Curly/wavy hair vs non-curly/wavy hair

Posted: Dec 13, 2012

Feedback, please. Where do you sit in your opinion? Are you happy with your hair or are you envious of your counterpart's hair?

Okay, I have wavy/curly hair.  Basically just wavy, but if it's cut short, it's curly.

I have an interesting observation. People with curly/wavy hair want straight hair, and people with straight hair want curly/wavy.

Being one of those curly/wavy people, I have to stress to you envious people who have straight hair and want wavy/curly, it's not all it's cracked up to be. What you are forgetting is that wavy/curly hair DOESN'T NECESSARILY CURVE/WAVE WHERE YOU WANT IT! And, if it's humid out, forget it. Even if you manged to glue the curls into the direction you wanted them (or tame the frizz which often goes along with it), all that work is gone and it boings back into where IT wants to go.

People envy my waves/curls. I envy their straight hair. My straight-haired friends, though, did tell me that in humid weather their hair flattens. That is completely opposite of our wavy counterparts, we just poof out more.

My ideal would be THICK straight hair.  It has lots of body and it does not get crazy wild and it does not flatten.

Same problem here - Dread the bad hair days

I have the same problem, wavy/curly hair that definitely has a mind of its own. Thank heavens for the Chi hair straightening iron. It's the only one I've found that gets hot enough to really straighten my hair...of course, it still takes me an hour to do it, but it does stay stick straight (even with sleeping on it) for about 3 days, when I have to wash it and begin the cycle all over again. Plus my hair is obscenely thick, so I have to section it into 8 different sections to make straightening it manageable.

If I ever hit the lottery (like THAT is ever gonna happen, lol!), first of my list of luxuries would be someone to come give me a professional blowout and straightening every other day. Ahhhh, not having to deal with my hair on my own would be heaven!!!

That's my dream, too! - Curly/wavy and not liking it

I would love for someone to do my hair for me every day! I have struggled with my hair all my life. I have a book about embracing your curly/wavy hair, but the author forgets that just because you have curly/wavy hair it doesn't mean it looks good on you. I have a small head and a round face, so unless I grow my hair below chin length and straighten it I look like a cheerful bowling ball.

I have thick curly hair, and I've always wished - for straight hair. I think it is

worse now that most of the styles you see are for people with straight hair. When I was young, there were still a lot of curly styles that were popular.

I am of mixed race and I have extremely curly kinky hair. As a child I absolutely hated it, it being the 80s and the feathered look was in. I had a stepmother who referred to me as n***er wool as well, so that didn't help. When I was 17 I got an absolutely awful haircut and decided from then on I would not cut my hair and see what happened. Now at 40 I have very long, thick curly black hair (with a little salt coming in now) and I get complements on it all the time. I wash and condition and comb in the shower once a week and other than that I kind of run my fingers through it a bit, but that's it. I think you have to embrace what you have. Once I did that, it stopped being an issue for me. The only issue is that I "shed" quite a bit and my hair is hell on the drains, so I have to be careful. Every so often my husband will get a 4-foot hair in his soup as well, but I try to keep is back while cooking.

I try to embrace my hair the way it is, but dang it, tired of - looking ugly - sm

