Pink hair

Can anyone recommend a product that will cover gray/white roots without turning my hair a pink color? Some years ago I was using over the counter color and was actually approached by people, telling me my hair was "purple." I told my stylist and she said the over the counter products have a violet base, and when applied to brown hair it gives a pretty highlight. If you apply it to hair that has lost its color it soaks up the violet color and that's what you see. I'm trying to save money by touching up the roots myself instead of paying every 4 weeks to go to the salon. Whatever she uses at the salon makes my hair a very pretty brown and covers completely. I would appreciate any help. I have heard L'Oreal professional line is good. Can you tell me where to get this? I am wondering if you have to go to the supply store where the stylists buy their hair products. Thanks again!

Suggestion - for color
[ In Reply To ..]There are different types of hair color. They don't necessarily mix and match due to the underlying chemical formulas and what they deposit on the hair.
To avoid disaster, you will probably need to use the exact same product your hairdresser uses. If you are able to do the touchups yourself using the color, then you might as well do the whole color service yourself. If she is using a product restricted to licensed hair professionals, you won't be able to purchase it.
One solution would be to switch to a lighter color, like blonde. The roots won't show as much.
Another would be to use a temporary touch-up color. They come in stick form and brush-on, like mascara. You only need to do the bits that will show, like right in front.
These are available at Sally stores. Not expensive at all. The sales staff there will help you.

[ In Reply To ..]I wish I could just let my hair grown out and go white, but no easy way to do that. I currently try to get by on the color stick which you mentioned. I buy that at Sally's. It doesn't match that well (not much to choose from). It makes it feel oily since it's like a crayon. I heard L'Oreal professional color really covers without the pink, but since no one else responded to my post there is no proof of that either. I might try it. I'll talk to my stylist and see what help she can give about the product. If I purchase it maybe she will cut me a break on the price of coloring my hair. I wish now I had never colored it in the first place.

[ In Reply To ..]You might want to quit going to the salon for color and just do it yourself. It's a heck of a lot cheaper and really isn't that much trouble (I do it). You can either buy the color at Sally's or the grocery or drug store. (I have even mixed boxed colors together to make a different shade and then used the other half the next time ... as long as you only open one developer at a time.)
I have been hoping to find a thick-type color that I can put my own low lights in (without having to use cap or foil) which would be nice for the way the color seems to lighten as the weeks go on and also deal with the roots enough to go longer periods without re-coloring. No luck yet. As it is now I can get away with only coloring about every 8 weeks, so still not bad.
Your hairstyle can make a difference too. Layered hair can go longer, as it will fluff up and hide the roots. : )

[ In Reply To ..]If you have a Sally's beauty supply store you could get the L'Oreal professional line there. I just used the L'Oreal prof line on my hair. It turned out nice. I had plantinum bleached hair and tried the medium mahogany brown and it turned it a pretty mahogany brown.
