Targeting legal gun owners

Posted: Feb 14, 2013

Illegal gun owners are probably laughing their heads off: Missouri Democrats introduced an anti-gun bill which would turn law-abiding firearm owners into criminals. They will have 90 days to turn in their guns if the legislation is passed. Here’s part of the Democratic proposal in Missouri: 4. Any person who, prior to the effective date of this law, was ***LEGALLY*** in possession of an assault weapon or large capacity magazine shall have ninety days from such effective date to do any of the following without being subject to prosecution: (1) Remove the assault weapon or large capacity magazine from the state of Missouri; (2) Render the assault weapon permanently inoperable; or (3) Surrender the assault weapon or large capacity magazine to the appropriate law enforcement agency for destruction, subject to specific agency regulations. 5. Unlawful manufacture, import, possession, purchase, sale, or transfer of an assault weapon or a large capacity magazine is a class C felony. http://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2013/02/missouri-democrats-intruduce-legislation-to-confiscate-firearms-gives-gunowners-90-days-to-turn-in-guns/;

that's not what it says. - doe

There is nothing in that legislation that makes "law-abiding firearm owners into criminals". Rather, it is legislation surrounding SPECIFIC firearm types and SPECIFIC ammunition. I am sure you understand that. In fact, you understand it so well, you needed to obfuscate the meaning of the legislation to make your point.

Oh man. That's whacky. - Quoted directly from the bill as written.

You still don't get it? When Toyota has a recall, does it mean we can't drive cars at all? The legislation is about assault weapons and large capacity magazines - not firearms of all kinds.
Now to attack legal car owners. - buck

Am I understanding this right? This post is referring to guns which WILL BE illegal under this bill (i.e. in future)?

If so, OP you either don't comprehend English well, or you think we are stupid here.

PRIOR TO THE EFFECTIVE DATE OF THIS LAW would be a glaring hint.

That's not how I took her post - Read her 1st sentence

"Illegal gun owners are probably laughing their heads off:"

I think she saw the irony in legislating gun laws for legal owners as opposed to those illegal ones.

You have to take the entire post into consideration:

Illegal gun owners are probably laughing their heads off:

Note the colon and what *follows*...

Missouri Democrats introduced an anti-gun bill which would turn law-abiding firearm owners into criminals. They will have 90 days to turn in their guns if the legislation is passed.

This is misleading and false, and it IS part of the original post. and note the way the post itself is worded.

Yours truly,
Fairminded Snark
No, read it again. Prior to the effective date of this law - means those who LEGALLY owned one of the guns list
[ In Reply To ..]
that they'll be banning must TURN THEM IN WITHIN 90 DAYS OR BE IN VIOLATION OF THE LAW and it would be considered a Class C felony.

Well, duh. - just me

Isn't that how new laws work? If people fail to comply, they're now breaking the law?

They don't know how new laws work. They see the word "legally" and come loaded for bear (if you will).

Well, duh, when someone owns something that's legal, then a government - body decides they will make it ILlegal to own

[ In Reply To ..]
that same item that was obtained legally in the past, therein lies the scary part. It means the government can make anything their little heart desires illegal, even it it was legal prior to their law.

Example: Ford cars and trucks. If the government wanted to make sure GM didn't go under, they could have made Ford cars and trucks illegal. Yes, that's a stretch but it could happen if the government starts thinking like Missouri is doing.

By the way, this also would mean that if the Missouri law passes, those who own the type of weapons in the law WOULD BECOME CRIMINALS. Who buys an item and then give it up willingly without reimbursement for it?

AND, no solution Congress or Missouri, NY, or any other state banning certain guns will stop any criminal from getting their hands on guns. You should know that. Look at Chicago. It has one of the most strict gun laws in the country AND the HIGHEST gun deaths because they're mostly all gang related.

It was stated today that one of the Mexican drug cartels are trying to take over the city with the drug wars going on between gangs. Do you really think they, or any other gang, will turn over their guns if banned. The guns they're using right now are probably illegal by Chicago standards, so what makes you think a federal law banning certain weapons will be any different?

Our government can't even stop the cartels from crossing the border with their drugs, guns, and coyote illegals.

Any one who is for banning guns or ammo aren't thinking and that includes those in CONGRESS. They think it will solve a problem, but it won't; yet, they insist they are right and this will cure all the mass shootings and even some minor shootings. Better get their heads screwed on tight. I think they lost a lot of brain cells over the past 20 years.

This is nothing new, for something to - become ILlegal.

[ In Reply To ..]
And yes, the people who don't abide DO become criminals, and they do it by choice.

the government cannot do that - doe

[ In Reply To ..]
Your example is more than a stretch. It could never happen. Never. The government cannot interfere with private industry that way.

But wait. You probably are thinking something like: "But he's doing it right NOW with the gun manufacturers." But that's also not correct, for gun manufacturers are not going away.

Alcohol. Tobacco. Firearms. There is a reason these commodities are regulated. They can be dangerous, and are for mature audiences. From time to time, we review our regulations and change them. We do this with tobacco and alcohol. We are now doing it with firearms.

I'm still upset that my cocaine-laced - Coca-Cola is now illegal.

[ In Reply To ..]
Turned me into a criminal, the fascists.

Illegal gun owners don't care - Fanatical Hypocrite

[ In Reply To ..]
one way or the other. It doesn't downgrade the number or armament of the police and other law enforcement, which is the number one way in which the law - and through it our personal safety - is enforced.

Also the vast majority of self-defense shootings involved handguns as those are really the perfect self-defense weapon. In cases where an assault style weapon was used in self-defense, it was unlikely that the design of the gun was specifically what saved the person. In other words, very few times do you ever hear "Good thing I had a 30 bullet clip when those 30 guys attacked me." That and most normal people don't walk around with a carbine stuffed down their pants trying to act all nonchalant. Handguns are concealable and thus more useful against criminals.

Next, the Republican Party and Tea Party have been rallying for states rights. States should decide all the laws and the government should stick to invading places most people can't find on a map. So if the law doesn't pass, it was a victory for the anti-gun crowd. If the law does pass, it's a victory for Missouri and state's rights. It's win-win for Republicans.

Finally, this law isn't going to pass. Democrats in the Missouri legislature fill the same role as pandas in the zoo. They're just there to look at and it takes all our effort to keep them from going extinct.

Sadly, the 18 month investigation into the IRS targeting of conservative groups isn’t over, and it may be worse than anyone thought. A federal judge has broken loose more emails that the DOJ had surely hoped would never surface. The picture it reveals isn’t pretty. The documents prove that Lois Lerner met with DOJ’s Election Crimes Division a month before the 2010 elections. It has to be embarrassing to the DOJ, which may not be the most impartial one to be investigating the IRS. In fac ...

What Small Car Owners Should Know About Car InsuranceApr 14, 2015
Americans are known around the world for their love of big cars. Many wouldn’t be caught dead behind the wheel of one of those little cars you’re more likely to see on the streets in Europe. But as gas prices continue to climb higher and more Americans become concerned with the environmental impact of larger, less fuel-efficient cars, small cars are starting to grow in popularity even here. What many haven’t considered is that smaller cars tend to have a lower safety rating. For example in ...

Should Polygamy Be Legal?Aug 05, 2011
