Hair falling out

I am devastated right now. I had long, thick beautiful hair and over the past couple of months I have noticed a big change in it. Now it is falling out! Long strands just letting loose. At this rate, I will be bald in a couple of weeks and that is not an exaggeration. It doesn't even look or feel like hair. It is shriveling up and is very light and falling out! How and why can this happen and will it stop? Has this happened to anyone?

It could be stress and it could be your thyroid. I have very thick black hair and mine started falling out in hand-fulls. The doc really didnt believe me at first because it is so thick he couldnt tell it. I literally put it in a bag and had to prove it to him. Tested my thyroid and my TSH was 3 times what it should be, T4 was right at the border of being abnormal (doc said t4 was the next to go then T3) so that seems to be part of my problem. Plus I have been under a HORRIBLE amount of stress, have chronic pancreatitis and was just in the hospital twice in the last month. Illness will make it fall out too. I would get to the doc and get some blood work done. My sisters fell out after she had two surgeries within two months, just from the stress of having the surgeries. But it grew back in also. Get to the doc and get teh thyroid and other things checked. If you have to, save the hair and take it with you!

When I went off of my thyroid meds for a few months due to loss of insurance, mine also started falling out terribly and now that I am back on my thyroid meds, much better. See your pcp and get some blood work done. Good luck to you.

I had the same experience and it turned out to be my thyroid. Once I got on Synthroid, my hair grew back but it was a long, slow process. Get your thyroid levels checked.

I went to my doc and he said he would save me some money because my thyroid was perfectly normal because my weight has stayed the same. I am going today for a second opinion. This shouldn't happen to a healthy person (I don't think). Yes, I have been under a great deal of stress for the past 3 years since my divorce but this is unbelievable. My hair was so pretty and I have lost about 40% in the past week alone! Thanks for your responses. Greatly appreciated. I am getting some blood work today.

Went to the doctor's. My hair is falling out because I stopped the birth control pill in August of last year. Was off it for 1 or 2 months and then started it back up again. This is the result. If someone had told me I could lose my hair because of the Pill, I never would have started it.

For those of you with dogs that shed (like my Golden), can you share you grooming schedule and favorite brush? alopecia areata, have you tried any home remeadies that have worked? I have gone to the dermatoloigst, have received 3 sets of cortisone shots to the scalp so far, no luck, just a few fine hairs coming in. I know they say to only wash your hair every other day but I have never been able to do that. I shampoo/condition my hair every day as I cannot stand the feeling of my hair being dirty or greasy-looking or whatever. Can anyone recommend a product that will cover gray/white roots without turning my hair a pink color? Some years ago I was using over the counter color and was actually approached by people, telling me my hair was "purple." I told my stylist and she said the over the counter products have a violet base, and when applied to brown hair it gives a pretty highlight. Battling insomnia last night, I watched an infomercial for this product and the thought behind it makes sense to keep one's hair at its healthiest (especially if platinum blond, like I currently am). I have long hair that usually takes about 3 boxes of dye. I usually only do it about 2-3 times a year and do the all over color each time because my color tends to fade. I think hair dye might be one of those things that you get what you pay for. I usually buy the Colorsilk ($2-$3 at Walmart) because it is cheaper and I am usually broke. I actually have Loreal in a box but also went out a year ago and bought the individual products. I finally have the nerve to do it as my hair is dull mouse brown and long - and now looking lifeless and bland. I am 50 and want to enjoy long hair for a bit longer before I chop it off for convenience sake. Should I make small streaks or bold. Wash it out fast or go for the sun streaked look. If any of you have problems with brittle hair and dry skin, try a shower filter. The water in your shower is filled with chemicals, minerals, and the same or more amount of chlorine as swimming pool water. I just purchased an Aquasana shower filter.