Have to say I absolutely HATE my hair. I used to have gorgious gorgious natural curls. Now at 55 my curls are gone and I've just got a mixture of fuzz and frizz. Every once in awhile I will see a curl from my youth peaking out, but its always underneath the frizz. The last time I needed to get my hair cut I was going to go to the lady who did my husbands hair because she did a great job (and he's really particular about his hair), but she doesn't work weekends, so found a different branch to go to (one of those generic haircut places all over the country). I figured they have to pass a test and know how to cut hair, how bad can it be. Besides, I've had many haircuts by different people, they all were okay, but this one a few weeks ago was the worst and I'm talking about WORST!. Told her to trim my hair to just about my shoulders. Closed my eyes and looked down (per her instructions so she could trim the back) and next thing I felt was cold scissors on the back of my neck and within 1 second she had cut my hair to above my ears. I sat in panic. Couldn't say anything or leave as only half was done. Meanwhile she's telling me about the wonderful natural waves I have and how people would die to have these waves (while she's is chopping the hell out of it). Of course I don't have my glasses on so couldn't see anything, but it's always been that way and in the end it would come out great. Not this time. Meanwhile she's talking about shampoos and what kind is best and she had really pretty hair so I'm thinking it will look fine, just my imagination. Then she's telling me I look like a little flapper girl with my waves and I'm thinking - lady I'm 55 years old 200 pounds and I aint no little flapper girl and have no little girl flapper costumes at home, so you better make my hair look decent (keeping this to myself). So, after cutting and combing and wetting it down it was "reveal" time. She handed me the mirrow commenting on how cute my hair looks. I looked in the mirror. My hair was below my shulders before. Now my hair is above my ears. No curls, no waves, but she did take water, parted my hair down the middle and combed it flat to my head (had to use my sleeve to dab the drips of water running down the side of my head and neck). The shock on my face was nothing compared to the shock on my husbands face when he saw me. Needless to say not going back there.

On a brighter note - a couple days later after I could play around with it my husband told me he really likes my hair this short. He told me it makes me look younger. So...I am going to keep my hair this short, but once it grows out I'm going to go to the lady that did his hair or have on of my neighbors recommend someone.

I would embrace my hair, but just can't do it. I've never considered myself pretty (except when I was little growing up), but now I'm just downright homely. Luckily my husband doesn't feel that way, but I do. Maybe a new and decent haircut will make me feel different and let me embrace my hair. Right now I can't bring myself to do it.

I think the ideal nowadays - is thick, luxuriant and wavy...

I remember the bad old days when girls used to iron their hair to make it board straight, but I don't think this is considered attractive any more.

I used to iron my hair - I'm the OP who started thread-see msg

[ In Reply To ..]
I used to iron my hair, literally, on the ironing board with an iron. One time, I let the iron sit too long on too hot and I ended up singeing (sp?) one side of my hair, right at my ear, and I looked like I had a big poof on one side of my head. I also stunk like burnt hair for while, no matter if I washed it or not.

That was in 11th grade, in the early 70s when parted in the middle and poker straight was "in."

Used to fight the curls but as the years have gone by, I just go with them. I use Noodle Head and it really curls it and makes the ringlets spread out more.

Noodle Head, Care Free Curl Gold, Argon Oil, and Natural 7 oil are all great for curly hair and believe me, I have tried TONS of products that made me look like a brillo head. Sometimes I mix Noodle Head with Natural 7 oil and I really get nutty curls. Fog and ocean myst make lovely curls but I can't buy them!

Question About Hair. I Am Older And Have Rather Fine Hair But I Do Jan 24, 2017
get it foiled with some color in it.  I have been thinking about a curly perm but I am not sure what kind to get and I would have my hairdresser do it.  I dont want a fuzz ball so I am wondering if anyone here has tried this on colored hair just streaked color.  I want a good perm that would last for a while and have curl to it but not tight.  My hairdresser does not carrying prems anymore and the company they deal with does not sell them either.  They are expensive ...

Is There Any Help For My HairMay 01, 2011
I understand as we grow older our bodies change, skin gets saggy, wrinkled, loses elasticity, etc and our hair changes.  What I'm wondering is this.  Is there a product, vitamin, or whatever that can make your hair look younger and healthier.  Growing up I had beautiful hair, soft natural curls that the hairdressers said people would die to have curls that are natural like that.  Now at 51 years old my hair is coarse, and frizzy.  I can find some curls here and ther ...

Dog HairJun 14, 2011
For those of you with dogs that shed (like my Golden), can you share you grooming schedule and favorite brush? I've used to use a rake but found a tool that's cheaper than a Furminator (sp?) and doesn't rip the skin. It's made by Oster and called a Shedzilla. I've been brushing him every couple of days but this time of year, I'm wondering if I should do it more often? I like to do it outside to keep the fur out of the house as much as possible. ...

