Cat owners - should declawing be illegal?

Posted: Feb 17, 2010

was reading an article about cats & dogs in West Hollywood, and saw this snippet:

It became the first city in the country to prohibit cat declawing in 2003, a measure that has since spread to dozens of other cities, including Los Angeles.

I didn't realize declawing is illegal. Why is it? Do you agree?

declawing - cat lover

[ In Reply To ..]
I did a lot of research on this before having my two newest cats declawed. I was seriously considering not doing it with these two, because they were such good cats, and very even-tempered. However, they still scratched things inadvertantly, like our wooden headboard, our stair rails and banisters, windowsills, things like that. My husband insisted, so I gave in.

The reason behind the laws is that some people believe it is extremely painful/abusive/traumatic for cats, and that it takes something from them that is central to their wellbeing. And to be honest, I can't say that might not be true. Once a cat has healed, they seem like they never miss the claws, but some say that some cats never recover, or adopt a different temperament after being declawed.

I do believe, though, that if it were illegal everywhere not as many people would want to keep cats indoors as pets; what would the cat population be like then? I think a well cared for, declawed cat is going to be happier and healthier than a claw-having cat that fends for himself out in the elements!

hunting dogs - declawing

[ In Reply To ..]
Some hunting dogs get the single claws removed from the upper front legs because they tear when they are running in the woods. I think this is a California thing. If you domesticate an animal, they have to be domesticated to live in your house without tearing it up.

P.S. Lots of people say fixing boy dogs takes away from their natural state and traumatizes them.....

Heck from there you could go on and on!

Thats different. Its the "dewclaw", and they dont have - to walk on it - it doesnt touch - sm

the ground. They still have their other, normal, fully functional toes.

There are non-traumatic ways to cut down on cat-scratching. More cat-scratchers, for openers, though I'm sure a person who wants a "Home and Garden"-worthy house probably doesn't want those, either. You can also get "Soft Claws" - pretty colored (or clear) plastic caps that are glued onto the claws. A bit of a pain for the owner, perhaps, but no pain to the cat. You replace them as they shed their claws. Trimming works best for me. I just hold the cat on my lap, and gently cut the nails. If one were really anal about it, they could then be filed round, but I find clipping is more than enough.

I've had 2 rescue cats that were declawed by former owners, and it's just so sad. When they try to play, they can't even catch a toy or a string.

Furniture can be covered. Carpet can be replaced. Wood can be re-stained or repainted. I think if someone feels they must have a "perfect" house, they shouldn't have animals.

I think so. I have 1 declawed cat (a rescue that - came to me that way), and - sm

I feel so sorry for her. Her little front feet are so sensitive. Sometimes she'll limp a couple steps for what seems like no reason, then she's okay. She has to be submissive to my other cat because that one has claws, and the clawless kitty knows she's at a major disadvantage.

It also affects her balance. She hates walking on soft surfaces (like fluffy down comforters, or pillows) because her foot can't spread out and help her balance.

She falls a LOT. When she jumps from one place to the other, if she slips, she has no claws to catch her. She's fallen off tables, the couch, windowsills, and has fallen into the wastebasket and the washer. I keep the toilet covers down all the time for that reason, but one time when I wasn't quite fast enough, she almost fell into the toilet, but I was able to grab her in the nick of time.

The other night she was sitting by me watching TV, and I was petting her legs and her front paws. You can FEEL the square-shaped, chopped-off digit where the entire distal phalanx (the one that houses the claws) has been amputated. No wonder her feet are tender - the edges of the toe stump are not smooth, they're jagged.

For that reason ALONE, declawing should be illegal.

Awww... your poor kitty. It sounds like she had a hack job! I do know there are at least two different methods of declawing, with one being more invasive/damaging that the other. Incidentally, my calico fell into the toilet BEFORE she was declawed! I haven't noticed any increased clumsiness since their declawing, and their toes don't feel the way you described at all.

I had a cat about a year and a half ago, right before I got my current two, who had to be put to sleep because she started attacking people who came into our home. There was never a doubt about getting her declawed, because she had a very aggressive personality from the start, and trust me, my cats are spoiled and are NOT messed with or tormented at all. I'm extremely strict about that and everyone knows it. The last attack, that actually prompted the putting to sleep, was so bad I thought we were going to have to take this person to the ER. She had cuts all over her head, bites on her arms, scratches on her face, and this was all done in about 30 seconds with back claws and teeth. I shudder to think what she would have done if she still had her claws! I know that is an extreme case, and it traumatized me deeply at the time, but cats are capable of doing serious damage if they want to, and without provocation.

