Google = BIG BROTHER

Posted: Jan 25, 2012

Effective 03/01/2012 (significant numerology, but of course nobody here knows that), Google will begin collecting even MORE data on users of its signature search engine (started with CIA seed money), GooTube, and Gmail. Significantly, USERS CANNOT OPT OUT.

"Google will soon know far more about who you are and what you do on the Web.

The Web giant announced Tuesday that it plans to follow the activities of users across nearly all of its ubiquitous sites, including YouTube, Gmail and its leading search engine.

Google has already been collecting some of this information. But for the first time, it is combining data across its Web sites to stitch together a fuller portrait of users.

Consumers who are logged into Google services won’t be able to opt out of the changes, which take effect March 1. And experts say the policy shift will invite greater scrutiny from federal regulators of the company’s privacy and competitive practices."

Fortunately, America still has a few critical thinkers left -- unlike most of the MTs here -- who don't drink the establishment Kool-Aid and swallow the spin.  Civil libertarians and consumer and privacy advocates are, of course, very upset:

"But consumer advocates say the new policy might upset people who never expected their information would be shared across so many different Web sites.

A user signing up for Gmail, for instance, might never have imagined that the content of his or her messages could affect the experience on seemingly unrelated Web sites such as YouTube.

“Google’s new privacy announcement is frustrating and a little frightening,” said Common Sense Media chief executive James Steyer. “Even if the company believes that tracking users across all platforms improves their services, consumers should still have the option to opt out — especially the kids and teens who are avid users of YouTube, Gmail and Google Search.”

Google can collect information about users when they activate an Android mobile phone, sign into their accounts online or enter search terms. It can also store cookies on people’s computers to see which Web sites they visit or use its popular maps program to estimate their location.

< Google spokesmouth's spin and hype snipped >

Still, some consumer advocates and lawmakers remained skeptical.

“There is no way anyone expected this,” said Jeffrey Chester, executive director of the Center for Digital Democracy, a privacy advocacy group. “There is no way a user can comprehend the implication of Google collecting across platforms for information about your health, political opinions and financial concerns.”

Added Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass), co-chair of the Congressional Privacy Caucus: “It is imperative that users will be able to decide whether they want their information shared across the spectrum of Google’s offerings.”

As for the "federal regulators" keeping them in check, it was the "federal regulators" in the Obama administration who gave BP a pass on the required environmental impact study before approval was granted to start drilling with the Deepwater Horizon rig.  We all know how that one turned out.. (Hey libs, this is from a SOCIALIST website so you can save your breath about Fox News.)

As for me, I will continue to access Google search via proxy but will NOT be going onto YT as of 03/01.  Instead, I will watch YT videos that are embedded/hosted on other sites.

Great post. I am not surprised at all. There is no way to tell where any of your private info ends up anymore. People scream about privacy and HIPPA, but have no qualms about handing over all of their medical info to a bunch of IRS workers(yeah, they'll really guard your info), not to mention that gives the IRS ability to view bank accounts, security investments, what you paid, how you paid, how much, etc., all without your knowledge (and that's just through Obamacare). This Google thing is another nail in the lack of privacy coffin. Guaranteed you will see people here that have no idea what you are talking about, give you a "dislike", then slam you because you mentioned Fox in a very benign fashion. I would not be the least bit surprised that this was timed on the heels of the legislation last week where govt wants to regulate the internet to "scare" people into what the govt wants to control and view; all in the name of regulation and protecting us. Who is going to protect us from them (govt)? They could not even regulate their own congressional bank in D.C. and THEY WERE PHYSICALLY ON SITE. There needs to be a lot less govt NOW and forever. There has to be a way to stop these idiots running amuck; like a complete boycott of anything Google.

If gov't. can figure out ways to spy on Internet users, - Im sure that ways to avoid surveillance - sm

can't be far behind. The Internet is sort of like "Whack-A-Mole" - you smack one down, and 3 pop up somewhere else.

I'm sure there's some code-writing computer nerd out there who is going to be the next Bill Gates, because he's going to come up with software you can buy that will bypass attempts at Google or the government to spy on every move that every user of the Internet makes.

Even more likely, there is probably a new search engine in the works that will NOT spy on users, that could put Google out of business. You just never know what's going to happen next.

I have faith that the government will come out on the losing end of this, and that the Internet - the stronger and more intelligent entity, will prevail.

Curious to know - sm

I received notice of the changes in Google's privacy policies this a.m. and removed all Google traces from my computer. I then put in Bing as my search engine. Will this do me any good?
Hard to say. I tried Bing, still prefer Google. Will - have to see what happens, though. (sm)

If I find Google has become too intrusive, will remove it.

Facebook is another that I'm finding to be rather intrusive. Still, I'm currently using it because I haven't found a better alternative.

Still, Facebook replaced My Space, so I'm sure somewhere down the line something else will replace Facebook.

When I got my first PC, Dogpile the best search engine, now it's Google. Something will eventually replace Google.

Meanwhile, the Internet underground's wheels are turning, and they may come up with something better than anything we currently know. I have faith in the FREE Internet finding a way to go on.

I hope you are right. I have used Bing, as well, and I actually preferred it over Google; so, I switched to that several months ago. I also us Yahoo; seems okay so far. Seems like you cannot do anything anymore without someone peering over your shoulder. :(

google, CIA, and critical thinking - sm

It's interesting to me that you used insulting language in your post, i.e.:

"...few critical thinkers left -- unlike most of the MTs here -- who don't drink the establishment Kool-Aid and swallow the spin." Not to mention this: "...significant numerology, but of course nobody here knows that..."

