How often do you wash your hair?
Posted: Jul 3, 2013
Little neighbor girl and I were having a discussion. She washes her hair daily, I not as much and thought would just ask others. Thanks.;
Only 2-3 times per week. - sm

I have EXTREMELY dry hair, never an oily scalp or anything. Hair is super dry and frizzy after washing it, no matter what products I use and it takes 2 days of flat-ironing and conditioners to get it back to normal. My child on the other hand, he has to wash his hair daily, it is so oily.
Every other day - But...

I got out of working MT from home and worked in an office for a little while. I had to wash it every day---not because it was dirty, just I couldn't style it properly unless I did. I don't have oily hair--it's wavy and a bit frizzy, so I guess I lean towards normal to dry hair.
I have a girlfriend who wakes up every morning with oily hair, so she has to wash it every day, every day.

I also have dry hair that is naturally curly (read frizzy after washing) and I use Organix Green Tree/Pomegranate antifrizz serum - works wonders! It smooths my hair and makes it wavy not frizzy. Just don't use too much or it's too oily. Hope this helps.

Every other day unless I work outside and get very dirty. No blow drying, drys out scalp. Hair is pretty long.

I have a crew cut, so it's not much work. :)
About 3 times a week, - unless I've been to the gym

I would say when I go to the gym, it's more like 4 days a week.
I've never really known how other women deal with their hair--do they wash it in the morning and style it? Or are they like me: Wash my hair in the evening and let it air dry (occasionally blow dry), and then only really style it when I am going out.
I'd love to hear some of your guys' hair routines so I know what's normal and what isn't. LOL
Also, on days I don't wash my hair, I don't let it get wet. Are the rest of you that way? Or do you let it get wet and then dry it afterwards, so it looks more fresh?
I love this thread. :)
LOL, these topics are fun - see msg

I like washing my hair at night, but if it's too freshly washed before going to sleep, I wake up with serious bed hair the next morning.
I always just air dry. I have not used a hair dryer in years and years. I have a wash and go style. Hair dryers wreak havoc on the hair. If you must use one to obtain some body, just dry it at the roots and let the rest air dry.
When I was younger, I had really long hair, wavy. What I did then was wash it ever night, let it air dry, then put it up in a pony tail on top of my head and then split that in two, and then rolled the two pieces with 2 empty frozen orange juice containers. My hair came out with lots of body, but straightened out the waves.
The juice cans didn't interfere with my sleep because they were all the way on top of my head.
oh golly! I remember the orange juice cans, too! - nm

I have extremely curly, thick, long hair. If I wash it more frequently, it dries out and gets even more frizzy. I only brush it when I wash it. The other days I just run my fingers through it in the shower to try and smooth it out a little.
Run your fingers through it in the shower? - Curious

That sounds as if you're getting it wet when you shower, but not washing it?
If that's the deal, doesn't that make it feel greasy and miserable? The main reason I used to wash my hair every day (including during times I had it long, and like yours, it's very thick) was that it looked and felt awful if I got it wet without washing it. (Even if I was out in heavy rain, I'd pretty much have to wash it just for exactly that reason.)
I don't put my head in the shower stream... - sm

I just wet my hands and try to pull out tangles as best I can. I don't wet my head. I also use coconut oil a couple of times a week. Once the hair is wet though, I'm with you in that I have to wash it. My hair is so thick that I would have to stand in a downpour for 15 minutes before it got completely soaked.
Can you have it cut - Or something?
[ In Reply To ..]
No offense, but washing it only every 10 days sounds a little gross. I'm sure it looks fine, but bottom line, at the scalp level, there has got to be a lot of dead skin and oil.
Can you not have it at least layered and/or thinned out? Cutting it shorter in length would also help.

I'm 50 now and I've tried washing it every other day, but I can't stand the 2nd day oily feeling.

[ In Reply To ..]
Do you wash, dry and style it every day? I'm just wondering, because it takes me about half an hour to dry and style, and I just can't be bothered!
Also, by the time I'm done I'm all sweaty from the styling tools. How do you do it?
answer - no
[ In Reply To ..]
I let it naturally air-dry and I don't style it. I have basic bangs, a long layers cut and usually I just throw it back in a ponytail.
I'm same as you - Good question
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm tired of spending so much time drying and styling, but I just can't air dry my hair. If I don't blow dry it completely dry, I get a sinus infection or a cough the next day. I envy people who wash and wear their hair. As I have gotten older, my hair has gotten drier, not so oily so I don't have to wash every day, a couple of times a week seems to work out okay, but if I was working outside the house, I would definitely wash and style every day.
I Gotta Ask - see msg pls

