I am about to frost my hair. Any tips?

Posted: Nov 9, 2010

I actually have Loreal in a box but also went out a year ago and bought the individual products.  I finally have the nerve to do it as my hair is dull mouse brown and long - and now looking lifeless and bland.  I am 50 and want to enjoy long hair for a bit longer before I chop it off for convenience sake.

Should I make small streaks or bold. Wash it out fast or go for the sun streaked look.

I just wonder if you could tell me how to not screw it up.

Thank you.

Hi-I vote for small streaks. I am 53 and when I went for the bold streaks I just looked like a zebra. I hated it, but am much happier with the smaller streaks.

Since this is your first time, I would go with - the smaller streaks SM

framing your face. Good luck. :)

I've got long light brown hair, and have - been streaking it for years. -sm

Your results may vary, but here are some of my experiences:

1 - Don't buy an ancient box of lightener that's been sitting on the shelf at the local discount store for decades. I did, and the powder that you mix in had turned to stone. I had to try to crush it first, and the mixture was gritty.

2 - If it's your first time highlighting, by all means read and follow the instructions carefully. I don't do the strand test every time, but it's a good idea to do it the first time.

3 - One of my best, most natural-looking results was when the brand of highlighter I bought had that little tie-on cap in it, the one with a jillion holes in it, and a little hook that looks like mini crochet needle. It was slow, awkward, and kind of a pain, but the results looked great because it forces you to take tiny clumps of hair.

4 - My second-favorite is the kind that comes with that little brightly-colored, kind of chunky applicator with the 3 or 4 prongs at the end, where you fill in-between the prongs with lightener. The secret with that applicator is to move it slowly, and be sure it's laying down colorant right at the beginning of the stroke, near the roots, rather than halfway down the strand, which could lead to #5 below:

5 - Like the instructions say, DON'T go back over a strand you highlighted a second time. It'll come out wide and obviously artificial. Unless that's the look you're going for, which of course some people do.

6 - Time it carefully with a kitchen timer.

7 - I wear a pony tail a lot, so the most common way I highlight for touch-ups is to put my hair in a ponytail, and then streak random parts from the roots out to the rubber band. I don't need to go beyond that when I already have other, older streaks. Also do a couple underneath, from the nape of the neck out, if you want a couple other streaks under your ponytail.

8 - If my hair is down (parted in the middle), I get a pretty good result highlighting more towards my face, less in the back. I have bangs, and they grow out fast, so I always put in a few root-to tip streaks in those, as well.

9 - Sometimes you can "fix" a too-bold highlight, but not always. I have a bottle of brown hair color, and have sometimes been able to go back another day and put in some darker streaks in the mistake area, so that it won't look quite so noticeable.

10 - When all else fails, if you've got a chunk where you got it too blonde, or too wide, and you're pressed for time, you can always sort of cover it up by folding back normal-colored hair over it with a barrette.

I like highlighting for making grays less noticeable. Eventually I suppose one day I'll be gray enough that it'll be time to just color all my hair, and would want to go lighter than my natural shade, anyway. So highlighting is a way to ease into that, as well.

Anyway, GO FOR IT! Experiment! Have fun!

My nightmare story - sm

Born a blonde. White-haired blonde as a child. Light golden blonde as a teen and young woman. Now, dark ash blonde.

Tried to save money and do it myself at home. TURNED ORANGE. BOZO THE CLOWN ORANGE.

Fortunately, found a Master Colorist and he saved me. I only go to him, period. I get more compliments on my "natural blonde" hair now than I did when I was naturally blonde younger. I make his costs part of my budget and just woman-up and pay it.

Best money I spend on myself.

Question About Hair. I Am Older And Have Rather Fine Hair But I Do Jan 24, 2017
get it foiled with some color in it.  I have been thinking about a curly perm but I am not sure what kind to get and I would have my hairdresser do it.  I dont want a fuzz ball so I am wondering if anyone here has tried this on colored hair just streaked color.  I want a good perm that would last for a while and have curl to it but not tight.  My hairdresser does not carrying prems anymore and the company they deal with does not sell them either.  They are expensive ...

VR TipsMar 13, 2013
Does anybody have any ideas on how to improve my speed with VR?  It's supposed to be so terrible to take your hands off the keys, but we have to do that constantly to hit the arrow key, the control key, the delete key, etc.-- then when we need to make a correction, we have to put them back on, and I always put them back on in the wrong place.  It seems as if we need two extra hands.  Any ideas would be appreciated.  Thanks. ...

I Need Organizing TipsFeb 25, 2011
Has anybody out there gone from an office where paperwork is everywhere to a serene, organized work environment?  What changes did you make to bring this about?   I share a home office with my husband.  He lets paperwork pile up (medical stuff, school paperwork, as well as work-related - even junk mail sometimes, if he thinks there might be anything interesting in it) and things really get out of hand quickly in our office. I want to walk in and see everything put away with clear ...

Wrinkle TipsJan 17, 2015
Help, please!!  I am turning 40 this year and I have started getting the lines under my eyes and I hate them.  Does anyone know of any creams that I can buy that legitimately do help with face wrinkles.  I'm an MT, on an MT budget, so I'm talking Wal-Mart or pharmacy creams, not anything super expensive.  And, one more question.  Also facial makeup.  Anyone know a good base foundation that covers wrinkles really well?  Again, I'm talking Wal-Mar ...

More Money-Saving TipsOct 15, 2013
I had wanted to respond to money-saving ideas but didn't get to it until the post was way, way down the screen! I go to the Goodwill or Salvation Army. These days, they're like regular shops. Everything is clean, not ripped or stained or anything. The ones by us have the racks color-coded---if you want a pink shirt, you go to the shirts and from there, the pink shirts are all in a row. If you need green pants, you go to where the pants are, and the green pants are all in a row. T ...

