Save your hair for PB oil cleanup

Posted: Jul 5, 2010

In the latest issue of one of my dog journals, there's an article about a place in CA, Matter of Trust, that's collecting dog and human hair to use for helping clean up some of the oil.  Makes sense, since hair absorbs oil (which is why we shampoo).  They stuff iit in nylon stockings and tie the stockings together.  Hair salons and pet groomers would be a great source for this.

For more information and mailing instructions, their website is <matteroftrust.org>.

Aveeda salons always save hair for this?

You can STOP saving hair. - PLEASE

Saving hair might make you feel that you are doing something for the environment, but it's useless.

The federal agencies in charge of cleanup have asked that you stop saving hair.

"Hair booms" were found to be nearly useless at soaking up oil. Any usefulness they had was counteracted by the fact that they become incredibly heavy just when WET and THEY SINK, causing worse environmental problems.

In other words, they are too difficult to retrieve AND they don't work as well as commercial oil-absorbent products.

Cut hair from salons is also covered in hair products, and the stockings are covered in detergent residue, which dissolve into the water, harming even more wildlife.

Yes, emails tout the wonders of all this hair, and, yes, Aveda salons save hair, but everyone doing a misguided thing doesn't make it any better.

Is saving hair going to harm anything? Well, maybe not, but if it keeps YOU from doing something that is truly useful, then maybe it's not so good.

The thing is that if you think getting your hair cut is doing a good deed, then you are only doing a good deed for hair salons. You're not doing anything for the environment or the animals.

Why not focus your attention on something that is truly useful? Do something that is definitely good . . . here's a suggestion.

How about donating a bottle of Dawn Original dishwashing liquid to a seabird rescue organization?

That is the only detergent they can use on seabirds. It's been in use for years.

If you do not live near one, you can donate to one online. The Suncoast Seabird Foundation in Indian Rocks, Florida, is collecting donations for this purpose. They are a responsible organization with a year-round mission to provide veterinary care for coastal birds, and they do a good job of it. They travel to areas of need in the case of oil spills.

Visit their website to see their list of needed items. If you feel a need to send actual items, then send scrub brushes, paper towels, and toothbrushes (get them from the dollar stores).

Sticking a couple dollars in an envelope and mailing it to them would be better than all your haircuts for a lifetime.

hair "absorbs" oil only to a minimal degree - wiglets and toupets?

[ In Reply To ..]
the majority stays put around the hair shaft, THEREFORE hair gets greasy and has to be shampooed out.

Crazy idea to think that this could clean up the oil in the Gulf of Mexico!

It seems this company rather tries to collect human and dog hair to fabricate wiglets and toupets...! Hahaha!

Haha! What a weird idea - see mess

It would be better to throw

peeled and sliced eggplants

into the oil spill!

They absobs a LOT of oil, especially if it is HOT, like now the oil in the Gulf f Mexico!

Navy Seals Able To Save 22 Women And ChildrenMay 05, 2011
Each day I grow more impressed with what the SEALs were able to do:  According to Jim Miklaszewski on msnbc.com: The U.S. officials describing the operation said the SEALs carefully gathered up 22 women and children to ensure they were not harmed. Some of the women were put in “flexi-cuffs” the plastic straps used to bind someone’s hands at the wrists, and left them for Pakistani security forces to discover. So in the midst of this tense (to say the least) situation, the ...

Is There Any Help For My HairMay 01, 2011

Help - Need Hair Color FixFeb 01, 2010
A few days ago I colored my hair black.  The box said (and looked like it would be a soft black), and it turned out way blacker than I imagined (if that's possible).  I usually go brown, but the reason I went black was to try to get back to as close as my natural color while the gray is coming in.  I really didn't want to color my hair, however, between the brown I last colored it, the gray coming in, and the "soft" black that was mixed in with the gray I had too many co ...