Okay, how does having wet hair give you a virus or an infection?? This sounds like something out of the 1950s when they actually thought that being wet and/or cold gave you illnesses.
You catch viruses, you get infections, but from the virus or bacteria, not the weather or wet hair.
The only way this could happen is if your immune system is compromised, and you spent an extreme amount of time in freezing cold weather, where your body was busy trying to keep warm instead of warding off viruses or bacteria.
Did you realise that more frequent washing - see msg

actually makes your hair more oily? Washing strips the oils out so your scalp overcompensates by producing more oil = vicious cycle.
It takes a couple of weeks but if you reduce how often you wash your hair, the oiliness will settle. I used to do the "low 'poo" cleaning and my hair was never healthier - water washing, silicone-free conditioner every three days for moisturising and shampoo about once every 10-15 days.
That doesn't work on faces - why on hair? Same skin. - nm

1, 2, 3 days. - Depends.

Every day if hot and/or sweaty. Every other day normally. Every 3 in winter. On days I do not wash, I rinse with very warm water, get the dust, pollen and cobwebs out (do a lot of gardening). Finally accepted my curly/kind of fizzy do, so let it dry in room air.
Well, the obvious answer - Nick

is for all of you ladies to get crewcuts! Just think how cool you can be in the summer! :)-

The brain is a bit "fizzy" thanks to the heat wave.
As for the crew cut comment below, all through childhood my mom had my hair really short. Now 50, I am finally rebelling!

Do You Wash Your Hair Every Day?Jul 02, 2010I know they say to only wash your hair every other day but I have never been able to do that. I shampoo/condition my hair every day as I cannot stand the feeling of my hair being dirty or greasy-looking or whatever. I am 28 and have pretty long hair and my hair has always been really healthy so I have never tried to force myself to not wash it everyday.

Is There Any Help For My HairMay 01, 2011I understand as we grow older our bodies change, skin gets saggy, wrinkled, loses elasticity, etc and our hair changes. What I'm wondering is this. Is there a product, vitamin, or whatever that can make your hair look younger and healthier. Growing up I had beautiful hair, soft natural curls that the hairdressers said people would die to have curls that are natural like that. Now at 51 years old my hair is coarse, and frizzy. Dog HairJun 14, 2011For those of you with dogs that shed (like my Golden), can you share you grooming schedule and favorite brush?
I've used to use a rake but found a tool that's cheaper than a Furminator (sp?) and doesn't rip the skin. It's made by Oster and called a Shedzilla. I've been brushing him every couple of days but this time of year, I'm wondering if I should do it more often? I like to do it outside to keep the fur out of the house as much as possible. ...
Hair Falling OutFeb 04, 2012I am devastated right now. I had long, thick beautiful hair and over the past couple of months I have noticed a big change in it. Now it is falling out! Help - Need Hair Color FixFeb 01, 2010A few days ago I colored my hair black. The box said (and looked like it would be a soft black), and it turned out way blacker than I imagined (if that's possible). I usually go brown, but the reason I went black was to try to get back to as close as my natural color while the gray is coming in. I really didn't want to color my hair, however, between the brown I last colored it, the gray coming in, and the "soft" black that was mixed in with the gray I had too many co ...

Pink HairAug 03, 2010Can anyone recommend a product that will cover gray/white roots without turning my hair a pink color? Some years ago I was using over the counter color and was actually approached by people, telling me my hair was "purple." I told my stylist and she said the over the counter products have a violet base, and when applied to brown hair it gives a pretty highlight. If you apply it to hair that has lost its color it soaks up the violet color and that's what you see.  ...

Hair Dye What To Buy Tired Of ColorsilkDec 03, 2009I have long hair that usually takes about 3 boxes of dye. I Am About To Frost My Hair. Any Tips?Nov 09, 2010I actually have Loreal in a box but also went out a year ago and bought the individual products. No More Brittle Hair Or Dry Skin.Sep 20, 2010If any of you have problems with brittle hair and dry skin, try a shower filter. The water in your shower is filled with chemicals, minerals, and the same or more amount of chlorine as swimming pool water. I just purchased an Aquasana shower filter. In less than 1 week, I have noticed a tremendous difference in the softness of my hair and skin. It is like showering in pure spring water. There is no way I would ever go back to using plain shower water again!

Save Your Hair For PB Oil CleanupJul 05, 2010In the latest issue of one of my dog journals, there's an article about a place in CA, Matter of Trust, that's collecting dog and human hair to use for helping clean up some of the oil.