Now, the two I have now are the sweetest things in the world. I think you could step on them and they wouldn't bite...but just sayin'.

I have no way of knowing if it was a bad job or not. - s/msg

Might have been a less-than-reputable vet.

Still, the cat is 10 or 11 years old, so it's also possible that maybe the "sharpness" of the ends of the joints is due to osteoarthritis setting in at the point of injury. I have no way of knowing how long ago she was declawed, but my guess is when she was quite young. Her former owners had her for 8 years, then gave her up due to foreclosure.

One thing I'm very lucky with, is that she is litter-box-perfect. Some cats stop using their box after declawing because it hurts to dig, and because during the healing process you're not supposed to use litter, anyway, but newspaper or an empty pan instead. That can get some weird habits started.
litter box after declawing - cat lover
[ In Reply To ..]
True that! My calico (not the brightest bulb, if you know what I mean, but the sweetest thing) didn't take well to the newspaper. She did go on the floor several times during that period. She is good now, but you know how it goes...once that smell gets on the floor (and my previous crazy cat had already tainted it when she went into heat before I could get her spayed), all bets are off! But I take it in stride, and they're staying with me till they die, now that I have them.

Come to think of it, one of my current cats peed on the floor when she went into heat, also. Both she and my last cat went into heat freakishly early, and something about that makes them want to mark their territory, I guess.
Have you tried "Natures Miracle" to clean up messes? - s/msg
[ In Reply To ..]
My calico is smart, but something happened to her when she was a kitten, and now she's hard-wired to go on linoleum. That's a whole 'nother LONG story, but now I lock the cats out of the kitchen, and everything else is carpet. I keep 1 or 2 litterboxes in the bedroom closet, and one in the bathroom in a corner behind the tub. Once in a while, the calico will "miss" and pee on the rug. I blot as much as possible with paper towels, dilute a tad by scrubbing with a wet sponge, and then soak it with Nature's Miracle. It's an enzymatic cleaner where the enzymes eat the urine crystals.

maybe the declawing caused her aggressive behavior - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I am totally against declawing, what a torture.
Cats need their claws, also psychologically, this is their embedded defense system. Even if they do not have to use them often, living indoors, taking those away from them makes them feel defenceless, helpless and vulnerable.
I am sure that this procedure changes their personalities.

People who cannot accept a cat with claws as a pet and love their furniture more than the cat should not adopt one.

There are "scratching posts" built for them and cats can be trained to use them instead of scratching up the furniture, etc.....

Declawing should be illegal around the world.

Same goes for cutting the vocal cords of dogs to stop their barking...

Crimes!

declawing - cat lover
[ In Reply To ..]
No, more like her aggressive behavior caused the declawing! And she didn't just tear up furniture, she tore us up. She would literally come up behind me and climb up me, clawing my skin the whole way up. Her property damage was mostly from her teeth, anyway. She ate the carpet, ate string, rubber, plastic, opened doors (to get to more stuff to eat and tear up), ate clothes, ate strings off of clothes and bathing suits; you name the bad behavior, she did it. If she got in the pantry, she would actually get boxes down and chew them open. And remember, she could open doors, and that one didn't lock. Oh yeah, then she threw up whatever she had eaten later. I used to say she had pica. She was so bad it was almost comical! Whenever I went up the stairs, I had to look behind me the whole way up or she would bite my ankles and the backs of my legs. It's amazing the stuff you learn to live with once they break you in. I'm STILL not quite used to the fact that I don't have to be on guard with my current cats, and don't have to shut and lock every door in the house so they can't get in.

Still, I loved her and was totally prepared to put up with all of it until she started attacking and hurting people.

I've had both done to my cats. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
My first cat was a calico, and she lived to be 20 years old. When I got her, she was a stray kitten my cousin had taken in. I was only 23 and didn't know a thing about cats; had never owned one before. I thought she was cute, so I took her home with me. This was in 1985, and I just don't think there was a lot of controversy about declawing then. Our vet spayed and declawed her, and as I recall, he basically asked, "Is she going to be an indoor cat." I said yes, and that meant no claws. When she died, we adopted another cat. She has the sweetest temperament and rarely does she show or use or claws on anything. Since she is so easygoing, she does not fuss when I clip her claws. I keep them short, and she causes no damage in the house. I've also been able to train her to stay off surfaces like tables and countertops (I hate cats walking where food is prepped or served.)

