hair dye what to buy tired of Colorsilk

Posted: Dec 3, 2009

I have long hair that usually takes about 3 boxes of dye.  I usually only do it about 2-3 times a year and do the all over color each time because my color tends to fade.  I think hair dye might be one of those things that you get what you pay for.  I usually buy the Colorsilk ($2-$3 at Walmart) because it is cheaper and I am usually broke.  This year I think I will splurge a little and buy a more expensive brand.  In the past I have tried the Herbal ess. and Natrual Instincts and I guess they were okay.  I also have tried the Nutriesse (think that is the way to spell it) but the blond I chose made me look gray and nothing near the color diagram on the back of the box at all!  So what do you think?  Also, I need help with SHAMPOO and conditioner.  Lately I have been buying stinkers!!!  The last few I tried were the new Nutrisse one with olive oil, Herbal Ess. long hair one, and the Lorel one for blondes.  ALL STUNK!!!  I need something to help with tangles.  Sorry this is long guys!  I value any info you could give me!  Thanks!

Shampoo and Conditioner - hang onto the long

I also have long hair and use Shadez at the salon 2-3 times a year so I can't help you with dye, but...

For shampoo and conditioner I use this Rosemary-Mint stuff I get from Sally Beauty Supply. It's AURA by Naturelle. I love it. It smells great, the conditioner makes your scalp tingle, and it is good on the tangles and breakage. It comes in big bottles (1 liter) for about $10 each. Sounds expensive but I don't wash my hair every day, and the 1 liter (33.8 oz) bottles last me a few months.

I tried the Herbal Essence long hair stuff... in the red bottles? ACK! It was slimy and was too sweet-fruity smelling, and made it limp and greasy-looking when dry.

First, let me say I'm jealous - MTDays

Maybe it's a different ballgame when you're going blonde or maybe mine grows crazy fast, but as a brunette trying to disguise gray, even stretching it out to a month means no ponytails for me (it's the only time I'm thankful about having very thick and very curly hair- it makes "sproings" all over my head so you can't see through them to the roots, like a really full Christmas tree keeps you from seeing the trunk.

Anyway, I usually go on the cheap with mine, too (having found there to be no real staying difference between doing it myself for $7 or paying $60 to have it done at the salon). While not long, mine is very thick and coarse so if I'm playing with an all-over color change, it normally takes two boxes. However, on my splurge moments, I've gotten L'Oreal Preference, and have noticed that it only takes one box to get full coverage. Since yours is so long, it will probably still take you two boxes, but I guess that's an improvement on three.

Shampoo I can't really help you with. I'm usually either Suave or White Rain and count on the cream rinse to deal with the tangles.

Good luck with getting all glammed up for the holidays!

I recommend Sally's Beauty Supply... - blondie

I learned a long time ago not to buy hair dye at Walmart, etc. I only buy coloring from Sally's. You may pay a little more but it shows with the dye job. Coloring from Walmart never comes out the color it should, and it damages my hair and basically always looked bad. So I just go to Sally's and get what I need there. Much better.

I've used L'oreal hair dye for years - MT4ever

for hair color and it does a great job on my hair and colors gray well. I also use Pantene Pro-V Ice Shine shampoo and conditioner and really love it. I know it's more expensive but it leaves my hair full, thick and shiny - much more so than the cheaper brands.

I use the For Men Only dye and I am a woman - Good coverage

First of all, I cannot understand why charge women so much for their hair dye and the man's is less than $10.00? It makes my hair much more shiny than the women's does anyway. As far as the gray showing through, I have 2 clip in hair pieces. One is a shorter version, the other one fuller. No one, not even my daughter could tell that I was wearing them because they blend so well with my own hair color. Because of thyroid problem have had hair loss for years (even before the For Men Only) so when the gray showing through or to cover up the spots in the crown, I use those. They are wonderful. You get 2 coverages, both for gray and the hair loss.

I used Preference also - ipodgirl

I use Preference by L'Oreal also, and I have long hair too. I love the conditioner that they put in the box also. It REALLY helps with the tangles also and does not make my hair look greasy. I don't wash my hair every day either, usually just every 2 or 3 days. The hair color does not fade on me and really helps to cover the gray. I know someone else on here also posted that they use Preference, but I just wanted to say that it works for me too. Another good conditioner that I found for long hair is Pantene Pro-V classic conditioner. It's a little on the expensive side but for the small amount of it that I use, it's not too bad cost-wise. Hope that helps.

Question About Hair. I Am Older And Have Rather Fine Hair But I Do Jan 24, 2017
get it foiled with some color in it.  I have been thinking about a curly perm but I am not sure what kind to get and I would have my hairdresser do it.  I dont want a fuzz ball so I am wondering if anyone here has tried this on colored hair just streaked color.  I want a good perm that would last for a while and have curl to it but not tight.  My hairdresser does not carrying prems anymore and the company they deal with does not sell them either.  They are expensive ...

