Would you get her house cleaned?

I took my grown daughter out the other night for an early birthday present. She asked for a laptop computer for her birthday/Christmas present- said it could cover both. When hubby and I got over there to get her, her house was like a pig sty. I could not believe knowing we were coming that she would not have tried to halfway straighten it up.

She left for vacation today, will be gone a week. I kidded her yesterday and told her what I was getting her for Christmas was a good thorough house cleaning. She laughed about this, did not seemed upset in the least. Do you think I should get her house cleaned while she is gone and surprise her when she returns? What would you do?

No, mamma, I would not have your grown daughter's house cleaned while she is gone on vacation. It is obvious that living like that does not bother her. If you have it cleaned for her once, what are the chances that everytime it gets like this again, she will expect you to bail her out? She will clean it herself, I bet, when she can't stand it any longer.

I have 3 kids 3-5 and 1 guy that doesnt clean up. I have a 3rd shift job which takes up most of my time and I am pooped! Anyways, when I was pregnant was the worst my home had ever been! All 3 times in fact. My mom cleaned my house all 3 times for me so when I came home from the hospital it was spotless. I never asked her to and she just did it. I was embarassed and thankful at the same time. It didn't even look like my house! I could walk through the door! Plus the table tops didn't have junk all over them! Unfortunately I still can't teach my family to pick up after themselves and every 4.5 seconds someone puts something in the floor so right now my house is semi-cleaned. I think you should do it if you really want to! Then you can bust her butt (verbally) when you go back over and it is dirty again. Maybe she just got so far behind in cleaning that she feels like she can't get out so when it is halway straightened up that it is actually an improvement of what is use to be. I do that all the time! My mom lets me know the day she leaves that she is coming over and I clean up as much as I can before she gets here. Then when she is here she comes in and says, "Didn't you clean at all?"

I wouldn't bother cleaning it. She obviously doesn't care. I had a neighbor whose house was always a mess. When a group of us girls went out to dinner one night, someone asked her about it and she said she doesn't see the mess. When it gets so bad her husband can't stand it anymore, HE cleans it. This from a stay at home mom. I don't know how she gets away with it!

It's true it won't teach her anything, but gifts are not meant to teach but to show affection. And remember it's a gift, not an assignment, so if she doesn't keep it clean (and she probably won't), no lectures allowed!

She may live like this all the time, in that case you are cleaning it up for *you* not her, and she will likely not be very appreciative.
