dyed my hair and it aged me, I look awful

Posted: May 29, 2011

I wrote a post awhile back about getting old and trying to spruce things up.  Well, I bought burgundy hair dye and it turned my hair black.  It brought out all the crevices, dark circles and aging features in my face.  I tried to strip it three times with household bleach, honey, lemon juice, cheap shampoo, even tried to bleach over it with "born blond" and its still black, though it lightened up slightly.  Also the ends look "cinged" like I took a lighter to them.

I feel worse than before.  I need advice on how to lighten my hair on my own, please don't tell me to see professional as I can't afford it.  I want to know how you ladies maintain a lighter hair color as I have tried and failed several times.

I have dark brown hair and here is what I have done over last two years:  I bleach it with something like born blonde and then put a desirable color on. The first time I tried light auburn over it, and it turned pink.  The next time I tried caramel and it washed me out and I looked yellow (I have olive skin).  This last time, I tried burgundy and it turned it black and aged me, made me pale.

I am wondering if i'm getting the times wrong on how long to put the colors on, or the products.  Please tell me your lightening regime, thank you!

Coloring my own hair - Good luck

I used to have my hair professionally colored, but I can no longer afford it either. I was talking to my stylist about the developer that was recommended to me at Sally's and asked what the difference was between 20 and 40. My stylist said the gal at Sally's recommended #20 because #40 developer will make hair much lighter. The color I used does not come with a developer in the box, so I just buy a 20 developer because I want a medium brown color. My stylist said if I used the 40 developer I would be blonde. Hope in some ways this helps. I know when you apply color on top of already existing color it can get very dark. That's why most of the time she says to just try to do the outgrowth, and eventually pull color through the rest of the hair.

I get my hair colored and my hairdresseruses foil and different shades of blond and brown and it looks really nice and I think some of these types of streaking you can buy but not sure. I really like that type of contrasted hair. It makes for a very pretty look.

You will burn your hair to a crisp with that much dye. You - me

need to relax for a while. In the meantime use a very good conditioner (even mayonnaise with hot moist towels on it) to revive it, and use one of the worst shampoos in the world, but great for stripping color gradually, and that is Prell. When you are done getting some of that color stripped out, throw the Prell into a sewer so no one else can ruin their hair with it. Not sure if you have long or short hair, but if it is short, it will grow out enough for a good haircut in 3-4 months and you can quit worrying. Dark hair always makes you look older, so next time consider highlights or a light brown color. Be careful with the shades of blonde, they have a tendency to either turn your hair red or green, depending on which one you use.

I burned the tips nicely, so I have been putting EV olive oil on it and serum. It helps a lot. I won't be coloring for awhile, so I will have to live with this awful color for the time being. Thx for reply

Yes, I think you just need to leave it alone for a while. It's been through enough. Hair dye fades and grows out on its own, so just give it time. Then, I would just leave your natural color for a while, and then just use a dark blond. It will just "lift" your natural medium brown a shade or 2.
As we get older, we should go a little - lighter IMO SM

I have medium brown hair, used to go to stylist, did a nice brown color with highlights. Can't afford it in the last year since going to VR, but you can do this yourself. I think the highlights brighten things up a bit.

Color Fades In Time - JD

[ In Reply To ..]
Color fades in time, the less you mess with it, the better. The more you shampoo it, the more the color will fade, sitting in the sun does that, too.

I have dark brown hair and use dark blond coloring. If it starts getting "brassy" I'll put a light brown on my roots, then bring it down a big the last 15 minutes of processing time, then wash it out.

is blonde and I dyed it black last year. BIG mistake. I strongly suggest you NOT add more color at this point (only makes it worse) However, here's what I did when it happened. I went to Sally Beauty supply and bought a product called something like ION color remover. I think it was about 12 bux. Another thing that is good about Sally is that the people who work there are usually pretty knowledgeable about color disasters; they are the ones who suggested that product. I used that and it didn't take it back to normal of course, but it got it to about a medium brown. After waiting and doing a lot of protein treatments, washing several times with a clarifying shampoo (please not Prell use one you find in Sally, only a few bux more but worth it) I then used ION highlights (also at Sally) and carefully placed highlights thruout (easier if you can get help), watching the timing carefully. Got the highlights to a light yellow and then toned it using ION demi permanent (make sure you use a neutral color). Then it looked more like a dark blonde with highlights, and I was satisfied, though it wasn't really back to where I started. After about a year of NEVER adding any color or more highlights anywhere but the regrowth, I was fine.

My advice is to get to a Sally Beauty (hopefully you have one nearby) and talk to someone there. Their advice is free. Much cheaper than a salon and a little safer than winging it on your own.

toner - OP

I am going to go to Sally's next time and ask. I usually go there and just wander in circles, get confused and go to a drug store for the box color.

Does the toner get rid of brassiness? Thats my only problem, I like red, but not orange. I would love to have light brown or golden but it turns brassy.

