might lose my house

Posted: Jun 25, 2010

Every month I go through the same thing - I wonder if I am going to make my house payment.  There is just so much we have to pay for and obviously not enough money to pay for it all.  Sometimes I just sit and cry and ask over and over - what are we going to do, where will we go, how will we live?  I don't want to lose my home but there does not seem to be anything I can do.  Just call me sad but true mt.  Just thought maybe if I wrote it down I would feel better.  Thanks for reading.

This is going to sound preachy, but here goes. I know what you're saying. I'm having the same problems, but I KNOW God will take care of me and my family. So instead of crying start praying and be grateful for your health and the love in your household.

The one thing I can tell you is this: My brother is an accountant. He told me if you make enough money monthly to make your house payment, pay that before anything else. As an MT, I will say pay your cable bill, phone bill, and house payment. Eat lots of peanut butter sandwiches. If you have credit cards, call them up and tell them you are having financial difficulties right now and need lower interest rates or a few months to get your finances straightened out, etc. If they tell you, no, so sorry, can't do that, ask to speak to a supervisor, then if the supervisor won't help, ask to speak to the next higher supervisor, etc.

The two things you need to remember are: 1) You have to be able to work, so keeping your internet and phone working are musts. 2) You have to have a place to work, so keeping your house payment paid is a must.

I hope these help. That's what we're doing right now. It's tough out there, especially for folks like me who have passed age 40.

Good luck!!

Recently in same situation. Long story. - see very very long message

A year ago, I was in a similar situation, in danger of losing what I think of as my retirement home. I was perhaps more fortunate than many in that I don't have children. I was losing everything through my own stupidity (long story involving abusive alcoholic and my own co-dependent idiocy). The foreclosure notice had come, I was hiding my car to prevent it from being repo'd.

I had lost my full-time job and had a part-time that was paying maybe $800 a month. My mortgage payment was $680, car payment $353, car insurance $180, internet $75. Obviously the ledger books were far from balanced.

I went into a 'funk' for a couple of months, crumbling under the stress of a dangerous relationship and the financial hole I had dug myself into, feeling increasingly sorry for myself. Then one day I just kinda kicked myself in the butt and got to work trying to set things right. After months of ignoring the mortgage company, I called them and was able to get into a modification. I borrowed money from my kids (how humuliating that was) to make a car payment and get my TV hooked up).

My modification brought my mortgage payment down to $400 for six months. The single car payment was enough to get me at least breathing room for about three weeks. After requesting and getting more lines at my first job, I also got a second full-time one. I switched to a diet rich in Ramen noodles, tuna, and eggs, sustained by gallons of coffee.

At the end of six months, I was denied making the modification permanent because now with the second job, I was making too much money.

But the six months did get me enough breathing room that I was able to catch up on stuff. This winter when I had to buy propane, I had the money to pay for it then and there. My car is completely caught up (and only has 2 payments left). I was able to put up a fence in the backyard for my dogs and horse. I was even able to fly back to the west coast to see my daughter graduate and still give her a couple hundred dollars for a graduation present.

So talk to your mortgage company about a modification. Once you are approved, get yourself a second job if at all possible. Assuming they're a family unit, you will obviously need their cooperation. And keep plugging.

You may, though, want to consider allowing them to foreclose. Obviously there are a lot of people doing it, and if there really is no way that you can see yourself ever being able to afford the house you're in (such as adjustable rate mortgage that has adjusted into the stratosphere), maybe it would be better to allow it to foreclose (there have been stories where people have lived for a year rent-free in a home in the process of being foreclosed) and move on your terms rather than waking up one day to find the sheriff has put a lock on the door.

We rented our "guest room" out several times! - Hayseed

It's absolutely terrifying, isn't it? Probably one of the worst experiences, aside from losing a loved one. We made it over one hump by doing just that...we rented our guest room.

I never had a roommate in my life, but my husband did, and I pretty much let him take the lead in interviewing people. I posted an ad on CraigsList specifically stating what we had to offer, what the rent was (we agreed on a week-to-week amount), what was included, and what wasn't allowed (no pets, no smoking in the house, no drugs, etc).