I will say that our first cat did not dig and cover when she used her litter box. I'm pretty sure that was a result of the declawing. And, our current kitty is a bit clumsy even with her claws intact. She falls off of the back of the couch and window sills on a regular basis.

I definitely wanted to keep my cat's claws intact, if possible. But I would have had her declawed if she caused significant damage in the house.

Absolutely! It's mutilation pure and simple - smokethis

[ In Reply To ..]
It's similar to amputation of a part of their defense system.

To those who disagree: How would YOU feel if someone cut off the tips of your fingers?

Sure u'd survive and learn to live without them, but you'd have been mutilated. Period.

ban declawing! - hazelbrigz

[ In Reply To ..]
I ignorantly had this done to one of my cats many years ago and will never, ever do it again! My poor cat had difficulty walking for months after. Yes, he was an indoor cat, but on the 2-3 occasions that he accidentally got out, he was totally defenseless, and I had voluntarily made him that way! Never again -- get a scratching post or deal with the furniture. It is definitely mutilation!

Ban declawing -- You are absolutely right! - Brenda

[ In Reply To ..]
No justification for declawing whatsoever. It is mutilation simply for the convenience of a selfish owner. If one can't deal with a cat's natural makeup (i.e. claws) then one should not have a cat. And it is entirely possible that even the best-cared-for indoor cat just might accidentally get outside and how does it defend itself? Absolutely --declawing should be made illegal. How hypocritical to claim to ''love'' animals but then to do inhumane things to them, like declawing cats or ''crate-training'' dogs (politically correct term for putting them in a cage). There should be a ''golden rule'' for animals (do to them what you would like done to you if you were the helpless animal.)
Is crate training bad? - I had no idea.
[ In Reply To ..]
I don't own dogs, and never will. (Too much work for me!) But good friends of ours have three dogs who are crated all day while the owners are at work or when visitors are over. The dogs bark constantly when we're there, and the whole house positively reeks of dog. I'm not really enthusiastic about visiting them because of that.
It's not - good grief
[ In Reply To ..]
There's nothing wrong with crate training a dog. It's much better than letting them run crazy in the house when they're little and learning the ropes, so to speak, when they can get hurt. Because regardless of how vigilant you are, you can't watch them 100% of the time even if you work at home.
My dog loves her crate - its like her own little room
[ In Reply To ..]

She has three pillow-places around the house (not including my daughter's dirty clothes pile), and her crate is just another of her places.  She often will meander in there on her own for a nap or just to chill out.

Her crate is definitely where she goes when she is stressed or frightened, such as when there might be shouting in the house (the afore-mentioned daughter is a teenager lol), or when it is thunder and lightning out.... it is her safe place, tucked in a corner between the back of the couch and a wall, like a cave, and we all know dogs love that den/cave feeling.

We have never used the crate as punishment .. have always made it an inviting place to be with a soft bed and toys and treats, and currently in there is an old T-shirt of the kidlet (the ultimate comfort, having the scent of her "person" right there).

Luckily I don't often have to put her in there for long periods of time, but if I am going to be gone from the house longer than about 5 hours, I do put her in there so she she doesn't pee/poo in the house... she won't "go" in her crate.  And all I have to do is give her the same set of words (our own personal crate command) as I walk to the crate, and she just doodles right over and in and lays down.

Crates are great, any dog training book or website will tell you that.  I would never have a dog without one.

What about dogs ears and tails routinely removed - for fashion sake?

[ In Reply To ..]
People routinely mutilate dogs - cut doberman and boxer ears in half, chop off their tails - all for really no reason except they like the way it looks. Society accepts the mutilation of housepets and has for decades. This is nothing new and the people doing it claim to be animal lovers.

Or their barkers removed - like my neighbor did to his Boxers

Removing voice box - angelface46
[ In Reply To ..]
This is one of the most cruel and inhumane things people can do to dogs, and it ranks right up there with declawing, chopping off tails, among others. It makes me furious to think that a dog owner would do something so cruel. How would they like it someone decided to yank something out their throats in order to keep them from talking, chopping off a piece of their behinds, cropping their ears or other horrible things that are being done. These poor innocent creatures have only us to protect them.
I rescued a dog from - de-barking
[ In Reply To ..]
Maggie loves to bark. See a bird flying by - bark at it. See a worm on the sidewalk - bark at it. Not in a mean way - joyfully. As in "Aha - a new friend!" or "Come out and play!"