I am going to deep condition it for awhile before I attempt to color it again. I think I put it in shock lol thanx for the tips

Try Oop's hair color removal. It works - love my hair now

very well. Also, try a champagne blonde or light blonde color when dying your hair. Revlon Colorsilks have great colors. At $3.00 a box, you can't go wrong. I use the champagne blonde and get a lot of compliments.

Love, love, love Revlon Colorsilks! - Justcoloredtoday

[ In Reply To ..]
It seems like Revlon Colorsilks is much gentler to hair than other products. I used to use Loreal and my blonde was always brassy looking and the smell was horrible! I have been coloring blonde for about 20 years now and decided to do something different. Instead of the Revlon Natural Light Blonde I went with the medium blonde today to see if I could get something darker just cuz eventually I would like to be done coloring with blonde. It came out fantastic! I was a little bit afraid of what the ends would look like since they were really closer to a white blonde. The color came out a really pretty dark blonde/light brown color..even the ends look good! I loved Revlon before but now I am really crazy about it!!! Three dollars is so much better than the 200 they wanted at the salon to change my blonde to a darker color! Good luck OP..I hope you can figure something out!

Dawn - American MT

Dawn dishsoap (the original) works very well for stripping bad color off your hair. Not sure it would work after everything else you\\\'ve already tried, but if it every happens again....try Dawn first. It won\\\'t harm your hair either...that\\\'s why they used it on animals affected by the big oil spillage we had last year. Good luck to you!

I dyed my hair and it turned tar black - I used Prell - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I thought it would be a pretty soft black (if that's possible). I'm light brown hair. My hair looked like I fell in a tar pit and made me look ghastly pale and my ends fried.

I shampoo'd with Prell. It really stripped a lot of the color out. Not totally, but every time I shampoo'd it (ever day), black would wash down the drain as thought I had just colored it. It didn't remove all of it, but it did get a lot out.

I used Prell growing up and don't know how I liked it. It smell awful for shampoo (kind of like the 1970s shampoo smelled, but it did get a lot of excess black out.

Wish you the best of luck. Think we've all done it one time or another.

With all that processing, your hair is probably really damaged. Before you do anything else, treat yourself to a good deep conditioning treatment. Using bleach is also bad for your scalp as well as your hair, I wouldn't recommend that to anyone, ever. My advice at this point would be: Live with the color and let it grow out before you damage your hair more than it already is. I know you say you can't afford it, but it sounds as if it's time for some professional advice. Once you get it fixed, it will be easier to maintain. If you want to do your own color, ask a stylist what to use, most of them are pretty helpful. I used to do my own color but now go to the salon. When I did it myself, no matter what shade I chose, I never got the results I wanted.

When your hair is health again, is there a beauty college near you that you could go to? I have gone to a local school to get my hair colored, it is about half the price of a full salon and they do a very good job, although it took 3 hours - I really prefer to do it myself because I can do it much faster, but was helping out a friend's sister who needed the credit.

Have to agree with Color Oops...worked for me - wimt

[ In Reply To ..]
I also did what you did... put a way too dark color on my hair and it looked awful. One thing is that bleach won't really remove the hair color but it super damages your hair. I've tried it when I've gone too dark before. About 6 months ago I mixed a dark brown with a dark copper brown from Sally's, and it turned out so dark with reddish hues and it looked awful. I tried bleaching it with no luck. I then got the Color Oops, and used that and my hair actually felt better and it did remove most of the color. It doesn't bleach it.. it actually opens up the molecules on the shaft of the hair so that the color you put on washes out. You have to rinse your hair for 20 minutes!!! after using it. That's a long shower...standing there for 20 minutes, rinsing, waiting for the timer to go off. One thing with Color Oops is you can't go and color with any ammonia style color products immediately afterwards because any of those molecules that you tried to wash away will expand right back up and recolor your hair. Use the Color Oops, rinse for 20 minutes, and then just try to live with that color for a little bit until you can cover over it several days later. Let us know how it works if you try it!

Middle Aged Crazy?Dec 30, 2015
I wonder how many of you out there have had a spouse go through what I can only describe as a middle aged crazy. My husband of 23 years has been a motorcycle enthusiast for many years, but recently decided to join a "patched club" and is now the vice president. This has been for a couple of years now and quite frankly, I don't like it at all. I don't like the way they all have stupid nicknames, that their club business cannot be discussed with the "women" and that at the drop of a hat ...

Is There Any Help For My HairMay 01, 2011
I understand as we grow older our bodies change, skin gets saggy, wrinkled, loses elasticity, etc and our hair changes.  What I'm wondering is this.  Is there a product, vitamin, or whatever that can make your hair look younger and healthier.  Growing up I had beautiful hair, soft natural curls that the hairdressers said people would die to have curls that are natural like that.  Now at 51 years old my hair is coarse, and frizzy.  I can find some curls here and ther ...

Hair Falling OutFeb 04, 2012