It should be noted that the link you provide does not mention the CIA at all. Nevertheless, I intend to do some research and keep an eye on this story - in spite of your assumption that most of us here lack thinking skills.

To give your lopsided post a little balance, and for your critical-thinking pleasure, I provide the following quote and link:

"No one is accusing Google of directly collaborating with the CIA. But the investments are bound to be fodder for critics of Google, who already see the search giant as overly cozy with the U.S. government."

So you think fierce competition between - the architects of consumer ecosystems

aimed at creating and expanding marketing data mines across the social networks is intrusive? Get outta town. There is nothing new under the sun about this. Being the consummate prisonplanet.com aficionado (not to mention an expert numerology mystic) who never met a conspiracy theory that couldn’t be embraced, your compulsion to weave a government takeover plot into the fabric of the story is perfectably understandable.

Goggle is not proposing anything different than what is already common practice on Facebook and Apple, and evidently, to a lesser degree, on Google, for that matter. Ever notice all the pop-ups and side bars that magically appear on this forum, displaying images of stuff you recently viewed while online shopping, or how articles related to recent information searches you conducted materialize out of thin air in the upper right forum corner? This “new” policy change is being implemented behind the FTCs recent legal settlement with Facebook described below. The timing may be further explained by Google’s weak shareholder earnings vis-à-vis that of its competitors.

This is actually pretty simple stuff. The settlement between the FTC and Facebook recently provided for mandatory notification, to include an OPT-IN requirement, by which these various purveyors must abide. Should a user ignore the notification, delete the email, etc, without documenting their opt-in/opt-out choices, the purveyors are in the clear. It also authorizes fines (which I think should be much steeper) for each individual violation. All of this sounds like routine consumer capitalism on steroids (what a shock), where the odds are stacked in favor of advertisers and their small business/corporate clients, and where the consumers/users are asked to actually take personal responsibility as to whether or not they consent to becoming ad targets. It is thoroughly explained in the section of the article you so sanctimoniously decided to snip edit, on account of all us establishment Kool-Aid drinking "spin and hype" swallowers being too stupid to hear both sides of the story and make up our own minds.

Now, regarding that irrelevant insertion about relying on the federal oversight, where you seized an off-the-wall, manufactured, illogical opportunity to slam the current administration over the environmental impact study waiver BP was granted for drilling in the Gulf. Of note is the date and timing of BPs application, March 1, 2009, 39 days after Obama took office and the new Congress was sworn in. Secy of the Interior Ken Salazar was confirmed by voice vote in January. Just like Obama….who inherited an economy in full melt-down, 4 million lost jobs, an unemployment rate going through the roof, an imploding Wall Street, record-high foreclosures, an auto industry on the brink of bankruptcy, a couple of senseless wars and a looming global economic collapse….Salazar also was dealing with the ashes of Ws aftermath, such as reversing his final illegal act of authorizing uranium mining in the Grand Canyon, among numerous assaults on the environment he signed at the last minute. If memory serves, said assaults could be counted in the 100s.

To say the least, Secy Salazar had a spate of widespread wildfires to extinguish before he could tackle restructuring the corrupt MMS, which at the time was riddled with scandals. Their operations have been politely described as “ethically challenged” with an entrenched favoritism of commercial interests over conservation. For example, in 2008, employees of MMS and the energy firms they were charged to regulate were literally in bed with each other, snorting cocaine, smoking crack and marijuana, and boozing and slushing their way through off-hours out-of-control hedonistic orgies when Salazar took office. Remember? It should surprise no one that business as usual was still en force 39 days after the changing of the guard, while Secy Salazar was assessing his priorities, assembling his foot soldiers and preparing to jump into that mountainous pile of doo-doo.

I could go on and on, but suffice to say that for you to even think about casting aspersions on the Obama administration’s handling of a BP environmental study is sheer lunacy and the height of hypocrisy. The environmental ineptitudes under W are the stuff legends are made of and the history as such is just a click away. One only has to examine which party supports environmental causes and which one cloaks itself under the moniker of jobs creators while shamelessly promoting every filthy, greasy, slimy, regressive, greed-driven corporate oil interest under the sun, with their endless legislative riders, i.e. holding unemployment benefits hostage to this end time after time, among many others.

Blah, blah, blah - No substance here- Just another blame Bush for everything - Sociliast ideology and Obama walk on water- NOT

Follow it and read the stuff she snip edited out. There are tens of thousands of hits on Google that link to articles and blogs on this subject. As for the remainder of the info, it's all a matter of recent memory, since it is historical fact. The MMS was in the midst of a sex orgie and drug scandal when Ken Salazar was appointed. It was corrupt to the bone for years, and that was not its only scandal. Ws last official act was to sign scores of measures (many of them difficult to undo) that were direct assaults on the environment, favoring anything and everything but green energy. One of Obama's first official acts was to suspend them all, pending dozens of legal challenges that had already been filed. The uranium mining in the Grand Canyon (for which numerous Indian nations IMMEDIATELY filed injuntions over) was but one example. Off the top of my head, some of the measures involved fracking and mountaintop removal mining practices in numerous states, particularly in Appalachia.

The idea that the environmental study waiver granted 39 days into the Obama administration somehow caused the BP Deepwater Horizon spill is (in the words of Ed Schultz) pure psychotalk. The lax oversight, easing or elimination of regulations, and Hail Mary passes BP and other oil companies got during Ws entire tenure (and, incidentally, have been bedrock GOP policy for decades) is certainly no secret either.

thanks for a sane, thoughtful, well-researched post - ...so refreshing...nm