Tips On Making A Shadow BoxDec 10, 2015

Any Tips On Finding Decent Doctor?Jul 08, 2010
Went to a new doc after many years of not going.  As I was speaking of a series of upsetting deaths and started to cry a tiny bit, he just kept clicking away on his lap top (and maybe nodded a couple times).  Aside from that, my TSH was in the normal range (but near one end) and no free T3 or T4 were done, but I have had numerous thyroid symptoms for 12 years or so (didn't realize they correlated for several years and never had it assessed).  He said my TSH was VERY normal so ...

Any Tips On Using Cold Water To Defrost A 17-pound Turkey?Nov 17, 2011
I usually buy fresh birds, but opted for the more budget-friendly 39-cents-per-pound rock-solid frozen version this time  This turkey will be cooked before Sunday (hving an erly get-together), so I don't quite have enough time to defrost it in the fridge.  The instructions suggest submersion in "cool" water in the sink for 30 minutes per pound, with frequent water changes.  It has air-tight vacuum sealed packaging.  I'm thinking that changing the wat ...

Is There Any Help For My HairMay 01, 2011
I understand as we grow older our bodies change, skin gets saggy, wrinkled, loses elasticity, etc and our hair changes.  What I'm wondering is this.  Is there a product, vitamin, or whatever that can make your hair look younger and healthier.  Growing up I had beautiful hair, soft natural curls that the hairdressers said people would die to have curls that are natural like that.  Now at 51 years old my hair is coarse, and frizzy.  I can find some curls here and ther ...

Dog HairJun 14, 2011
For those of you with dogs that shed (like my Golden), can you share you grooming schedule and favorite brush? I've used to use a rake but found a tool that's cheaper than a Furminator (sp?) and doesn't rip the skin. It's made by Oster and called a Shedzilla. I've been brushing him every couple of days but this time of year, I'm wondering if I should do it more often? I like to do it outside to keep the fur out of the house as much as possible. ...

Hair Falling OutFeb 04, 2012
I am devastated right now.  I had long, thick beautiful hair and over the past couple of months I have noticed a big change in it.  Now it is falling out!  Long strands just letting loose.  At this rate, I will be bald in a couple of weeks and that is not an exaggeration.  It doesn't even look or feel like hair.  It is shriveling up and is very light and falling out!  How and why can this happen and will it stop?  Has this happened to anyone? ...

Help - Need Hair Color FixFeb 01, 2010
A few days ago I colored my hair black.  The box said (and looked like it would be a soft black), and it turned out way blacker than I imagined (if that's possible).  I usually go brown, but the reason I went black was to try to get back to as close as my natural color while the gray is coming in.  I really didn't want to color my hair, however, between the brown I last colored it, the gray coming in, and the "soft" black that was mixed in with the gray I had too many co ...

I Have A Hair Question Too, For Those Of You With - SmMay 01, 2011
alopecia areata, have you tried any home remeadies that have worked?  I have gone to the dermatoloigst, have received 3 sets of cortisone shots to the scalp so far, no luck, just a few fine hairs coming in.  It should have all grown back at this point from the injections.  So now we are waiting a year to see if anything changes (been about 2 years already so looks pretty permanent right now).  Doc gave me samples of Protopic but basically said she did not expect it to work bu ...

Do You Wash Your Hair Every Day?Jul 02, 2010
I know they say to only wash your hair every other day but I have never been able to do that. I shampoo/condition my hair every day as I cannot stand the feeling of my hair being dirty or greasy-looking or whatever. Pink HairAug 03, 2010
Can anyone recommend a product that will cover gray/white roots without turning my hair a pink color?  Some years ago I was using over the counter color and was actually approached by people, telling me my hair was "purple."  I told my stylist and she said the over  the counter products have a violet base, and when applied to brown hair it gives a pretty highlight.  If you apply it to hair that has lost its color it soaks up the violet color and that's what you see.  ...

Wen Hair Care?Apr 15, 2012
Battling insomnia last night, I watched an infomercial for this product and the thought behind it makes sense to keep one's hair at its healthiest (especially if platinum blond, like I currently am). Hair Dye What To Buy Tired Of ColorsilkDec 03, 2009
I have long hair that usually takes about 3 boxes of dye.  I usually only do it about 2-3 times a year and do the all over color each time because my color tends to fade.  I think hair dye might be one of those things that you get what you pay for.  I usually buy the Colorsilk ($2-$3 at Walmart) because it is cheaper and I am usually broke.  This year I think I will splurge a little and buy a more expensive brand.  In the past I have tried the Herbal ess. and Natrual Ins ...

No More Brittle Hair Or Dry Skin.Sep 20, 2010
If any of you have problems with brittle hair and dry skin, try a shower filter.  The water in your shower is filled with chemicals, minerals, and the same or more amount of chlorine as swimming pool water.  I just purchased an Aquasana shower filter.  In less than 1 week, I have noticed a tremendous difference in the softness of my hair and skin.  It is like showering in pure spring water.  There is no way I would ever go back to using plain shower water again!  ...

Save Your Hair For PB Oil CleanupJul 05, 2010
In the latest issue of one of my dog journals, there's an article about a place in CA, Matter of Trust, that's collecting dog and human hair to use for helping clean up some of the oil.  Makes sense, since hair absorbs oil (which is why we shampoo).  They stuff iit in nylon stockings and tie the stockings together.  Hair salons and pet groomers would be a great source for this.  For more information and mailing instructions, their website is <matt ...