Is There Any Help For My HairMay 01, 2011
I understand as we grow older our bodies change, skin gets saggy, wrinkled, loses elasticity, etc and our hair changes.  What I'm wondering is this.  Is there a product, vitamin, or whatever that can make your hair look younger and healthier.  Growing up I had beautiful hair, soft natural curls that the hairdressers said people would die to have curls that are natural like that.  Now at 51 years old my hair is coarse, and frizzy.  I can find some curls here and ther ...

Dog HairJun 14, 2011
For those of you with dogs that shed (like my Golden), can you share you grooming schedule and favorite brush? I've used to use a rake but found a tool that's cheaper than a Furminator (sp?) and doesn't rip the skin. It's made by Oster and called a Shedzilla. I've been brushing him every couple of days but this time of year, I'm wondering if I should do it more often? I like to do it outside to keep the fur out of the house as much as possible. ...

Hair Falling OutFeb 04, 2012
I am devastated right now.  I had long, thick beautiful hair and over the past couple of months I have noticed a big change in it.  Now it is falling out!  Long strands just letting loose.  At this rate, I will be bald in a couple of weeks and that is not an exaggeration.  It doesn't even look or feel like hair.  It is shriveling up and is very light and falling out!  How and why can this happen and will it stop?  Has this happened to anyone? ...

Help - Need Hair Color FixFeb 01, 2010
A few days ago I colored my hair black.  The box said (and looked like it would be a soft black), and it turned out way blacker than I imagined (if that's possible).  I usually go brown, but the reason I went black was to try to get back to as close as my natural color while the gray is coming in.  I really didn't want to color my hair, however, between the brown I last colored it, the gray coming in, and the "soft" black that was mixed in with the gray I had too many co ...

I Have A Hair Question Too, For Those Of You With - SmMay 01, 2011
alopecia areata, have you tried any home remeadies that have worked?  I have gone to the dermatoloigst, have received 3 sets of cortisone shots to the scalp so far, no luck, just a few fine hairs coming in.  It should have all grown back at this point from the injections.  So now we are waiting a year to see if anything changes (been about 2 years already so looks pretty permanent right now).  Doc gave me samples of Protopic but basically said she did not expect it to work bu ...

Do You Wash Your Hair Every Day?Jul 02, 2010
I know they say to only wash your hair every other day but I have never been able to do that. I shampoo/condition my hair every day as I cannot stand the feeling of my hair being dirty or greasy-looking or whatever. I am 28 and have pretty long hair and my hair has always been really healthy so I have never tried to force myself to not wash it everyday. Does it really damage your hair? ...

Pink HairAug 03, 2010
Can anyone recommend a product that will cover gray/white roots without turning my hair a pink color?  Some years ago I was using over the counter color and was actually approached by people, telling me my hair was "purple."  I told my stylist and she said the over  the counter products have a violet base, and when applied to brown hair it gives a pretty highlight.  If you apply it to hair that has lost its color it soaks up the violet color and that's what you see.  ...

Wen Hair Care?Apr 15, 2012
Battling insomnia last night, I watched an infomercial for this product and the thought behind it makes sense to keep one's hair at its healthiest (especially if platinum blond, like I currently am). I Am About To Frost My Hair. Any Tips?Nov 09, 2010
I actually have Loreal in a box but also went out a year ago and bought the individual products.  I finally have the nerve to do it as my hair is dull mouse brown and long - and now looking lifeless and bland.  I am 50 and want to enjoy long hair for a bit longer before I chop it off for convenience sake.   Should I make small streaks or bold. Wash it out fast or go for the sun streaked look.   I just wonder if you could tell me how to not screw it up.   Thank you. ...

No More Brittle Hair Or Dry Skin.Sep 20, 2010
If any of you have problems with brittle hair and dry skin, try a shower filter.  The water in your shower is filled with chemicals, minerals, and the same or more amount of chlorine as swimming pool water.  I just purchased an Aquasana shower filter.  In less than 1 week, I have noticed a tremendous difference in the softness of my hair and skin.  It is like showering in pure spring water.  There is no way I would ever go back to using plain shower water again!  ...

Save Your Hair For PB Oil CleanupJul 05, 2010
In the latest issue of one of my dog journals, there's an article about a place in CA, Matter of Trust, that's collecting dog and human hair to use for helping clean up some of the oil.  Makes sense, since hair absorbs oil (which is why we shampoo).  They stuff iit in nylon stockings and tie the stockings together.  Hair salons and pet groomers would be a great source for this.  For more information and mailing instructions, their website is <matt ...

Okay, I have wavy/curly hair.  Basically just wavy, but if it's cut short, it's curly. I have an interesting observation. Anyone Ever Tried That Hair Removal System No No?Jul 29, 2013