We had very few applicants, just because we are so rural, but the ones we did have were FANTASTIC roomies. All were our age (40ish) and were going through personal crises of their own and were only here temporarily. It worked out great though and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. We are still friends with all our roomies and support each other however we can.

Good luck to you. You are so not alone in this.

House Leaders Plan Separate House VoteMar 20, 2010
Democrats edged closer to finding 216 lawmakers to back a landmark health-care bill Saturday, as party leaders and White House officials were working on an executive order that they hope will win over a substantial number of antiabortion Democrats. The House Rules Committee continued its session on the third floor of the Capitol, where the panel is tasked with setting the terms of Sunday's floor debate. House leaders have decided to take a separate vote on the Senate version of the healt ...

Lose A Job, See What You GainApr 06, 2014
Had a nice little once-a-month job (hmm, that sounds like I get paid to menstruate, but no that's not it LOL) - lost it - it was kinda painful, 'cause I liked my coworkers. But then, I've had time to check out a new writing group, AND go to my painting group - they were wondering what happened to me - let's just say "arctic vortex." Then my heating bill was insanely low, it will be low this month also, so I'm gonna make it (by the skin of my teeth as they say). So, th ...

Need To Lose Baby WeightFeb 28, 2012
I had a baby 2 years ago and I have not worked out a day since then (bad I know).  Now, with summer coming up, I need to tone up and get in shape.  Anyone have a good workout they can share to lose the baby weight.  I've got about 10 pounds to lose, which isn't bad, but I'm so out of shape and kind of puffy, no muscle!  I really don't want to join a gym as I have a treadmill and some weights but really have no idea what kind of workout to do. ...

Obama To America-I Win, You Lose.Mar 22, 2010
"Give me tyranny and give me debt" has replaced “Give me liberty or give me death.” With his health care holy war, President Obama is sending America at least 10 messages since taking office: 1. I win; you lose. 2. My will; not the will of the people. 3. Government of Obama, by Obama, for Obama; not government of the people, by the people, for the people. 4. Corrupt House rules and autocracy; not play by the rules and democracy. 5. “I’ll tread on you” now step ...

Why The Tea Party Will Cause Republicans To LoseApr 19, 2011
It isn't possible to have an actual discussion with a tea party member. They love slogans and one-liners, but that's as far as their 'thinking' goes. They are shallow thinkers. The one thing about this, whether you think it is a good thing or a bad thing, is that they are causing the Republican Party to lose credibility. Decent people have been sucked into it temporarily, but if they are able to think, they eventually have enough of it. The Birther movement is taking the Tea ...

GOP Senate Will Lose Another Of The Reasonable Few.Jan 28, 2013
step down after next year. He's way too conservative for me, but apparently entirely too responsible and independent to suit the teapartiers and their backers. "In his retirement announcement, Mr. Chambliss expressed confidence that he would have beaten such foes, even as he voiced his frustration that compromise was increasingly impossible in Washington. “I have no doubt that had I decided to be a candidate, I would have won re-election,” he said. “Instead, this is ...

Best Thing We Can All Do Is Lose The Party StereotypesOct 11, 2014
It's easy, cheap - and usually wrong - to think of political parties (and hence, anything or anyone related to them) in terms of simplistic stereotypes and labels, which are almost always flattering with regard to our own party and insulting when it comes to others. I see people here hurling insults at one another - conservatives are this, liberals are that - based on these caricatures which bear little if any relationship to the truth.  The political parties themselves encourage this ...

CBO Now Says 10 Mil Will Lose Employer Health Plans Under ObamaCareJan 28, 2015
The Congressional Budget Office now says ObamaCare will push 10 million off employer-based coverage, a tenfold increase from its initial projection. The "keep your plan" lie just gets bigger and bigger. The latest CBO report is supposed to be a big win for the Obama administration because the projected costs are 20% below what the CBO first projected in 2010. But the CBO report also shows that ObamaCare will be far more disruptive to the employer-based insurance market, while being far less ef ...