Hair Falling OutFeb 04, 2012
I am devastated right now.  I had long, thick beautiful hair and over the past couple of months I have noticed a big change in it.  Now it is falling out!  Long strands just letting loose.  At this rate, I will be bald in a couple of weeks and that is not an exaggeration.  It doesn't even look or feel like hair.  It is shriveling up and is very light and falling out!  How and why can this happen and will it stop?  Has this happened to anyone? ...

Help - Need Hair Color FixFeb 01, 2010
A few days ago I colored my hair black.  The box said (and looked like it would be a soft black), and it turned out way blacker than I imagined (if that's possible).  I usually go brown, but the reason I went black was to try to get back to as close as my natural color while the gray is coming in.  I really didn't want to color my hair, however, between the brown I last colored it, the gray coming in, and the "soft" black that was mixed in with the gray I had too many co ...

alopecia areata, have you tried any home remeadies that have worked?  I have gone to the dermatoloigst, have received 3 sets of cortisone shots to the scalp so far, no luck, just a few fine hairs coming in.  It should have all grown back at this point from the injections.  So now we are waiting a year to see if anything changes (been about 2 years already so looks pretty permanent right now).  Doc gave me samples of Protopic but basically said she did not expect it to work bu ...

Do You Wash Your Hair Every Day?Jul 02, 2010
I know they say to only wash your hair every other day but I have never been able to do that. I shampoo/condition my hair every day as I cannot stand the feeling of my hair being dirty or greasy-looking or whatever. Pink HairAug 03, 2010
Can anyone recommend a product that will cover gray/white roots without turning my hair a pink color?  Some years ago I was using over the counter color and was actually approached by people, telling me my hair was "purple."  I told my stylist and she said the over  the counter products have a violet base, and when applied to brown hair it gives a pretty highlight.  If you apply it to hair that has lost its color it soaks up the violet color and that's what you see.  ...

Wen Hair Care?Apr 15, 2012
Battling insomnia last night, I watched an infomercial for this product and the thought behind it makes sense to keep one's hair at its healthiest (especially if platinum blond, like I currently am). Hair Dye What To Buy Tired Of ColorsilkDec 03, 2009
I have long hair that usually takes about 3 boxes of dye.  I usually only do it about 2-3 times a year and do the all over color each time because my color tends to fade.  I think hair dye might be one of those things that you get what you pay for.  I usually buy the Colorsilk ($2-$3 at Walmart) because it is cheaper and I am usually broke.  This year I think I will splurge a little and buy a more expensive brand.  In the past I have tried the Herbal ess. and Natrual Ins ...

I Am About To Frost My Hair. Any Tips?Nov 09, 2010
I actually have Loreal in a box but also went out a year ago and bought the individual products.  I finally have the nerve to do it as my hair is dull mouse brown and long - and now looking lifeless and bland.  I am 50 and want to enjoy long hair for a bit longer before I chop it off for convenience sake.   Should I make small streaks or bold. Wash it out fast or go for the sun streaked look.   I just wonder if you could tell me how to not screw it up.   Thank you. ...

No More Brittle Hair Or Dry Skin.Sep 20, 2010
If any of you have problems with brittle hair and dry skin, try a shower filter.  The water in your shower is filled with chemicals, minerals, and the same or more amount of chlorine as swimming pool water.  I just purchased an Aquasana shower filter.  In less than 1 week, I have noticed a tremendous difference in the softness of my hair and skin.  It is like showering in pure spring water.  There is no way I would ever go back to using plain shower water again!  ...

Anyone Ever Tried That Hair Removal System No No?Jul 29, 2013

Dyed My Hair And It Aged Me, I Look AwfulMay 29, 2011
I wrote a post awhile back about getting old and trying to spruce things up.  Well, I bought burgundy hair dye and it turned my hair black.  It brought out all the crevices, dark circles and aging features in my face.  I tried to strip it three times with household bleach, honey, lemon juice, cheap shampoo, even tried to bleach over it with "born blond" and its still black, though it lightened up slightly.  Also the ends look "cinged" like I took a lighter to them.
