pay that I can give them over the phone. I could offer to settle the entire debt for, say $100, and they could consider whether or not to accept it based on my ability (inability) to repay.

I had all the paperwork ready to go over it with them when they shut down in October. Then I got the temporary job and have been working 60 hours a week, so I just have been overwhelmed and not taking care of business like I should.

To those offering support, encouragement and prayers, thank you so much. I will send an email to the ones who requested I contact them.

To the one who spoke about not believing in prayer or God, I find it interesting that you haunt the Prayer Request board. I wonder if there isn't something in you searching for a reason to believe. I hope my testimony will touch your heart.

because it is december, maybe you can get lucky for a few months anyway. check churches, womens abuse centers, and civic groups in your area. maybe people gave donations help people you catch up with their rent and utilities during the holiday season, and the year-end tax write off gift giving. or maybe they can give you some leads of where to go for temporary help.

I have been where you are. I lost everything one time too and was even living in a tent in a campground for two weeks. It will get better even though it doesn't look like it now. This career is very difficult to keep going in, as we all know. Definitely call the IRS and tell them your situation. I finally got them to consider me temporarily uncollectable. They filled out a financial statement for me over the phone and I had to send them 3 months of bank statements to prove my income and financial state to do it. If you get a hold of them pretty quick after they take your money, you can sometimes get them to return at least some of it. The best thing with them is to keep in touch with them and keep them informed of your situation so they won't take any other money. The other thing is to file bankruptcy which will stop them from taking anything right now. Good luck to you!