Family said they had to "have her debarked or give her away". To debark Maggie would be to remove about 80% of her joy in living. Since I know there are gentle ways of reducing or controlling barking behavior, I took her.

Yeah, she still barks, but not excessively, and not incessantly. I've just gradually redirected her, but only to the extent that she's not annoying the neighbors or keeping them up. Unfortunately, I know that since Maggie was 10 when I got her, my time with her is short, and I know that I'll miss her bark when it's gone.

It should be illegal - just me

[ In Reply To ..]
I didn't realize it was illegal either and I'm glad it is. It is the equivalent of a person having their fingernails ripped off. Anyone who does this is sick and inhumane. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to torture a poor animal in that way. I cringe and tears form thinking of what a poor little animal is going through when someone does that to them.

Declawing - landroverlady

I used to be a vet tech and it was my job to do these and I probably did 5 to 8 a week. If it is done as a kitten, less than 3 months old, they have no adverse reaction from it. If they are older though, it can be very painful for them and I hated doing older cats. Technically it is just as easy but their recovery time/bleeding, etc. is much worse. I have 5 now and they are not declawed but did have one in the past that was and could kill a bird even better than his "siblings" that had claws. I think it really depends on who does the declaw as to the outcome. Some just fly through and leave a portion of the nail which can grow back partly. I was taught to remove the entire claw digit and I have to say I never had one return with a problem. Did see some back hack jobs from other places though.

declawing - cat lover

[ In Reply To ..]
I still maintain that if people didn't have the option, there would be a lot of cats either dumped, put to death, abused, etc. You can't know how your cat will behave until you've had them for awhile. If you can't stop a negative clawing behavior, what then? Say what you want, but not all declawing procedures are awful, tortuous ordeals. If you do your research and go to a reputable, caring vet, it doesn't have to be terrible. My cats spent two nights at the hospital afterwards, were spayed at the same time so no unnecessary anesthesia. I sprung for extra pain meds and IV fluids for both of them during their recovery.

People can criticize all they want, about how people (like me?) *claim* to love their cats, but my cats are very happy, loved, and well cared for. And, they're way too happy here to even stick a paw out the door! They don't even feel the urge.

Seriously...I wonder how many cats are abandoned and piling up in shelters, or worse, in those states in which declawing is illegal.

Does everyone take the care with their pets that I do? No. But that is true for owners of cats with claws, as well. If you want to rail against something, direct it at animal cruelty, negligence, and abuse.
I am railing against animal cruelty which declawing is - tristen
[ In Reply To ..]
You make some valid points above about ignorant people and the like, but that still does not justify amputation, i'm sure if you were to have asked your two cats before having this done if they would like the ends of their toes cut off they would have said a resounding "h*ll NO". I have six cats one of which is ferral to this day, and have four scratching posts in my place and none of my furniture is scratched, there is no reason to declaw, unless as someone said above, you do not have the patience to train them to scratch their own furniture. I think most people who declaw are just arguing to make themselves feel better for what they surely know is mutilation especially as a transcriptionist with some medical knowledge, plus a stay at home worker can much more easily train a cat to not scratch than one who works out of the home. Your cats do seem well cared for, too bad they don't have the end of their toes though.

Well, we're just going to have to agree to disagree. Or disagree to disagree, or whatever. I know that people who feel strongly about this subject won't be swayed, and I actually agree with some of your points. In any other area, I'm pretty much a freak about not hurting animals; not just physically, but emotionally. Heck, I wouldn't let my kids get their own hamsters out of their cages unless I was supervising, and NEVER if they had a friend over (too many kids think they're toys to toss around). And yes, I have actually taken both a hamster and a rat to the vet when they were sick. Hamster had a pouch infection, LOL. Got made fun of for that one, especially when people found out she was on antibiotics!

That being said, if my cats weren't declawed they wouldn't be living here, and probably wouldn't be quite as loved and spoiled as they are. That's just the simple fact of the matter. I think some cats are harder to train than others, and I suck a training anything if you want to know the truth of the matter. I guess I don't command enough respect. And even though I work at home, I have to go b*lls out just to make a decent paycheck, so...yeah.

More than 800 illegal immigrants from countries of concern who were set for deportation were mistakenly granted U.S. citizenship because the Department of Homeland Security didn’t have their fingerprints on file, according to an internal audit released Monday. Back in the 90s, it was selling nuclear secrets to China, and schmoozing with high powered Chinese individuals, caught up in real estate deals, fundraising schemes and the like. So it is ...
